Cleveland, OH – Bluestone Court Coalition Mentorship Program

The Bluestone Court Coalition is committed to building educational excellence, social responsibility, community cohesion, athletic achievement, and violence prevention approaches through youth mentoring at public basketball courts in Euclid, OH. These specific courts located at Euclid Ave. and East 260th are in a historically underserved area of Euclid where less investment has happened in the past. It is important to the BCC to bring a focus and services to this area, and specifically the youth who reside in it. A mentor will be present seven days a week, 4 hours per day during peak hours of use at the public basketball courts. Our mentors will build relationships and trust with youth players and may provide light coaching and ref duties to keep the games flowing in a fair and fun manner. Mentors will build youth participation into decisions regarding additional programming, community-building events, and potential design improvements at the basketball courts/park. For example: What improvements would youth like to see at the park (lighting? Drinking fountain?) What food should we have at events? Should we organize a tournament? Things like this. Mentors will perform community outreach to build participation.

Cleveland, OH – Saving Young Women through the Arts

Our plan is to continue providing young females who are at-risk and have low socio-economic ages 12-21 weekly workshops in the Arts in order to help empower them and provide them with a positive outlet. We will offer the young ladies piano and voice lessons, drawing and painting, photography, and choir development for them to be creative. This is important to us because we recognize the tremendous positive impact the Arts have on people's lives. This program is important to our community because we offer a safe space for young females to get off the streets and do something that can have a positive impact on them as well as empower them all the while providing positive, supportive role models. Our program has 1 piano and voice teacher, one photographer and one visual artist who creates murals, 3 volunteers who will help assist with the workshops as well as run the drawing, painting, spoken word poetry and photography workshops, and one Producer who will help the kids produce a song. We will provide the piano, voice, choir, drawing, painting, and photography lessons at our office as well as taking field trips to parks and places where the kids can experience nature to draw and paint and work on writing their song.

Kitchener-Waterloo – KW Creative Circle

This past summer, I hosted monthly open mics and creative writing circles at 283 Duke St, under the name KW Creative Circle. With the initial success of these events, I hope to continue to host and expand these events into the fall and winter. The pandemic weakened the sense of community here in KW. I am taking it upon myself to bring people together once again, hosting a space where the artistically curious can experiment and share. I am quickly finding that I am not alone in craving these communal events. Over the last 3 months, I hosted 3 open mics and 3 creative writing circles in downtown Kitchener, finding those with the similar desire to be in community. At the creative writing circles, we come together to write. I bring original prompts to a group of writers (and writers-to-be) and we spend some time seeing where these prompts take us in our writing. I received lovely comments from two attendees saying that this circle helped them work past a block or slump they were experiencing in their writing. At the open mics, we have writers, musicians, dancers, singers, all telling a story through their artistic medium. I am excited to tell you that twice now I have introduced myself to a first-time attendee who was not planning to perform, only for the attendee to become inspired by others and perform their own pieces at the event. Though the art and writing is the “point” of these events, the inspiration and connections that attendees are making with the art, with each other, and within themselves is truly the “point”. The open mics are now receiving double-digit attendance. Online interest on meetup and Instagram is steadily increasing. I am outgrowing the humble setup which I currently have, and am requesting funds to maintain attendee comfort, event functionality, and expand outreach for my creative circles. I hope the grant reviewers can see why these events would appreciate financial support and attention.

On the Water – See Down

I intend to replace a special manhole cover located in a sidewalk adjacent to Dolores Park, San Francisco, with a custom fabricated fully transparent cover of equivalent durability and load-bearing capacity in order to open a curious and educational window into the civic water infrastructure of the city. This specific manhole cover is specially designated for access to the system of cisterns that compose a redundant supply of firefighting water. Often overlooked or unheard of, over 170 of these cisterns lie scattered under San Francisco. In order to attract attention, a special pressure reactive lighting fixture will be placed beneath the cover to draw curious passersby with a visual lure in an unusual location. Along with the transparent cover, an informational brass plaque will briefly describe the historical significance of these cisterns to San Francisco. I will install the new cover with help from The San Francisco Hiking Club, an art and experience design collective that I co-founded, that produces experiences through creative repurposing of under-utilized city infrastructure, as a playground to expand the public’s perspectives of the spaces they inhabit. Fellow artists will provide support with the fabrication & the Club’s lead documentarian is willing to film and photograph the process and installation to share with his ~13k followers.

Orlando, FL – Snap! Orlando x The Nomadic Photo Ark

The Nomadic Photo Ark will travel to Central Florida to record the portraits and stories of area residents as part of photographer Monica Jane Frisell’s ongoing national project, Portrait of US. Frisell travels with a converted cargo trailer photo dark room conducting interviews in small communities across the country. In collaboration with Snap! Orlando, Frisell will capture the portraits of local community members in Parramore. Residents will have the unique experience of having their portraits taken and will receive their own heirloom quality black & white print to keep. Event in association with local community activist Jennifer Desire, who has a history of providing food and friendship to people who are homeless. Weekend of January 14-15, 2023 at 814 W Church St, Orlando, parking lot in Parramore.

Westminster, MD – Carroll County Instrument Tryout Day

Carroll Music Teachers (CMT) is an organization of independent music teachers working together to provide educational and cultural musical opportunities for the Carroll County community. We started working collectively after Coffey Music announced they would close in early May, and since then, we have been full steam ahead in developing the educational mission championed by Coffey Music for over 35 years. Generations of students have seen a positive impact on their lives as a result of the philanthropic services provided under the umbrella of Coffey Music as the musical cultural hub of Carroll County. One of Coffey Music’s critical community services was to reduce the barrier of entry to music by providing a free instrument tryout day for any student interested in music. In order to enrich our community and to ensure that any community member can still equitably engage with musical opportunity, we are seeking support in continuing the instrument tryout day. We are taking the business component out of the instrument tryout day and enshrining it as a tradition within our community.

