    <title>Toronto – Bony Knees Zine</title>
<content type="html">Bony Knees is a Toronto-based music zine focused on sharing news, reviews, and interviews of punk, indie, and emo bands — especially if they're Canadian!

Together with my partner Liam, we have been running Bony Knees since February of 2025. During that time, we have gained over 200 followers on Instagram, published over 50 articles, and interviewed over 20 bands, including the Juno-award-winning, all-female punk band, NOBRO.

Something that we also feel makes us unique is that we're interested in talking to and interviewing anybody who is a part of the music ecosystem, since it takes more than just bands to create a thriving music scene! For example, we have an ongoing series called STILL LIFE where we interview concert photographers about their work and unique perspective on shows as a workplace for them.

We started out as a web-only project, but in August we self-published our very first print edition of Bony Knees! We have been selling copies ourselves online and at local shows, as well as by stocking them at local shops such as Secret Planet and The Beguiling.

Our dream to grow Bony Knees into a platform for our community. Right now, the two of us write almost all of the content, but we would like to put most of the money towards building an attractive contributor program that appropriately compensates people who want to write or photograph for us, as well as helping with ongoing costs, such as web-hosting and printing.</content>

    <title>Liverpool (Inativo) – Christmas Joy with Friends</title>
<content type="html">We want to take 60 disabled children/siblings &amp; families to The Hayloft for a fully inclusive Christmas Experience. This is a 50 minute experience which includes a gift &amp; train ride. Fun with the elves in their enchanting workshop, making magical reindeer food, a visit to the magical grotto to enjoy a story from Santa &amp; receive their gift, then a train ride back.
We did this experience last year &amp; it has to be one of the best. They allow us the whole place, nothing is too much trouble &amp; they take their time taking photos &amp; interacting with the children. It is a perfect set up for our disabled children many who are autistic &amp; cant cope in crowded places. Feedback from last year was amazing. Families were so impressed with the standard of care received by the staff. The added bonus of it just being Friends families made the whole experience so magical. We want to create that experience again.
We cover families with SEND children from 0-25 who live in Liverpool City Region &amp; the surrounding areas. We have over 1000 families registered with us &amp; have a wide range of disabilities from autism, downs syndrome to complex genetic conditions.
We currently have very limited funds &amp; this grant would really put smiles on children's faces this Christmas.</content>

    <title>Ottawa – Capital History Kiosks: Pop-up Histories</title>
<content type="html">September’s Awesome Ottawa award goes to David Dean to support a hockey-themed Capital History Kiosk.

“They’re easy to spot when you’re walking along any of Ottawa’s busy streets,” says David. “Not the drab traffic control boxes themselves, but the colourful history lessons that have been applied to them to remind you of what Ottawa used to look like 10, 50, or 100 years ago, and to tell the story of a significant event that took place near each box.”

“Capital History Kiosks,” David continues, “consists of over 60 installations across the city telling stories of neighbourhood histories through a dynamic image wrapped around a traffic control box with a QR code taking visitors to the website [capitalhistory.ca] (https://www.capitalhistory.ca), where they can read, listen, and see more. Many of the images on the kiosks are archival, while others were commissioned from local artists. Audio files on the website were scripted and performed by actors or extracted from oral history interviews.”

David is a retired Carleton University history professor who is passionate about Ottawa's history. Under his leadership, the stories associated with the Capital History project were identified, researched, and written by over two hundred Carleton graduate and undergraduate students over five years, working with community partners and individuals. “The project,” says David, “demonstrates my strong belief that bringing research, teaching, and community activism together enriches all of our lives.”

“I will use the money from Awesome Ottawa to repair the installation on Elgin Street about the early Ottawa Senators, which has been damaged by glue posting,” he says. “I want to take the opportunity to also go beyond the Senators and tell the story of women's hockey in Ottawa, celebrating our wonderful new Ottawa Charge team that has so captivated all of us these past two seasons.”</content>

<title>Washington, DC – Black QTs Camp: Anacostia River Stewardship Paddle</title>
<content type="html">Black QTs Camp will host a kayak based cleanup on the Anacostia River for our collective members in partnership with The Anacostia Riverkeepers and AKWA Tribe to promote environmental stewardship and community care.

This project will bring 20 members of the Black QTs Camp collective together for a guided kayak cleanup along the Anacostia River. In collaboration with Anacostia Riverkeepers, participants will paddle the river while collecting litter and debris, learning about the local watershed, and building relationships with one another and the Land. This experience will include a kayaking skill share led by Jack from AKWA Tribe, a safety training, supplies and gear, and space for reflection on our role as caretakers of our shared environment.

This project is awesome because it merges environmental stewardship with joy and belonging for Black queer and trans community members who are often excluded from outdoor recreation and conservation spaces. It creates a rare opportunity for participants to feel safe, celebrated, and connected while actively caring for the Earth.

The Anacostia River is a vital natural resource for Washington, D.C., yet it has long faced pollution and often neglect. This project will directly improve the river’s health by removing waste from its waters while cultivating new environmental stewards from communities who are deeply underrepresented in local sustainability efforts. By engaging Black queer and trans residents as active caretakers of the Anacostia, we are building a more inclusive, equitable, and environmentally resilient city for everyone.

<title>Gloucester, MA – Those Who Served: Korean &amp; Vietnam War Veterans</title>
<content type="html">Ten years ago, I, with tremendous community support, produced an exhibition of Cape Ann's Greatest Generation - Veterans of WWII. Now, with the 50th anniversary of the end of our involvement in Vietnam, it is time to honor the service of those who answered their nation's call for the wars in Korea and Vietnam.

Unlike the men and women who returned from Europe and the Pacific, these veterans returned to an altogether different reception: indifference and, in some cases, outright hostility. It's time to remember that every veteran who serves their nation, our nation, especially those who served during times of conflict, deserves respect and honor. This is my attempt to help tell and preserve their stories.

My goal is to fund the creation of an exhibition to be held at Gloucester's City Hall by Veterans' Day 2025.

