Barrios Unidos Youth Photo-Telling Cohort

This project is part of my work at Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos. Our youth cohort, made up of students from a local continuation school, will be leading this 'photo-telling' project in our community. Together they will spend six weeks conducting photo journalism around our county, capturing images that represent their points of interest and developing the narrative around the issues they chose to highlight. In our county we see the impacts from housing inequity, environmental destruction, the lack of community responsive policy for our immigrant community, and so much more, all of which deeply impact students in the county. With this project students will be able to hone in on their unique perspectives as youth and create a policy action item to present to local representatives. They will also lead a community event that will benefit the community and showcase their findings. Our last cohort designed t-shirts to fundraise for local undocumented families in need of support. The project is hosted and run by me and Barrios Unidos, but the students have full freedom in how they chose to build out their project and what they want their impact to be. Photo journalism and photography are incredible mediums to reach audiences through and I am excited to host a space for youth to explore their insights and povs. The project will also serve as a form of college and career readiness. Though our focus will be the photo-telling, we will also delve into teachings and topics based on the pedagogy we use here at BU, which is based in Indigenous practice and philosophy. We instill an attitude of respect, humility, love and care through our conversations and exercises with youth groups. We also teach on topics regarding physical health and wellness, mental health and social/community help. Many times students are unable to find the support they need with families or in traditional school settings, so it is important we are here to support them in whatever way we can.