Vegan (Inativo) – Grants 4 Animals: Train Your Own Grant Writer

I am building a business as a grant writer working exclusively with animal related nonprofits who pay me by the hour. In 2022, I have already earned more than $275,000 that has gone directly to animal related nonprofits, mostly vegan and vegan owned organizations. One issue I have found is that many nonprofits can't actually afford a grant writer, either on staff or contracted like me. So, I am building a Train Your Own Grant writer course. The course will be a 30 Day/30 lesson course that covers everything a nonprofit would need to train their own grant writer. It also includes a coaching call with me. Topics will include how to organize grants, where to find them, writing letters of inquiry, writing grant proposals, and grant reporting. I have already started the course, and expect to launch it in October 2022. During this time, I continue to work with my full service grant clients and have a waiting list for future clients.

St. Paul, MN – Celebrating Student's School Successes

AwesomeStPaul is proud to announce our September 2022 grant winner “Celebrating Student’s School Success.” St Paul Public Schools have over 1,700 students experiencing homelessness and living in foster care. These students work very hard to get to school and achieve academic success all the while supporting their families and trying to manage the uncertainty of their lives outside of the school hours. Students live in shelters, hotels, bus stations, at a friend's home and the list goes on. Everyday these students work to get to their schools as they know that education is the ticket for them to achieve their goals for both them and their families. AwesomeStPaul chose this request because we want to encourage all students to reach for their goals. According to Project REACH's social worker Heather Alden, “The luxury for a family to order a pizza to celebrate a good week or a student to stop at Chipotle with a friend is unimaginable when you are barely able to keep yourself or family housed. To support our students' hard work and the support of their families, we would like to use the $1,000 to purchase dinners for student and a friend or a family to celebrate during the school year., a birthday or a milestone. It is no small effort to navigate life and being able to have moments to celebrate would be such a gift.”

Newcastle – A Splash of Colour Swimming

A pilot swimming confidence program for CALD women by a CALD woman. WHAT – A 12 week ‘learn to swim’ pilot program targeted at 20 CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) women encouraging them to overcome barriers to swimming. WHY – Swimming is an inherent part of modern Australian culture. As a regular swimmer myself, I see the lack of diversity in our community swimming pools. Additionally, the risk of drowning is higher among ethnic minority communities. Many CALD women hesitate to organise swimming lessons for themselves due to perceived cultural, social and financial barriers. Other hesitancy factors include fear of drowning, aquaphobia, cultural modesty requirements and language barriers. HOW – The program will include swimming lessons provided by volunteer AUSTSWIM trainers, interaction with adult swimming teachers and leaners and people who have overcome aquaphobia. The program will also address social issues that are unique to a number of CALD women such as managing their hair during and after swimming, body image perception, modest swimwear (if culturally appropriate) and access to a wide range of swim wear options. OUTCOMES – Swimming is a great and healthy opportunity to be socially inclusive. My goal is to break stereotypes and help CALD women break social and financial barriers to swimming. By providing an avenue for CALD women to participate in swimming activities, it will foster a sense of belonging and community. The A Splash of Colour program will also promote active and healthy activities in marginalised communities to help them feel safe and confident when using community and private swimming pools. Hands On Gainesville developed the Sci-Map to guide our community to see STEM concepts at work in the world. We provided hands on activities to do before, during, and after you visit natural or community built sites. We design the activities so that they can be done with things that are readily available to households. But there are some sites that are better explored with simple scientific instruments. We are partnering with public libraries to provide kits to be checked out so activities requiring less easily acquired instruments can be accessible to all. We can then provide activities for families to do at sites that use microscopes, binoculars, measuring tools, etc. and have them accessible for all.

De deelnemers bereikt Iris door samen te werken met hulpverlenerorganisaties zoals Lister en Buurtteams Utrecht. De creatieve sessies zijn gratis voor de deelnemers om het zo laagdrempelig mogelijk te maken. Iris biedt dus een veilige plek waar je je verhaal kwijt kunt en wat een tussenstap kan zijn voor een volgende stap die nu nog even te groot is.

Sydney – Holroyd High School Multicultural Day

On the 16th September, Holroyd high School will be hosting a multicultural day for all of the students. Multicultural day is generally held every year, however due to Covid it has not occurred for the last 3 years. We hope to make this year bigger and better! Due to the school having a large Intensive English School, we have the pleasure of experiencing over 44 different cultures within the school! This is a big reason we wish to celebrate such a special day. The purpose of the day is to celebrate the diversity and enhance the sense of community that is experienced within the school. We will be starting the day with a morning ceremony, including a flag march, and multicultural speakers.There will also be different cultural performances and speeches from students and external providers showcasing their culture. The school will be hosting food trucks and stalls from as many different cuisines as possible that students will have access to at lunch. We will also have cultural activities running, in which students can participate and learn about all the cultures within the school! The project has been on hold for 3 years, and its the largest event for the school. The funding will assist with financing speakers, performers and food stalls for students to access Due to majority of our students coming from low socio economic communities, the funding will assist with reducing out of pocket costs for the students on the day. For example, we could utilise the funding to ensure the food vans are free or only a gold coin donation is required. Similarly, the funding could assist with financing performers and activities for students to participate in. This event will allow the community to embrace the diversity and experiences of the Cumberland population. Multicultural day will allow the community and students to engage with, learn about and embrace different cultural identities. Many of our students spend time with students of similar backgrounds, ethnicities and world views. In orchestrating this event it will be an opportunity for students to expand their world view, have conversation with students different from them, and in so doing may reduce prejudice and bias, associated with a lack of understanding of other cultures.