    <title>Rhode Island – Join The Collective</title>
<content type="html">This September, we're supporting the Rhode Island Freedom Collective who plan to offer honoraria to 5–7 formerly incarcerated Rhode Islanders for sharing their lived experience as speakers and ambassadors. These individuals will represent the RIFC community on public panels, at legislative hearings, and during RI Freedom Collective community events, helping to shift narratives about incarceration and reentry.
Their work is building a sustainable pipeline of leaders who can speak truth to power, engage the public, and influence policymakers. It is a small but significant step in advancing their mission: ensuring that formerly incarcerated people are at the center of organizing efforts for justice and equity in Rhode Island.

    <title>Utrecht – De Graffitituin</title>

Wie is onze doelgroep?
•	Mensen met een psychische kwetsbaarheid
•	Mensen die kampen met eenzaamheid, verlies of stress
•	Jongeren of volwassenen zonder daginvulling

</content>

<title>Chicago, IL – Art in Motion Pop-Up: Douglass Library Edition</title>
<content type="html">On November 15th and 22nd, The Children’s Gallery Chicago (TCGC) will bring joy, creativity, and community connection to North Lawndale through two free public art pop-ups at the Douglass Branch Library. These open-air art studios invite children and families to explore painting, color-mixing, and now, for the first time, clay sculpting!

After seeing the transformative power of art in our summer events, where kids made new friends, discovered confidence, and created masterpieces from emotion and instinct, we are expanding our materials to include self-hardening clay and sculpting tools. This new addition will help us reach youth who express themselves best through touch, movement, and hands-on creation.

The project includes everything needed to make sculpting safe, exciting, and accessible. We will provide clay, sculpting tools, table coverings, instruction cards, and guided lessons for children of all ages. After sculpting, youth will be invited to display their work inside the library for the community to admire.

These pop-ups are free to attend and open to the public. We are working with local schools, daycares, and neighborhood partners to spread the word.

While we do host pop-ups throughout the city, this grant would fund a specific new offering: two sculpture tables for November's pop-up at Douglass Branch Library, with all supplies of this addition attributed to the Awesome Foundation. With your support, we can bring a new kind of joy to the community shaped by little hands and big imaginations.</content>

    <title>Kingston – Pregnancy Loss Support Packages</title>
<content type="html">Our project began when we recognized that 1 in 4 women experience a miscarriage (pregnancy loss before 20 weeks), yet there is little support in place to help these women process their loss and heal. We set out to create support packages that healthcare providers could hand out for free to any patients who have experienced a miscarriage. We drew on ideas from surrounding cities, and spoke with women who’ve personally experienced a miscarriage, to put together a list of items to be included. Some items are based on occupational therapy foundations, addressing the mental health impact that a miscarriage can have on individuals. Our package includes educational information that has been reviewed by a doctor, a list of additional resources (i.e., warm line, support group), mental health tools (mindfulness strategies, a journal, and colouring materials), and a bracelet to remember their baby and the resilience they showed throughout their healing journey. We have partnered with Willow Family Wellness Occupational Therapy Services and are using some of their resources, such as space to hold the supplies and volunteers to make the packages; however, we need financial support to acquire the materials to build the packages. Currently, the number of miscarriages within the Kingston community is unknown, as these health records are not reported. Therefore, we are currently unsure how many packages would need to be distributed each month. This grant is an optimal amount for this initiative – many other grants are too large given the inconclusive number of support packages that would be needed within the Kingston community. This grant would fund this pilot project and will help us to determine the effectiveness of this project and how many packages are utilized, guiding our future steps.</content>

    <title>Ipswich, MA – Ipswich Street Stewards</title>
<content type="html">Ipswich Street Stewards - A project to continue to care for and beautify our community. Volunteers would sign up to be a steward of a particular street. In doing so, they would be choosing to be responsible for picking up trash on the side of the road. Volunteers would be provided with a bucket, gloves, and trash grabber as equipment. Ongoing community engagement with removal of trash and small plastics would help to improve the environment, protect our waterways, reduce animal fallout, beautify our community, and provide a more broad sense of community and civility. Street stewards can also provide input about maintenance of streets. Future evolution and growth may include recommendations for light landscaping with removal of invasives, planting pollinator friendly and attractive florals, as well as things like art installations and public events. Rotating street block parties with road closures for pedestrians during the summer months might be a way to encourage engagement with the local community in different areas or a town wide street steward block party event where there are multiple (easily bypassed streets) are closed and people can attend locally.

<title>Cleveland, OH – Thrive From The Grown Up Solar shed </title>
<content type="html">Last year, a major power outage in Cleveland left some of our neighbors without electricity for nearly a week. Families in our community—especially those with health conditions—faced serious challenges, including food spoilage, lack of access to medication, and no way to communicate. That experience sparked an urgent question in our group: What do we need to be more prepared? Every member agreed—we needed a long-term, community-powered solution.

Thrive from the Ground Up, a program of Speak Into the Light, is more than just a solar project—it’s a year-round sustainability and self-reliance initiative. We focus on small-space gardening, clean energy, food security, and community preparedness. As part of this work, we are building a Solar Resilience Shed to support families in our neighborhood during emergencies and outages. The shed will feature rooftop solar panels, battery storage, and mobile power dollies that provide off-grid electricity for critical needs like refrigerating medications and charging phones, tablets, and emergency devices.

This project is being built by committed community members and homeowners in the Hough neighborhood (top half of Linwood), who meet monthly to grow, learn, and support one another. We've already funded and installed the shed, inverters, and wiring. With your support, we’ll complete the system by adding solar panels and additional batteries, ensuring that our neighbors are never left without power when they need it most. </content>

<title>Cleveland, OH – Supplies for Free and Affordable Art Classes</title>
<content type="html">I've been teaching free and pay-what-you-can art classes for a little over two years now. The first round of classroom supplies I purchased was provided through a grant from the Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center. After leading dozens of classes, it is time to re-up on supplies and provide necessary upgrades now that I have experience and know which tools and materials work best.

I believe art should be accessible to all willing learners, no matter their background, age, race, income, etc. I have taught folks as young as 8 years and 75 or better! I work with libraries, museums, community hubs, and non-profits with similar missions of providing access to arts programs.

