Denison Newcomer Club

We started the Denison Newcomer Club two years ago to create a safe space for students who are new to Newmarket, Canada and to the school community. This club has become a second family for many students, past and present, who often face barriers while navigating the transition into life at a new school.

The club provides several supports to Newmarket youth and their families. Over the last two years, we have provided mental health supports, job opportunities, literacy and homework support, social connections and more.

Last year, we connected newcomer families with local organizations and other families in our school through our Newcomer Family Engagement Night which was open to the entire Newmarket community. Our ESL students, in partnership with some of our Student Council students, planned and facilitated this event which was a huge success! This evening was a celebration of food, culture and diversity. It also brought our local community together. In addition, it provided opportunities for Newmarket youth to find their voice, hone their leadership skills and share their talents.

This club has always been open to anyone and everyone in the school community. It continues to grow as more and more students find security in the positive space we have created together. Some of the youth we support through this club are often overlooked and underserved members of our community. Our mission has always been to eliminate barriers, support mental health and well-being, and to celebrate diversity. Individuals part of this club include newcomer youth, 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, Alternative Education youth and more.

With this grant money, we are hoping to eliminate any financial barriers that may be associated with this group of students to ensure equitable access to education, food and extracurriculars. In doing so, we hope to create a more cohesive school community where Newmarket youth don’t face obstacles to inclusion.