Watertown, SD (Inativo) – Ritual Addictions 20th Anniversary Family Event

Ritual Addictions will be celebrating their 20th Business Anniversary in the Watertown area. Due to this monumental anniversary, Paulie (the owner) will be giving back to those who supported him by hosting a family fun event! This will entail a children's carnival with games, balloon artist, chalk art contest, food and inflatables. During the evening, we will host a street dance with bands coming from Paulie's hometown in Wisconsin and local artists. We will also have food trucks to assist the crowd's needs. This is all coming together lovely and the save the date has been dispersed! It will be Sept 24th (approved by City) starting 2-4 for children then 8-12 for adult event. *Paulie has provided services such as commissioned art pieces, large murals, tattooing and piercing to locals as well as people all over the United States. Yanadi women’s group is a Social Support group run through Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation. We are the ONLY Aboriginal community controlled organisation in the Suthlerand Shire. The Yanadi Women’s Group meets weekly on Fridays and brings together Aboriginal women to participate in a range of activities such as Yarning Circles, Arts and Crafts, Candle Making, BBQs, Traditional Weaving, Jewellery making, Cake baking and much more. Yanadi women’s group also have regular health and well-being activities. Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation (KAC) is a not for profit organisation that incorporated on 21st November 1994 under the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976..KAC is a drop in centre for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community living in the Sutherland Shire and St George areas. Kurranulla strives to develop closer ties between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal groups and promote Aboriginal culture. Covid-19 has caused serious health implications for the Aboriginal communities of Sutherland Shire and St George, particularly in relation to our Social and Emotional Wellbeing and community connectedness. The program will assist our mob with rebuilding social connections in a culturally safe setting.

Newburgh, NY – Newburgh's Fire Prevention & Safety Fair

Fleurieu – Willow Creek Leadership adventure

The following proposal has come out of consultation and brainstorming with the Fleurieu Coast Youth Advisory Committee, known as YAC. Our YAC members, comprised of 12-25 years old, have identified that they would like the opportunity to develop and foster some leadership skills particularly around problem solving, strategy and performing in under pressure situations. Our YAC members have also been planning an “amazing race” event in our region for Young People to participate in as one of their youth led events. They have developed a framework around outcomes and guidelines however have found themselves stuck with how to move forward with this event. ‘Willow Creek Adventure Camp’ is able to facilitate a leadership day for 20 Young people in our region develop these skills through a range of fun, yet challenging activities which will also encourage stronger relationships between peers, they also offer an opportunity to participate in an ‘Amazing race’ which will help them to move their current plan forward. The proposed event will begin with a bus collection from Yankalilla. This is a key resource as transport is the number one barrier for our young people as there is no public transport in our region. Activities that will be facilitated will include an Amazing Race event in Victor Harbor, this will provide them will skills to further develop the event they have planned. Team challenges, survivor style incorporate problem solving challenges based on the dysfunction of a team promoting communication, creative thinking and team work. They include a mixture of interactive physical and mental puzzles and relays. A Raft building challenge includes participants are given a range of equipment including PVC tubes, timber, teams and rope. Teams needs to construct a raft and use it to get across a body of water in a given time frame. The day will then end with a shared tea and reflection around a camp fire before the bus returns our young people back to Yankalilla.

Melbourne (Inativo) – Karuna Women's Sewing Project

The Karuna Women's Sewing Project has two streams, a Multicultural Mothers Sewing Group on Thursdays and a Multicultural Youth Group on Saturdays. All run from a committee member's garage. All participants are from the Myanmar refugee community in Wyndham City and come from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Karen, Karenni, Chin, Rakhine, Mon, Shan, and Bamar. The project is currently funded by Karuna's committee donations and run by Karuna's volunteers. It was started as an opportunity to support women and young girls from the diverse and often divided Myanmar refugee community. Educational projects taught by Karunas registered volunteers include classes and workshops in sewing and textiles, English language, adult literacy and computing. Each week, the groups meet to share their common interest in textile arts, including sewing, knitting, crochet, tailoring, clothing alterations and preservation of traditional weaving. The project provides the women and girls with a creative space to learn new skills and share stories and their unique cultural skills and knowledge in woven products such as bags, shirts, sarongs, scarves, and dresses in a safe and welcoming environment. We strive to build an inclusive and supportive community where vulnerable girls and women are safe, have access to education and training, are empowered to participate in their communities and preserve their traditional cultural practices. The project aims to drive social and economic change through networking and sharing the unique skills and art of Myanmar refugees with local businesses and individuals. Women and girls play a crucial role in rebuilding and strengthening communities, which is why we are investing in their future. State College, PA – Centre County: Pollinator Paradise

Many people love and care about endangered species such as panda bears, tigers, black rhinos and blue whales. But none of animals are native to Centre County. It can make locals feel like the only way they can contribute to conservation efforts is to donate money to conservation organizations doing work elsewhere. But that’s not true! We have many valuable species to protect in our own community, including endangered species such as monarch butterflies. Community members need to be shown how they can make a huge difference to the environment through small actions that they can make – literally – in their own backyards. Our project is focused on making Centre County more pollinator-friendly by encouraging community members to create pollinator-friendly habitat across Centre County. We will operationalize this goal by broadening the scope of home garden pollinator habitat by creating pollinator-friendly gardening kits with seeds and locally specific and easy-to-follow growing information. The kits will be dispersed to local community members alongside high quality pollinator programming tailored to each audience. Our project will have a tangible and lasting impact on the community by an increase in pollinator-friendly habitat that is individually managed by home gardeners. This dispersed strategy will encourage widespread habitat across Centre County. Our approach is different than a community garden as a central focal point, which would require a long-term commitment by a single organization (such as our club) to it manage into the future. Instead, our strategy will rely on individuals to manage the habitat in the long term, which they have a vested interest in because it is - literally – in their backyard! We hope that this project has ripple effects across the community as neighbors share the new information (and seeds!) with neighbors. We will encourage this behavior on the information included in the kits.