My focus is primarily printmaking, specifically linocut block printing, though I have also offered classes in political cartoons, collage, screenprint, and risograph. Linocut block printing is affordable, accessible to a wide range of artistic experiences, and forgiving as a medium. My learners often share that while they don't always imagine themselves as artists, or maybe have struggled in the past with other mediums, they find much fulfillment and satisfaction in block printing.

Securing grants to pay for supplies allows me to offer the classes for free or at a reduced cost. When I organize the classes myself (without financial support from an institution to cover my labor costs), I keep the cost at a suggested amount of $33 per student, and do not turn students away for lack of funds. Some students can pay more to cover those who pay less, or cannot pay at all. I've been able to teach over a dozen low-income learners this way. </content>

She consulted Warners Bay Rotary could support a basic breakfast initiative for the students. The Breakfast Club commenced in Term Two with 18 participants and has since grown substantially, now serving an average of 100 students, with a peak attendance of 125 on a single day. The program offers a simple breakfast consisting of fresh fruit, cereals, toast, and beverages such as fruit juice and Up &amp; Go. In addition to meeting nutritional needs, the Breakfast Club fosters opportunities for social interaction among students, teachers, and volunteers, helping to break down barriers and reduce the stigma associated with not being able to have a morning meal.

    <title>Cleveland, OH – Free Front-Yard Trees for Residents</title>
<content type="html">We are applying for funding to continue our main program, which is planting trees for free in residents’ front yards in Cleveland Heights and University Heights. Each season we have historically planted over 100 front-yard trees, on average.

Planting front-yard trees for free for residents who might not otherwise have the financial means or initiative to do so is simple but still brings myriad benefits to the community while also progressing urban forestry goals. Not only will the new trees help sequester carbon, improve air quality, increase biodiversity, and increase natural habitats to support urban wildlife, but it will also provide an essential social benefit to the community.

When a resident requests a tree, someone from our team meets with them to determine the best tree species and placement, taking the resident’s preferences into account. In spring and fall, trees are planted, caged and staked, and residents receive a handout detailing how to care for their young tree.

Our method, planting front-yard trees for free for residents who might not otherwise have the financial means or initiative to do so, is simple but nonetheless provides meaningful impact. We are working to rebuild the tree canopy and improve the environment.

Not only will these young front-yard trees enhance and beautify the street, making it more attractive to prospective families, but the entire community will also benefit from the associated environmental, health, social, and economic benefits of having more trees. People are happier and healthier when they live among trees.

With trees, stress levels decrease, along with stress-related diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, anxiety, and depression. When trees are lost, so are their benefits, which are essential to the well-being of a community.</content>

    <title>Portland, OR – Animating Albina: Stories of North/Northeast Portl</title>
<content type="html">My project aligns with the Portland Chapter’s mission to make Portland Awesomer by bringing the history and cultural richness of North/Northeast Portland to life through animation. The focus will be the Albina District, highlighting its historical significance, community stories, and artistic legacy. By combining animation with interactive storytelling workshops and collaborative sessions, the project invites residents, local artists, and youth to actively participate, share their memories, and contribute to the narrative. This approach fosters connection, dialogue, and cultural preservation, while creating work that is visually compelling and deeply rooted in Portland’s community.

The project also has a lasting impact beyond the immediate event: the resulting animation will serve as a cultural resource, accessible to schools, local organizations, and the broader public. By engaging multiple disciplines—visual art, performance, storytelling—it brings together diverse voices and encourages ongoing collaboration. Through this project, I aim to strengthen Portland’s creative ecosystem, celebrate local heritage, and provide an inclusive space for learning, reflection, and artistic exploration, making the city a richer, more connected, and vibrant place for all.</content>

<content type="html">The FOOD Club is a healing-centered, fashion-based identity program launching its pilot year at Pittsburgh Barack Obama Academy during the 2025–2026 school year. This innovative club is designed to support students in grades 6–12 as they explore self-expression, creativity, and confidence through the world of fashion.

Weekly sessions will focus on everything from mood boards and color theory to thrift flips, creative writing, affirmations, and styling challenges. The curriculum is beginner-friendly and requires no prior fashion experience—just curiosity and imagination.

What sets the FOOD Club apart is its focus on emotional wellness and identity development through fashion. The program ends with a showcase called "I Am the Blueprint," where students will present their personal fashion journeys to peers, families, and the community.

The FOOD Club is about more than style—it’s about substance, self-love, and showing up as your true self.

After careful reflection and countless conversations with community members, it has become evident that our youth are in urgent need of positive outlets, guidance, educational, and employment opportunities.
Many of our young people face daily challenges due to poverty, limited access to resources, and the absence of positive role models. **ATWILL** seeks to directly address these issues by providing a safe, nurturing environment where youth can grow, learn, and become engaged, empowered members of our community.
A key component of ATWILL will be a **Young Entrepreneurs Program**, designed to inspire and support youth who aspire to start and grow their businesses. This program will not only teach entrepreneurial skills but also provide real employment opportunities, pairing young entrepreneurs with older teens who can assist them in executing their small business plans. This collaboration will create a cycle of empowerment, where youth learn from each other, build leadership skills, and develop a sense of ownership over their futures.

    <title>Cass Clay – Classroom Reach</title>
<content type="html">I teach an incredible group of 5th and 6th grade students in a REACH classroom—REACH stands for Relationship, Education, Accountability, Character, and Hard Work. My students have high academic and social-emotional needs, and we work every day to build not just knowledge, but confidence, resilience, and strong relationships.

One of the biggest challenges we face is making sure students have what they need to learn and thrive—and that includes both supplies and snacks. When students are hungry or worried about not having basic materials, it’s hard for them to focus or manage emotions. A simple snack can help calm frustration, boost energy, and improve their ability to stay engaged and regulated in class.

Unfortunately, our classroom never has enough supplies or snacks to last the whole year. That’s why I’m seeking support to provide pencils, notebooks, markers, and other essentials—along with healthy snacks that give my students the fuel they need to learn and grow emotionally.