North Minneapolis, MN – Sistahs with Soul

I want to help mentor, prep, and identify resources and support for them as they transition from the community into college spaces. A lot of youth I have mentored over the years have struggled with leaving the familiarity of the support systems they have in north Minneapolis transition to different regions and I believe if there was a program set up for them to continue to feel connected and supported they would progress the same way they do when being in community.

Disability – New Disabled South

New Disabled South (NDS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has built a disability rights and disability justice strategy for the South. This strategy will first focus on creating the Southern Disability Justice Coalition, a partnership of disability organizations, activists, and advocates throughout the South to align on organizing and advocacy. NDS will also advocate for impactful state and local disability policy, as well as track bad legislation that puts disabled people, particularly disabled BIPOC, in the South at further risk. Additionally, NDS will conduct research on the issues that impact disabled folks across 13 Southern states and work to propose policy solutions that help advance NDS's vision: a South where liberation and justice for all disabled people is achievable. There is currently no regional disability rights and/or disability justice strategy in the US, so NDS would be the first of its kind. With one-third of the 61 million disabled people in America residing in the South, the majority being BIPOC, and with those numbers increasing due to Long COVID, there has never been a more important time to invest in disability justice for the South. Melbourne (Inativo) – Custom-Made Laryngoscopes for Australian Mammals

Being a specialist in the development of medical devices for wildlife in Australia, I often come across unique and challenging projects. Australian mammals have a unique physiology. One major issue is the tight and difficult to access throat and mouth. During medical procedures and heath-checks, a laryngoscope blade must be used inside the throat to position and push done on the glottis at the mid part of the larynx to make way for the insertion of a breathing tube. Australian mammals, including koalas, kangaroos and wombats have very narrow inner mouth openings and tight cheeks. Current laryngoscope blades are generally designed for humans, or animals with large and accessible mouths - making the current laryngoscope blades bulky, difficult and sometimes impossible to use with Australian mammals. This is even more an issue for juvenile animals. For years now I have been having request after request by zoo staff and wildlife veterinarians to develop a range of bespoke laryngoscope blades specifically for Australian fauna, especially now that many are endangered and require careful attention. My objectives: Design blades for adult Australian mammals Design miniature blades for juvenile Australian mammals Previously, I designed and fabricated two prototypes for avian use. Although a little narrow, they were successfully used with juvenile mammals, including joey koalas, but they require modifications and element changes to make more applicable to mammal use. As seen in the attachments. Also, attached is a prototype laryngoscope system that I made for Zoos Victoria to use with their wombats and wallabies. This too works, but needs quite a bit of refinement making it easer to use, and with a universal blade that can be used with standard laryngoscope light sources. Using the above as a starting point, I will refine the exact mechanical and design elements required for their optimal use with veterinarians at various wildlife hospitals around Australia.

Washington, DC – Festivals & Regalia Project (TPE)

Through Piscataway Eyes (TPE), the 501c3 nonprofit that promotes and advances the people of the Piscataway Conoy tribe in the Chesapeake region, is seeking support in its development of the Festivals and Regalia Project. This program seeks to produce and distribute regalia and other traditional garments to members of the tribe who otherwise will not be able to participate fully in ceremonies, dances, and other time-honored festivities that serve as cultural bedrock beneath the current and future Piscataway Conoy generations. Events that require and celebrate traditional clothing include the Seed Gathering Festival each spring, the Feast of the Waters each summer, the Green Corn Festival each fall, and the Feast of the Dead come winter, but additional events are numerous throughout the year. These events are indispensable not only for the people of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe, but for the general public in Southern Maryland and for visiting tourists from throughout the world. By fostering a better understanding of the history and tradition of the Tribe through contemporary and tangible approaches, the program will bolster a sense of pride and belonging within the Tribe while strengthening the Tribe’s relationship with surrounding communities that are likewise interested in the unique Piscataway Conoy traditions. The Festivals and Regalia Project is part of the larger trajectory of TPE’s vision, which aims to support traditional craftspeople within the community, administer aid and assistance to unemployed and impoverished tribal members, and regain portions of ancestral lands for communal use.

Many of their participants who love these classes have tried multiple other sports and groups and haven't stuck with them because they don't feel comfortable in those environments. Their sessions are very inclusive which has allowed these kids to thrive. This year it has been very cold and they have found that some of our participants who love paddling and being out on the water can't afford to purchase the appropriate clothing to keep warm on the water in winter. This means that we can't let them on the water due to safety concerns. The Warmer On The Water project has helped solve this issue by buying clothing that participants can use free of charge that keeps them warm on the water in winter.

It will be installed in Yerevan Botanical Garden and will be shared them with the many people who walk by the garden every day. It is planned to be implemented within 2 to 3 months. Լove bench creates a light based on the resistance generated when two people hold hands. We think that love bench is awesome because it encourages playful interactions and collaborations naturally of people. And who knows? The bench could lead to inspiration of another kind. This bench can bring together even strangers, who will hold their hands and story of love or friendship will begin. We are hopeful in the future that others will take the concept and create the newest iteration of the love bench, giving people positive emotions.

Every child needs to know homeless or not; they are important. Parents whether they are single parents or their children should be supported. Our company, Kingdom Way Center, Inc, is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization that assists families with birthday parties for children 5-12 years old. We have 12 parties a year each calendar month. Each member sign-up their child on our website with pertinent information based on location, and At the end of each month, we have a big birthday party at the local park or school. For June 2022, we had 120 children with six birthdays that we celebrated. The children enjoyed fun, laughter and all the birthday festivities. We talked to them about the importance of staying in school, Reaching out if there is any immediate crisis We also assisted with food, backpack, and a crisis center to get further assist. We want to see our community thrive now and in the future as we start with the children of the future.

For the past 20 years the Greasypole Shrine has been a new Fiesta Tradition. Its started with Paul Nicastro and myself putting a few pictures up Felica Oil as the Greasypole walkers would have a small background when they clean up after walking the pole. This a labor of love and no money was ever asked or given from the St. Peter Committee. Paul and I paid it all out of pocket. Over the years it has grown from 15 pictures and now every Friday Champ picture, plus Saturday and Sunday Champ pictures into the 1940's Since now its on the Front side of the Shed at Felicia Oil, lots of people have now been stopping to take pictures and telling stories of friends and family of those who won. Now after each day when, the newly Greasy Pole Champ has been taking their pictures in front of the Shrine and having the all the pictures used a backdrop. People reach out to us every year and ask what new addition or Theme wall is going to be. After the Pandemic, I took upon myself to re-due print and laminate all the Champs pictures. I remade all the Champ Day and the Greasy Pole Shrine signs. With the signs I cut news boards, painted them and custom wood lasered lettering. We also took the tradition that we started in 2013 of giving the GreasyPole Champ a windbreaker jacket with the day they won. Friday champ get a White jacket, Saturday get a Red jacket and Sunday gets a Green jacket. The new champs feel proud to walk around with a jacket and knowing it comes from the Paul N I from the GreasyPole Shrine

Poughkeepsie, NY – Poughkeepsie Teen Closet

Our awesome project provides students in the Poughkeepsie City School District with the basic necessities of personal hygiene products so that every student in the city of Poughkeepsie can come to school feeling healthy and ready to learn. Teen Closet operates a full stocked closet at Poughkeepsie High School and a satellite closet at Poughkeepsie Middle School, while providing 2 bulk-deliveries of items to all district elementary schools in the fall and spring. With the COVID-19 pandemic, our hygiene supplies have dwindled as our need has increased. Many of our families have low-income jobs. The families tend to be large and simply stocking up the pantry can be an impossible financial hurdle, causing person hygiene and self care items to be deemed a luxury. Providing personal hygiene, is a small gesture of kindness that promotes self-dignity through cleanliness. The impact of Teen Closet includes providing 2,500 hygiene products, clothing items, and school supplies to students throughout the district in the 2021-2022 school year. In addition, Teen Closet creates back-to-school bags for each Poughkeepsie Middle and High School classroom, containing important hygiene items and also raising awareness of the organization's existence and accessibility. Teen Closet also hosts a Penny Social for seniors pursuing higher education in which shower caddies stocked with hygiene supplies and several large gift baskets are given to Poughkeepsie High School seniors. As the elementary schools do not have closets, Teen Closet provides requested hygiene items to the students twice per year; last year's contribution totaled $3,000 worth of hygiene items.

We recognize the dignity of us all, and, for this reason, we are dedicated to accompanying the formerly incarcerated on their journey back into society at large. We believe that integral to this journey is recognizing the systemic factors and histories of trauma that affect those we serve. In this method we call accompaniment, we focus on developing relationships with the larger community to build a more just and merciful society. As a mission of the Diocese of the Pensacola -Tallahassee Catholic Church, Joseph House helps to restore the dignity of those who are the most vulnerable to homelessness and re-offending by offering comprehensive services. Meeting men incarcerated and living in the brutal conditions of solitary confinement, we recognized many feared the notion of freedom rather than welcomed it because they had nowhere to go. We thought, one by one, we can make their lives better. We can make the world better. What we have discovered is many of these men make our community better when they can finally breathe the fresh air of peace and goodness. Our lives are better with them walking alongside us. Formerly incarcerated individuals are ten times more likely to experience homelessness than the general population. When someone is homeless, they are five times more likely to re-offend. Last year over 26,000 individuals left Florida’s prisons and jails. Statistics like this are why Joseph House exists. We aspire to change the narrative on reentry services by creating a community surrounding those reentering society. For the past four years the organization has created a vibrant and therapeutic community to walk alongside their residents as they begin to dream about their new lives. Providing holistic residential services for those who leave Florida’s prisons and are most at risk of experiencing homelessness and recidivism is one of our priorities.

The Awesome Ottawa award will help her buy a deep freezer, shelving, and tables. She is herself a tenant of the building.