Every contribution will directly impact our students’ learning and emotional well-being. Thank you for helping us build a classroom where every student has the tools and nourishment they need to succeed! </content>

    <title>South Bend, IN – Owner</title>
<content type="html">Sound Bend Records is an independent record shop in South Bend that I created to celebrate music, community, and culture. More than just a store, it’s a gathering space where people can connect through vinyl, discover new sounds, and support local artists.

Our collection is carefully curated to spark curiosity, across genres, eras, and moods. Beyond records, we offer unique items inspired by music culture, like candles themed after bands and artists, each designed with its own scent and color.

The heart of SoundBend is community. I want the shop to be a hub for connection and creativity, with plans to host listening parties, local artist pop-ups, and events that bring people together through music. South Bend doesn’t have many spaces that center around vinyl culture, and SoundBend fills that gap by encouraging people to slow down, flip through records, and share experiences face-to-face.

This project matters because music has always been a powerful connector, it builds bridges across backgrounds, inspires nostalgia, and sparks joy. SoundBend Records is about nurturing that connection in South Bend: a place where people come not just to buy vinyl, but to belong.</content>

<content type="html">Milkweed Gardens Inc. is the nonprofit arm of Herstoric Development, focused on creating and caring for green spaces within our block development work. Today, we're excited to spotlight one of our favorite features: the community Pocket Park.

Milkweed Gardens’ work is about transformation: restoring what has been overlooked, nurturing what is emerging, and creating spaces where life and community can flourish. The Pocket Park will transform the vacant lot at 520 S. Michigan into a vibrant green commons designed with and for the neighborhood.

This will be one of the first physical spaces built out on our corner of the block, setting the tone for what else can be possible. The park will include seating, a fire pit, and an outdoor live music area. We will incorporate native landscaping, pollinator gardens, and permeable walkways. In future phases, we will add shade structures and a public restroom. Each feature is chosen to foster gathering, connection, and beauty.

We see beautiful things in Monroe Park’s future and, based on real conversations and real experiences with real residents of the place, we feel confident that the impact of this Pocket Park would be (at least) threefold:

1) Create a thriving and welcoming downtown greenspace with welcoming public amenities that enhance the neighborhood for residents and visitors

2) Offer a community-focused gathering place where neighbors can be, share, and celebrate together

3) Support the local ecosystem through pollinator plantings, stormwater-managing rain gardens and permeable paths, and educational installations highlighting sustainable features.

What is now an empty lot will soon be a place of rest, connection, and joy. What’s more, it will be proof that small green spaces, built with purpose, can anchor a neighborhood and bring people together.

<title>Ann Arbor, MI – Pathways Beyond the Block: College Exposure</title>
<content type="html">Project Title: Pathways Beyond the Block: College Exposure for Young Black Males in 48204

Project Summary:
We propose to take 50 young Black males from Detroit’s 48204 community to visit multiple colleges across Michigan, giving them an opportunity to envision a future beyond the confines of their current environment. These young men—many of whom will be the first in their families to graduate high school—come from single-parent households and communities burdened by high poverty and limited access to resources. This project will open their eyes to the possibilities of higher education, career opportunities, and life beyond the challenges they face daily.

Need Statement:
The 48204 ZIP code in Detroit is home to some of the highest rates of poverty, crime, and limited educational access in Michigan. Many young Black males in this community grow up without exposure to environments that encourage long-term academic or career aspirations. Without intentional intervention, cycles of poverty and limited opportunity are more likely to repeat.

For many, the idea of college feels abstract or unattainable—not because of a lack of intelligence or drive, but because they have never set foot on a campus or met students who look like them succeeding in those spaces. This project seeks to change that by creating a tangible, real-world connection to higher education.

Project Description:
Over the course of a series of trips, we will take 50 young Black males from the 48204 area to tour multiple colleges in Michigan, including but not limited to Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Eastern Michigan University, and Grand Valley State University. Students will meet with current undergraduates, participate in Q&amp;A sessions, and tour dorms, classrooms, and student activity centers.

In addition to exposure, each trip will include mentorship sessions from successful Black male professionals who've come from the same backgrounds.</content>

<title>St. Paul, MN – Capitol Hill Middle School Ski &amp; Snowboard Club</title>
<content type="html">Congratulations to our September 2025 grantee. kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to experience skiing this winter will have that opportunity this year.

According to their application, “There is a beloved winter tradition for the students at Capitol Hill Middle School magnet. It involves bundling up and spending FOUR hours outside. In the dead of winter. Anight! What kids would endure such torture? About 60-70 middle schoolers from all over St. Paul. You won’t even hear any complaining from this group, you’ll hear nothing but shrieks of delight as kids soar down the slopes at Afton Alps, many of them for the first time in their lives. This is the Capitol Hill Ski &amp; Snowboard Club and it is a highlight of the middle school experience for many. The Club transports kids to and from Afton Alps five Friday nights each season. Through a discounted partnership with Afton, and with the help of parent volunteers, Kids are provided bus transportation, equipment, a lift pass and instruction. The program is designed to get kids who have limited or no exposure to the sport, up-and-skiing safely and confidently. For many kids, this will be the start of a life-long love of skiing. For others, it may be their only exposure to the sport–but they’ll walk away with the best memories and a little extra pride. For everyone, it’s a way to get outside in the winter, meet new friends and enjoy the gifts we have in MN that should be available and accessible to all.”</content>

    <title>Philadelphia, PA – Project BANI</title>
<content type="html">We restore abandoned land in Philly and turn it into active food-producing, pollinator friendly, youth-led ecosystems. In under 3 days, with just a shovel, we restored 600+ sq ft of land. Over 20 crops were planted, 50+ lbs of food grown and shared, and 200 lbs of food waste turned into compost. We’ve captured over 100 gallons of rainwater, sequestered an estimated 800 lbs of carbon, and started tracking local pollinator species returning to the site. So far we documented bees, dragonflies, groundhog, ants, worms, and butterflies.

Everything was built from scratch - no machines, no paid staff, just recycled materials, youth hands, and a system we built ourselves. We also developed the full backend: compost logs, visual proof, and internal operations, so this project isn’t just visible - it’s scalable.