Piqua, OH (Inativo) – Call to lost loved ones

In a recent episode of CBS Sunday Morning, Jane Pauley introduced a piece titled, "Making phone calls to the departed". Lee Cowan showed us a family who walked through the woods in Oregon to a wall phone attached to a tree and nothing else. The members of the family picked up the phone and made a "long distance" call to the four year old child they had lost to illness the previous year. The “whispers in the wind” call from that phone allowed the family to connect to their daughter and sister. As the family explained it, though it makes no logical sense to make a call from a phone connected to "nothing" it allowed them to pour out their hearts and feel connected. This phenomenon has spread throughout the world and has brought comfort to families from the Pacific Northwest, to Japan and Europe. Dan and I would like to bring this small piece of comfort and love to Piqua. After a preliminary discussion with the Awesome Piqua Trustees that resulted in the suggestion that we pursue the idea, we met with the members of the board of Forrest Hill Cemetery, Kyle Cooper, Cindy Pearson and Jeff Lange and their Superintendent, Jim Roth who wholeheartedly supported placing not one but three phones in the cemetery. PIQUA — Awesome Piqua, a chapter of the worldwide Awesome Foundation, Trustees approved a grant application for a “Phone of the Wind”, based on a segment shown on CBS Sunday Morning, about a phone hung on a tree in a forest in Oregon. People who had lost a loved one could come, “make a call” (even though the phone was not connected to anything) and say things they wish they had said or could still say to the lost person. This brings most people comfort and can help smooth the journey to closure over a loss. The people who wrote the grant application met with the Forest Hill Cemetery Trustees Cindy Pearson, Kyle Cooper, and Jeff Lange and staff on Feb. 2, 2022 to explain the idea. The Trustees had all seen the CBS segment and were very enthusiastic and welcoming of the idea – so much so, that they requested Awesome Piqua produce and donate three Phones of the Wind, rather than just the one. Using the $1,000 Awesome Piqua grant funds, the grant recipients found and purchased three “old style” rotary dial telephones. The Upper Valley Career Center Construction Technologies class constructed three “chalets” to house the phones. Quint Creative made the signage, which explains more about the purpose and use of the phones. The signage also has the feature of a QR code – a person can use their cell phone, take a photo or scan the QR code, and be directed to the Awesome Piqua website for more information. The Awesome Piqua Trustees met on July 22 with the Forest Hill Cemetery Trustees and new Superintendent, Logan Guillozet, to present the three chalets and Phones of the Wind to the cemetery. The cemetery staff plans to place and mount the Phones of the Wind at three locations in the cemetery in the near future. “How pleased Awesome Piqua Trustees are to bring this idea and these three Phones of the Wind chalets to our Piqua Forest Hill Cemetery. People, in other locations, who have used the Phone of the Wind to speak to loved ones who have departed, have found some solace and comfort from the process. We hope Piquads will have the same good experience. This is just the latest example of an Awesome Piqua grant application, which will surprise, delight, and benefit our community,” French said. “Thank you to ”Dean” Dan French, the Awesome Piqua Trustees, UVCC, and Quint Creative for helping to make this project a unique reality. This is the story of how a year ago, I changed the life of my 12-year-old teammate, how he changed mine, and how together we are going to change the lives of thousands more. I am Maxim Manyak, a Men’s Lacrosse Player at the University of Notre Dame and the Founder of Pediatric Pep Talk. This inspiration has since been reborn into an app-based platform that is in the business of connecting children’s hospitals, and the chronically ill patients and families they serve, with athletes across the country, allowing these patients to join a team no matter where they find themselves. Our mission is to change the lives of children with critical illnesses, their families, and their treatment teams, one smile at a time. This is Pediatric Pep Talk, where a smile a day keeps the doctor away. I am currently involved with 16 "teammates" from Beacon Children's Hospital, and am receiving videos from all 26 Varsity Teams and 800+ athletes from the University of Notre Dame. Sharing the ways in which New Yorkers are actively combating isolation is a perspective that’s been missing from documentation of the past few years. Freshman year is a challenging transition for many students. The goals of the Riley Roars at Potawatomi Zoo Project are: to increase student success in a freshman level course, Biology; increase classroom engagement; and build a sense of community within Riley High School. By using real world connections to help increase engagement, we give our students a stronger foundation for the Biology curriculum and content. This foundation also allows students to build critical thinking skills and helps them succeed early in a challenging course. We believe this will lead to increased success and enrollment in higher level science courses. The project also includes upper level science students, specifically AP science students, who have experienced success both inside and outside the classroom. These students will serve in a mentoring capacity at the zoo while Biology students are working to complete their research. The mentor students will have the opportunity to guide Biology students through aspects of the scientific process. They will also foster relationships with the underclassmen. We hope these relationships will increase student success across their four years of high school, improving attendance and graduation rates. Portions of this project have already been funded by generous grants from both the SB Education Foundation as well as the SB Alumni Foundation.

South Bend, IN – Day of the Dead Celebration Mural

Downtown South Bend is partnering with a coalition of arts organizations on a three-day celebration of Latinx culture focused around the Day of the Dead, a holiday which honors and celebrate the lives of loved ones that have passed away. The celebration includes musical performances, poetry, and special presentations at the Morris Performing Arts Center, La Casa de Amistad, and the Civil Rights Heritage Center. Building off the success of Mural Mania 2022 which added five new murals to our community, DTSB proposes adding a mural downtown designed by Latinx artist Federico Rodriguez as part of the Day of the Dead celebration. The mural would enhance the downtown through public art while recognizing the contributions of the Latinx community.

Hoje a comunidade de Suzana, em Brumadinho, possui um Centro Comunitário, onde se desenvolvem atualmente diversas atividades gratuitas, voltadas para a população local. Temos hoje acontecendo ali: atividades físicas para terceira idade, aulas de teatro para adolescentes, aulas de dança para adultos e crianças, oficinas de artes e reuniões para tratar de assuntos diversos, de interesse da comunidade. Precisamos melhorar o acesso do público ao salão e à cozinha comunitária. Hoje não existe um caminho acessível que ligue a edificação à via pública. O acesso é feito sobre chão batido, o que dificulta muito chegar ao local em dias de chuva. Pessoas com dificuldade de mobilidade também encontram extrema dificuldade para acessar o local. Em vista destas questões, estou propondo a construção de uma rampa de piso de concreto, com inclinação máxima de 8%, com 120cm de largura e aproximadamente 30ml de extensão, para fazer a ligação entre a pracinha onde existem brinquedos infantis, que já é pavimentada, até a edificação principal, onde se encontram o salão, cozinha e banheiros acessíveis.

Miami, FL – College Readiness Program

We are Ketab, a non-profit that provides free college application assistance to underserved students in Miami. This year, we are planning to lease a physical location, so students from nearby neighborhoods can come to after school. Our awesome project is to provide a safe space for students to learn and excel in their pursuit of higher education. We have computers, books, resources, and mentors who are willing to work with out students, but we are short on funding when it comes to acquiring the space. This funding would help us to secure a space for our students. In Miami, many of our students are under resourced and do not have the support they need as they apply to college. Our program provides this space for them to have free wifi, tools, and guidance on their college applications and personal statements. Moreover, this year, we are launching a College Readiness Program that is an eight week after school program to plan and execute college applications. Our students would be delighted to have the opportunity to partake in this course in person.