This is more than a garden. It’s land restoration, environmental education, food access, and youth leadership - all built by hand, block by block.</content>

    <title>On the Water – The Sea Lemon</title>
<content type="html">We are a small art-centered newspaper called "The Sea Lemon", founded to connect the community of tallship sailors around the world through the common medium of an "illuminated manuscript" zine. Similar to medieval monastic traditions, but in the modern age, traditonally rigged sailing vessels have become a haven for young thriving queer and artistic communities to connect offline.

Aboard these vessels, all the important things one must know are transmitted orally, from person to person. Sailors teach eachother such slow-earned skills as how to wire splice, how to tan fish leather, how to make and repair your own clothing, how to identify a caspian vs. an elegant tern, how to mend sails by hand, how to change the oil on your generator, &amp; how to create bamboo poke-poles to catch monkey-face prickle back eel at low tide.

We are musicians and playrights, artists and naturalists, mechanics and mendicant philosophers who abide by one principle: "Ship, Shipmate, Self"

Through the creation of a publication that celebrates this culture, we hope to strengthen these networks of vibrant creation and knowledge sharing that we hold so dear, and give a new outlet to the voices of sailors-- those who work, live, and dream by the sea.</content>

<content type="html">Hi! My name is Wendy, and I am helping develop our rapid response network here in Newburgh. The main goal is to protect our community and make sure that people are not taken without their due process. Rapid response means that if we get a call about a potential ICE sighting, we send volunteers out to investigate which helps us post verified sightings and refute fake rumors. We started up on July 4, 2025 and we have about 40 volunteers trained and ready to respond. We have responded to about 11 sightings. We are currently helping 1 family that has been affected by the main breadwinner being detained. We hope to keep expanding and recruit more volunteers and teach more community members what to do and how to be prepared.

    <title>Orlando, FL – The Creative Box Project</title>
<content type="html">The Creative Box Project is a 6-week art education initiative that empowers children ages 7–12 through creativity, self-expression, and community. Hosted once a week at one of six Orange County Public Library branches, the program provides weekly curated art boxes filled with quality materials, themed prompts, and positive affirmations designed to boost confidence and encourage emotional growth.

Each week, participants engage in guided group sessions led by teaching artist Dafeney Josue, where they explore new art techniques, learn the fundamentals of art and build supportive connections with peers. The program culminates in a community showcase at the Downtown Orlando Library, celebrating the children’s artwork and voices.

By combining accessible art education with affirming mentorship, The Creative Box Project nurtures the next generation of creative thinkers and demonstrates how art can be a powerful tool for resilience, self-discovery, and joy. This project makes Orlando more awesome by giving children an inspiring, hands-on opportunity to explore art, connect with their community, and experience the delight of seeing their creativity come to life.</content>

<title>Santa Cruz, CA – Barrios Unidos Youth Photo-Telling Cohort </title>
<content type="html">This project is part of my work at Santa Cruz Barrios Unidos. Our youth cohort, made up of students from a local continuation school, will be leading this 'photo-telling' project in our community. Together they will spend six weeks conducting photo journalism around our county, capturing images that represent their points of interest and developing the narrative around the issues they chose to highlight. In our county we see the impacts from housing inequity, environmental destruction, the lack of community responsive policy for our immigrant community, and so much more, all of which deeply impact students in the county. With this project students will be able to hone in on their unique perspectives as youth and create a policy action item to present to local representatives. They will also lead a community event that will benefit the community and showcase their findings. Our last cohort designed t-shirts to fundraise for local undocumented families in need of support. The project is hosted and run by me and Barrios Unidos, but the students have full freedom in how they chose to build out their project and what they want their impact to be. Photo journalism and photography are incredible mediums to reach audiences through and I am excited to host a space for youth to explore their insights and povs. The project will also serve as a form of college and career readiness. Though our focus will be the photo-telling, we will also delve into teachings and topics based on the pedagogy we use here at BU, which is based in Indigenous practice and philosophy. We instill an attitude of respect, humility, love and care through our conversations and exercises with youth groups. We also teach on topics regarding physical health and wellness, mental health and social/community help. Many times students are unable to find the support they need with families or in traditional school settings, so it is important we are here to support them in whatever way we can. </content>

<title>Sydney – Wolkara Elders Wood Carving and Burning</title>
<content type="html">We are planning an Aboriginal Wood carving and Wood burning Workshop as a way to keep our culture alive and connect with Elders in our community who may be experiencing isolation.

Wood carving and burning is a traditional method of making tools, thus contributing to our cultural ways, and giving us an opportunity to share stories, symbols, and connection to Country.

Many of our Elders are isolated, dealing with mental health and disability. There are limited opportunities for them to connect with others in the community and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

This activity aligns with our mission to be a safe and empowering space where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders grow through connection to culture and land. Grounded in respect and self-determination, we share stories, strengthen well-being, reduce social isolation, and keep our culture strong for future generations.

Our group love to meet and participate in arts and crafts, share culture, and learn from each other. However, as a grassroots, community-led not-for-profit, our programs are limited by funding constraints. Without this Awesome funding, it would not be possible to offer this wood carving and burning opportunity to the Elders.

<title>Singapore – Digital Library for Rural Schools in Myanmar</title>
<content type="html">We are building a free, cloud-based Library Management System to transform learning in rural schools and community libraries across Myanmar. Many rural schools face challenges: limited access to books, insufficient infrastructure, and difficulty tracking borrowing and returns. Teachers and librarians often spend hours manually managing inventories, and children have few opportunities to explore educational resources beyond their classrooms. Our platform provides an easy-to-use digital system that allows libraries to manage books, track borrowing, and generate reports efficiently. This ensures children and teachers have immediate access to reading materials, empowering both students and educators to make the most of available resources.

The system is cloud-based, accessible from anywhere, eliminating the need for costly on-site servers. It allows multiple schools and libraries to operate under a single platform, making it scalable and sustainable. By digitizing library management, teachers can focus on teaching, and students can engage with reading more efficiently. The platform also supports multi-tenant libraries, enabling smaller schools to share resources while maintaining individual records securely.

This project empowers underserved communities by providing equitable access to educational resources in regions where literacy is limited. Beyond digitizing book management, the system develops critical reading skills, encourages self-directed learning, and supports lifelong education. Strengthening educational infrastructure in rural areas contributes to better academic outcomes, higher literacy rates, and improved educational equity. Our vision is to scale across Asia, bringing digital library access to more rural schools and creating a network of digitally enabled educational spaces serving thousands of students and educators.</content>

    <title>Ottawa – FAB Festival 2025</title>
<content type="html">August’s Awesome Ottawa award goes to Shireen Faza and the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre’s [Incubator13] (https://incubator13.ca), to support the FAB Festival – a celebration of everyday creativity.

FAB Festival is a free community-based event being held Saturday, November 22, at the former Rideau High School, inspired by the former Ottawa Mini Maker Faire.

“There has been no comparable celebration of do-it-yourself creativity in Ottawa since 2018,” says Shireen, "when the last maker faire was organized by Artengine.”

“Our community resource centre understands that celebrating everyday creativity represents an ideal activity for bringing people together from all walks of life to enjoy and be inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of fellow community members.”

“A key consideration of the FAB Festival,” she notes, “will be providing under-represented members of the community an opportunity to showcase their creative talent and projects. This will help to develop a sense of belonging, for example, for recent immigrants and other community members who feel disenfranchised.”

You can get your free ticket to the FAB Festival [here] (https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/fab-festival-2025-tickets-1552770110199).

Shireen is Project Officer at Incubator13, and herself an immigrant to Canada.</content>

<title>New York City, NY – 100 Resumes in One Day</title>
<content type="html">We are happy to announce that our August grant has been awarded to **100 Resumes in One Day: Latino Power 5-Hour**, a free event happening in Queens this October during Hispanic Heritage Month. In just five hours, 100 Latino immigrant professionals will receive hands-on support to build a U.S.-ready résumé, guided by bilingual facilitators including a recruiter, AI résumé expert, and career coach.

This event was born from the heart, powered by the belief that professional migrants deserve second chances and that skills can be transferred, re-valued, and celebrated. It was founded by Ximena Velez, a Colombian professional who arrived in New York ten years ago, unsure of where to begin. Today, she works in communications and leads Latinos United for Career Advancement, a platform that helps others to reconnect with their professional identities.

In Ximena's own words: _"100 Resumes in One Day is more than a workshop — it’s a movement to remind Latino professionals that they don’t start from scratch, they start with experience. I believe immigrant professionals deserve the chance to contribute to their new home — not just to survive, but to live fully, through their vocations, careers, and callings."_

<title>Durham, NC – Urban Folklore: Stage to Page</title>
<content type="html">I started Urban Folklore as a way to provide a different kind of platform for poets. Artists are asked to perform, but aren't often given a chance to talk about their work, their process, and their inspirations. That is reserved for later in their career and in many cases tied to a level of success (i.e. masterclasses). We do not get to talk to independent and emerging artists while they are navigating their careers. We don't get to share pitfalls, successes, lessons learned, or breakthroughs. We don't get to find out about the process of crafting the poems put on stage or on the page.

I wanted to change that and see if audiences would enjoy being able to not only hear and experience the work, but also hear about the work. Even more, they get to talk to the artist directly.

I want to present a special edition with two poets who have established strong reputations for their work on stage and have also recently published books. These are two award winning artists who have had to manage very different environments with their art. The spoken word scene is different from the publishing world and there are many who would want to hear about that difference.

I always say that we love art but don't love artists as much. We forget that there is a person behind the art and that person has a story to tell. This is an exercise in centering the artist and what it is about that person that allows for such beautiful art to be created.

This event would take place at Northstar Church of the Arts in Durham, NC. I have a membership there that gives me access to the venue. I am looking to do this event in October. </content>

<title>Disability – Rescue, Train, and Transform: Hearing Service Dogs</title>
<content type="html">At Northwest Dog Rescue and Service Training Center, we believe second chances save lives, twice. We rescue dogs from shelters that would otherwise face euthanasia, and we train them to become highly skilled hearing service dogs for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Every dog we place is provided at no cost to the recipient.

But our mission doesn’t stop with the dogs. We integrate people in addiction recovery into the care and training process, giving them job skills, structure, and a renewed sense of purpose. Many of our volunteers say the experience is life-saving, not just for the animals, but for themselves.

We operate in a nonprofit-in-formation status with our EIN secured and bank account open. We’re already building partnerships with local shelters, the deaf community, and recovery centers in Washington and Idaho. Donna, my partner, is hearing impaired, and I (Jason) know firsthand the lifesaving power of a service dog. My dog Monkey was my anchor after losing my wife and father.

Equip our first group of dogs with training gear, vests, and sound-response tools.

Cover vet checks and vaccinations for incoming rescues.

Print outreach materials to connect with deaf clients and recovery centers.

This small investment will have an immediate, visible impact: more dogs saved, more people served, and more lives transformed.

**What our grantee is saying:** “This grant is a vital step in helping us provide second chances for both dogs and people. With this funding, we can continue to rescue dogs, train them as hearing service animals, and support individuals in recovery. It means the world to us and those we serve.”

**What our trustees are saying:** “I love how this project gives twice the impact to a person and to an animal, both of whom need safety, love, support. Thank you for saving twice the lives.”</content>

    <title>Toronto – Concerts on Connolly</title>
<content type="html">Concerts on Connolly is a community concert series that takes place in Wadsworth Park in the Weston-Pelham community in Toronto.

Every year since 2020, Concerts on Connolly has hosted between 3–4 free live musical performances in the summer, outdoors at Wadsworth Park. This year, Concerts on Connolly plans to host the first free winter concert as part of the series. The date for the concert is Sunday, January 25, from 5–8PM.

The winter concert will be hosted at a local establishment within the community, transforming an indoor space into a cozy gathering spot for music and connection. We will recreate a version of what we do in the summer into a winter community celebration, with seasonal décor, warm lighting, and an inviting stage. The concert would start with a 1 hour drumming workshop for all ages, followed by two 45-minute sets featuring The Doghouse Orchestra, an eclectic Toronto-based ensemble that blends elements of gospel, jazz, funk, and country. Local vendors will be invited to take part, and activities for children will include face painting and a friendly polar bear mascot.