The stories, sprinkled with humor and pathos, enlightens and entertains the listeners as they follow the true life journeys from the 1940s to today of Jeannette Paulson Hereniko and friends. Now there are 22 recorded stories on the website. More to come. Not long ago women couldn't have a bank account or credit card without their husband’s written approval. Women were fired when they became pregnant, and most careers were limited to jobs that assisted the men on top. The personal stories on WILD WISDOM tell how women coped during these challenging times. The stories remind women to be vigilant so we do not go backward in our fight for equality. Because of the quickly changing landscape of American politics and law, the time to finish and distribute my WILD WISDOM podcast series is NOW! As an 82 year old woman, I feel a sense of urgency to pass on my stories. But first I must raise money to produce a sound track for each story before the podcast series can be distributed. Identificamos no município de Brumadinho um grande número de pessoas desassistidas e/ou acompanhamentos suspensos. A região de Brumadinho conta com uma numerosa população que vive em região rural, pessoas simples e de baixo poder aquisitivo. Essas pessoas vivem longe do centro da cidade e encontram dificuldades de deslocamento para realizarem as atividades das PICS (Práticas Integrativas à Saúde) propostas pelo município. Tivemos momento em que locais que atendiam as PICS fecharam as portas, gerando um buraco na saúde integrativa dessas pessoas. O IGAPH sempre prestou esse atendimento e acompanhamento para população de alta vulnerabilidade de forma presencial, mas nós também não podíamos virar as costas para essas pessoas e passamos a prestar esse serviço via whatsApp( vídeo+mensagem), foi o única forma que encontramos de não parar de atender a necessidade de cada indivíduo. Entretanto, tivemos dificuldades por não possuir ferramentas para dinamizar e armazenar esses dados. Nossa ideia é organizar esses atendimentos, armazena-los e criar conteúdos nas redes sociais para simplificar o entendimento de todos e também desenvolver ações de caráter beneficente assistencial e cultural, visando métodos alternativos naturais, beneficiando a saúde do indivíduo na sua integralidade, melhorando a qualidade de vida por meio de prevenção, promoção e proteção à saúde.

Homegrown in Glasgow, Scotland, Bees Productions is a newly founded scaling agency that seeks to create curated experiences for community, clients, and partner relationships to help transform the experiential landscape and creative footprint within the Black communities in Scotland. Through our various backgrounds and experiences, we aim to provide authentic, creative solutions to help enhance creative visions for the disadvantaged, and address the lack of diversity, and social inequality in Scotland. Our compact autonomy, and first-hand experience with racial discrimination, and inequality not only make us the perfect team to carry out these activities, but also put us in a strong position within the Black community, and we take that seriously. Proudly Black and Scottish is a research and development project that has been curated with the aim of generating activities that fill the cultural gap in the entertainment/creative sector, particularly for the Afro-Caribbean diaspora community in Scotland. This will be achieved by providing specific opportunities for black creative individuals through medium-scale events including upskilling prospects with the project team, showcasing potentials as part of the events line up, “fringe” presentations, creative pop-ups, awards/networking gala, music concert, and action/creative planning sessions as part of the events. This will be achieved by engaging in ongoing contact with the black community supported by a permanent online platform providing a digital safe space for networking, workshops, forums, and project development.

Brumadinho (Inativo) – Telhas para casa de pau a pique

Desde que chegamos no povoado de Melo Franco em Brumadinho no dia 20 de fevereiro desse ano, nós da etnia Xucuru Kariri aldeia aldeia Arapowã kakyá temos vivido em barracas improvisadas, cobertas com plástico preto, usado em obras. ( Ver as fotos) Já tivemos roupas e colchões molhados pelas chuvas e com a chegada do frio, muito vento e muito frio úmido, causando muitas doenças em nossas crianças, algumas com problemas respiratórios. Somos 14 mulheres, 16 homens e 23 crianças, de 1 aos 14 anos. Há um mes começamos a construir algumas casas de pau a pique ( ver fotos) com o eucalipto seco que se encontrava na fazenda, barro e o material que foi doado, mas que não é suficiente. Estamos em processo de retomada e, apesar de trabalharmos muito, nossa situação financeira é muito precária e não temos como colocar forro nas casas. A idéia é de usarmos telhas ecológicas foi porque elas não necessitam de madeira para sustentá-las.

Chicago, IL – South/West Side Community Jams

Frederick and Anna Douglass Park was recently renamed from Stephen A Douglas Park. The petition and eventual successful name change was due to the efforts of a group of teens from Austin. The name change was only the beginning in rectifying the harm done in honoring a man who kept people in bondage slavery with a plot of land in a Black neighborhood. We want to honor our young people’s efforts and continue the healing process by establishing another tradition of cultural celebration in Douglass Park: monthly community dance & music jams, also known as cyphers. The cypher, or improvisation circle, is a tradition that has roots in a great many BIPOC-based artistic disciplines. We hope this will help fill our community’s need for further place-based connection to history, and build solidarity across racial and ethnic divides. The backbone of these community jams is the multidisciplinary collaboration between tap dancers and jazz musicians. However, the jams will not simply be limited to these two disciplines. From trading fours to the roda to the ring shout, a version of the cypher is fundamental to any African Diaspora-based dance or music discipline, and many Indigenous dance and music traditions as well. However, in tap dance the cypher’s original purpose was as a mechanism of nonviolent conflict resolution between young dancers, and that is the reason for our emphasis on tap as one of the primary artistic disciplines involved in this event series.