The Awesome Foundation grant will fund both the drumming workshop and workshop a free hot beverage station, serving hot chocolate, cider, mulled wine, etc.

Concerts on Connolly strives to ensure that everyone has equal access and the opportunity to participate, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and valued. We believe that quality programming and cultural activities should be cost-free for all, which is why we do not charge our audiences for programming. We use a pass-the-hat/PWYC system in addition to guaranteed performance fees, allowing audiences the option to directly support the artists and their work.

This winter event will extend our mission into the colder months, offering neighbours a joyful reason to gather, connect, and celebrate culture together.</content>

We want to have a monthly meet up to learn, share and contribute to gardens built at the studio but also plan and activate seasonal river clean ups with aid from SARA and River AID SA. We are also receiving generous plant donations from local growers and nurseries. The Gardening Club will focus on local environmental efforts, native gardening, food production. This is an all ages gardening club and would not only help teach the basics of gardening but also beautify our neighborhood, and introduce more biodiversity. 12 garden club meetings, 4 major river clean up efforts and the chance to change our small area for the better through gardening, education and culture. </content>

    <link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="https://www.awesomefoundation.org/pt/projects/359982-intergenerational-drag-bingo"/>
    <title>Gloucester, MA – Intergenerational Drag Bingo</title>
<content type="html">Our project is a joint venture with LGBTeens of Cape Ann and Rose Baker Senior Center and will be presented as such if we make it to the finalists. The LGBTeens of Cape Ann is putting on an awesome drag bingo event that will not only bring older folks to play bingo, but also younger folks to play bingo and watch drag! This event will have family-friendly drag performers, as performances are often limited to 18-21+ (a lot of youth who would like to see drag are unable to-limiting it to adults). For seniors there are challenges to seeing drag performances as well. There are often inaccessible venues that don't accommodate people in wheelchairs or walkers (many seniors need mobility aids to get around).

Younger generations (tweens, teens, and adults) often are not in spaces where seniors are and vice versa. It's important to bridge this gap between seniors and the younger generations for a number of reasons. One, it reduces isolation for seniors and younger people. There's often a lot of isolation in this incredibly digital age and people can get lonely. Two, these two generations have a lot we can learn from each other. Tweens, teens, and young adults can teach seniors how to use technology (e.g. smartphones, tablets, social media) while seniors can teach younger generations about life advice, events that have happened in the past (e.g. protests, prior presidencies that mimic our own, what they did in school). Lastly, it builds a sense of empathy for both communities. Younger generations can become more patient and compassionate due to the struggles older folks may face, while older adults can learn more from a younger generation's perspective in an ever-changing world. </content>

    <title>Chicago, IL – OP*ERRATIC</title>
<content type="html">Take six cups of opera singers, mix with three tablespoons each of recitative, aria, and chorus. Season with audience suggestions as desired. Allow to marinate for twelve weeks. Bake for seventy minutes and serve hot. Feeds forty.

Op*erratic is a fully unscripted operatic improv spectacle, where the plot, music, and mayhem are created in real time. Armed with classical voices and a flair for the absurd, our cast transforms audience suggestions into spontaneous stories full of soaring arias, tragic misunderstandings, and unexpected finales.

It’s one part opera, one part improv, and all parts hilarious. No script, no safety net — just high notes and higher stakes. And, of course, there is no place better to cultivate this innovative new operatic event than Chicago, the home of improv theater.

Formated like an improv class, lead by Chicago Fringe Opera's Producing Artistic Director George Cederquist, 12-16 singers are trained in the skills of improv while also incorporating Cederquist's unique formula for doing the seemingly impossible - creating an opera on the fly. Multiple performances are scheduled at Borelli’s Pizzeria, which we are able to keep open to the public with only a donation collection.

In addition to our performances at Borelli's, we will be featured at Chicago Live! on Navy Pier on September 21st in a free performance for the public. We hope to continue to develop Op*erratic as a teachable improv program for opera singers, helping young artists develop their stage craft and flexibility on stage in addition to the seemingly magical ability to improvise an opera in the moment on stage.

Opera is AWESOME. Improv is AWESOME. Improv Opera in Chicago is SUPER DUPER AWESOME!

The Awesome Foundation grant will cover the fee for our pianist, Brian Rasmussen. There are very few pianists in the world, let alone Chicago, who are AWESOME enough to improvise accompaniment for our singers in the style of Mozart. Securing the commitment of Mr. Rasmussen is hugely important to the success of Op*erratic. </content>

    <title>Rockport, MA – Harvest/holiday skiffs </title>
<content type="html">Each year in October, the Rockport Garden Club places ten dinghies around town. They are filled with chrysanthemums, hay bales, squash, pumpkins and gourds - and provide harvest beauty for the town.
After Thanksgiving we repurpose them as Holiday boats, placing a lobster trap, buoys, a Christmas tree with lights, and various greens and berries. They are much beloved by the town.

    <title>Rhode Island – Writer’s Block: Community Music Writing Series</title>
<content type="html">For August 2025, AFRI is supporting "Writer’s Block," a community songwriting and professional development series created by and for BIPOC musicians in Providence. The program includes weekly open writing sessions and three key workshops: Songwriting for Sync, Artist Branding, and Music Business 101.

Writer’s Block reduces barriers by offering free, high-quality programming in an accessible venue (AS220). Participants receive payment for their contributions and leave with new work, new knowledge, and new connections. Their goal is "not only to help artists grow creatively and professionally, but to sustain and archive the cultural contributions of Rhode Island’s Black and Brown musicians."</content>

    <title>State College, PA – Music &amp; Art for Purpose</title>
<content type="html">Music &amp; Art for Purpose is a new performance-based program dedicated to using the arts to build bridges, strengthen communities, and inspire meaningful dialogue. We know from experience that music, theater, and dance are among the most powerful tools for human connection. The arts transcend politics and personal differences; they speak directly to the heart, spark empathy, and motivate social change.
With this program, we will collaborate with local and regional theater companies, musicians, and dancers to create original, socially relevant performances. Our ensemble-based approach will bring together seasoned artists and emerging young voices, inviting inter-generational participation at every step. Through workshops, rehearsals, and performances, participants will learn from one another, exchange perspectives, and experience the joy of creating something together.
Each performance will be designed to be thought-provoking, dynamic, and accessible drawing audiences into conversations about community, compassion, and the shared human experience. Whether someone joins as a performer, musician, dancer, or audience member, they will leave not only entertained but inspired to learn more. The first project of Music &amp; Art for a Purpose is a series dedicated to using the arts as a means of building and strengthening community. We began with our efforts at our Juneteenth celebration and even hosted a fun Night of Improv in early July. But now we are pleased to announce the official launch of this series as we introduce Mondays with Meaning. The second of two projects under this program are Frank Cloke &amp; Friends, a jazz band performing and teaching at the same time. A chance for the audience of both community people and students to learn how jazz works and give students and community members a chance to join the house band on stage. We will meet the first Wednesday of each month at the CommUnity Zone.

    <title>Chicago, IL – Quilt Church Chicago</title>
<content type="html">Quilt Church is a recurring community hand-quilting project in which rotating cohorts of queer artists learn fundamental hand sewing techniques and complete a full quilt from start to finish. Each cohort spans the course of five months and ends with a quilt raffle, funds from which are donated to a local Chicago organization. Situated within feminist and queer histories of community craft practice and passage, Quilt Church aims to be a space for accessible craft education, skill sharing, collective research and queer community. The project is organized by Stevie Emrich in partnership with, and hosted by, Walls Turned Sideways.

Walls Turned Sideways (WTS) is an art gallery, studio, &amp; community space dedicated to artists and communities impacted by incarceration. Their mission is to build bridges that connect people in prison, their families, artists, and other community members using art, exhibitions, and political education with a focus on collective liberation, healing and abolition. Past and current collaborators of WTS include Quilt Church Chicago, Prison + Neighborhoods Art and Education Project (PNAP), Cannabis Equity Illinois, Chicago Torture Justice Center, and Coalition to Decarcerate Illinois.

With this additional support from The Awesome Foundation, Quilt Church will be able to fund two cohorts running simultaneously: one for experienced quilters that focuses on more intricate pattern work and color theory, and a second group for beginners that dives more deeply into technique and traditional craft methodologies.

    <title>Conservation and Climate – 1Acre Project</title>
<content type="html">The 1Acre Project is a grassroots movement turning underused land—like lawns, parking lots, and empty lots—into vibrant, tech-connected community gardens that grow fresh food, create jobs, and build purpose.

We launched in Nashville in late 2024 and have already secured five donated plots, built six compost/recycling stations, and gathered over 450 active volunteers. Our app—developed with local students—gamifies real-world impact: users earn points for gardening, composting, and helping the community, which they can redeem for rewards and experiences with local businesses.

We’ve partnered with schools, soil companies, and are activating local influencers to raise awareness and funds. With every build, we track food grown, water used, and volunteer hours—and dedicate gardens to causes like food justice, mental health, or pollinator protection. Our mission is simple: feed people, reward purpose, and change the system one acre at a time.</content>

<title>Conservation and Climate – BEAM for the oceans!</title>
<content type="html">Project BEAM is Love The Oceans' youth-led coral reef restoration project in Jangamo Bay, Mozambique, tackling one of the biggest threats to our reef: overgrown algae. Populations of herbivorous fish like parrotfish and rabbitfish have been destroyed through overfishing but they're vital for keeping algae levels in check. Without these species, algae is smothering our corals and preventing new coral larvae from settling, which affects the entire food web and reduces fish catches for local fishers. Our data shows that algae cover on our reefs has more than doubled from 2018-2024 alone.

To tackle this issue, instead of relying on expensive methods like coral transplantation, in BEAM we're using an innovative, low-cost “sea-weeding” method, in collaboration with scientists in Australia who have been successful with this method. We'll manually remove algae and give native corals the space they need to recover naturally - like weeding your garden but underwater. This will be the first trial of the technique outside Australia, bringing a globally relevant, scalable solution to a country with limited technical resources. It’s a hands-on, science-driven approach integrating restoration with local capacity building.

We ran an initial fundraiser that successfully launched the project, but challenging diving conditions meant we need more dives than we expected to set up the coral plots. Without additional funding, we cannot complete this crucial first phase, and the project will stall before we can demonstrate impact.

This grant will allow us to finish establishing the restoration plots and begin monitoring coral recovery. We’re training local youth in reef restoration and data collection, integrating our work into our community education programs, and showing how restoring reefs directly supports biodiversity, food security, and climate resilience. BEAM is a movement for ocean stewardship that could inspire coastal communities far beyond Mozambique.</content>

    <title>St. Paul, MN – The Healing Pen &amp; Mic: A Journaling &amp; Podcast Proj</title>
<content type="html">We are proud to announce a second grant in August. 2025. Congratulations!

The Healing Pen &amp; Mic: A Journaling &amp; Podcast Project for the Cancer Community supports cancer patients and survivors in the St. Paul area through a unique journaling workshop series and companion podcast. Our project offers a vital, no-cost space for individuals to process their cancer journeys, find emotional solace, and cultivate resilience through expressive writing.

This four-hour workshop session, designed for 15-20 participants, provides participants with a beautiful journal, quality writing tools, and guided prompts to help them explore their experiences, fears, hopes, and newfound strengths. We'll foster a supportive environment where attendees can connect with peers and learn practical self-care techniques. Refreshments and a light lunch, featuring easily digestible and nutritious options, will be provided, ensuring comfort and care.

Crucially, "The Healing Pen &amp; Mic" extends its impact beyond the workshop walls. With voluntary and consensual participation, attendees can choose to share their experiences with journaling (not their private entries) in a podcast component. These recorded conversations will amplify diverse voices from the cancer community, fostering empathy, reducing isolation, and offering inspiration and validation to a wider audience. The podcast will be distributed through various podcast platforms, such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and more, reaching listeners within the St. Paul community and beyond.</content>