Cass Clay – Pencils Plus: Richland-Wilkin School Supply Drive

In 2021 Three Rivers Crisis Center took over the Richland-Wilkin School Supply Program due to the United Way dissolving in our community. This is out of our scope of services, but we know that there are so many families in our community who rely on this program for school supplies and backpacks. We provide 600 backpacks filled with supplies for kids in Richland County, ND and Wilkin County, MN. This covers children from 9 school districts. Three Rivers Crisis Center is a small non-profit. The funding Three Rivers Crisis Center receives from state and federal grants are specifically to be used for domestic violence, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse. Because of these funding restrictions, the school supply program can only be funded by private grants and donations. This has turned in to such a large project that we are hoping to eventually turn it in to it's own non-profit entity so it can continue to grow. I've included the list of items and the quantity to show the amounts of supplies needed every year. Newmarket – Backpacks for youth in Newmarket

We are working on 4th annual Back to school drive that provides over 300 new backpacks each September with new school supplies. These are much needed this year due to numerous requests from region's shelters and youth in the community. Covid-19 has put a lot of financial strains on families declining mental health and increased stress. Youth and children need to go back to school in September with dignity, confidence and respect carrying new backpacks and school supplies. We have over 150 families requests with inability to purchase these items this summer. Many children and youth that are homeless or at risk cannot afford to get new items. Every summer we run fundraisers to collect donations and buy new school backpacks and quality school supplies. This summer fundraisers have been a challenge due to increase in covid-19 cases and overall community donations have reduced due to financial hardships everyone is facing. We are in urgent needs of funds to carry on this project in the next 3 weeks. It will be much appreciated if this request is considered and funds are granted. Our volunteers are ready to start the project and prepare these for distribution in end of August.

Pittsburgh, PA – HAP Hive

Throughout the Pittsburgh region, you can find community gardens that serve as social, food, and educational hubs. Pollinators keep these spaces buzzing, literally and figuratively. However, not every area in Pittsburgh has the resources to create a green space or pollinator garden. Based on similar and effective programs around the globe, Humane Action Pittsburgh’s HAP Hive aims to combat the ever-declining bee population through a three pronged approach: 1.) Work with the City of Pittsburgh to eliminate the use of chemical pesticides 2.) Replace ornamental flowers with native plants where possible 3.) Install “bee hotels” to encourage settlement and increase the bee population throughout Western PA where natural habitats have been destroyed. HAP Hive was created out of concern for bees and other pollinator species. Their numbers have continued to decline dramatically the past few years. They play a vital role in our ecosystem by helping plants survive and prosper. This directly impacts our food systems as plants produce one-third of our food supply, one-half of the world’s oils and fibers, and other raw materials. Humane Action Pittsburgh (HAP) plans to partner with Swissvale, a borough in Allegheny County, to build a green space in a vacant lot. Part of that green space, a pollinator garden, will include native plants and food sources for pollinators, a food forest–which is the planting of edible plants to copy ecosystems and patterns found in nature–a clover lawn and outdoor lighting. The space would offer educational opportunities to host classes or community events. After this green space is installed in Swissvale, HAP plans to expand this initiative throughout Allegheny County.

On the Water – Windward Exhibition

Wanting to combine the art and outdoor communities of Portland, I organized a call for art to paint on old sails for their J22s. Artists are given sails, some are provided with space to paint them if needed, and everyone receives a stipend for being involved with the project. The sails are visible around Casco Bay for the entire month of August.

Brumadinho (Inativo) – Cartografia Social e Ecologia de Saberes

O presente projeto trata-se de uma parceria entre a PUC Minas e a comunidade quilombola de Ribeirão em Brumadinho, Minas Gerais. Desde o mês de abril de 2021, vem sendo desenvolvido na comunidade quilombola uma atividade denominada "Cartografia Social" que consiste na produção de mapas pelas comunidade, onde os próprios moradores do quilombo possui autonomia para representar e delinear a demarcação de suas terras, bem como, colocar em evidência as demandas existentes nesta localidade. Almeida (2011) estabelece que a cartografia social é um instrumento que possibilita a emancipação das comunidades em seus respectivos espaços no processo de representação do seu espaço vivido, no compartilhamento de saberes, histórias, na reivindicação de demandas, e como mecanismo de gestão do território. A comunidade quilombola de Ribeirão foi originada a partir do aquilombamento dos negros escravizados que fugiram da fazenda dos Martins, e foram se organizando em terrenos próximos a fazendo para estabelecer seus modos de vida. Inicialmente o primeiro nome da comunidade era “Quilombo Ponte Pedra”. Sabe-se que o território é um elemento fundamental para manutenção dos modos de vida e existência dessas comunidade, por isso a cartografia social se apresenta como uma ferramenta importante para esses povos, uma vez que, por meio dos mapas construidos pela comunidade, os quilombolas consegue reivindicar a posse de terras e também dar visibilidade a todas as riquezas, e saberes culturais desse lugar. Assim, a proposta do presente projeto é levar os quilombolas do Ribeirão para dentro dos espaços da Universidade (PUC MG) para que a comunidade acadêmica tenha a oportunidade de aprender os saberes tradicionais existente fora dos muros da universidade, entendendo que o saber cientifico não é a única forma de conhecimento existente, e que os saberes ancestrais e territoriais (expostos por meio da Cartografia Social) desses grupos, tem muito o que contribuir para a produção do conhecimento. St. Paul, MN – Shoes & safety gear

Congratulations to our August 2022 grantee! We chose this project for its work with young athletes in our community. The grant will help them purchase safety gear such as helmets as well as support fees and other necessary expenditures. In the coaches own words, "East Side Wrestling Club was started as a non-profit here in MN in 2011. We focus on offering a high-quality wrestling experience to local kids (focused on St Paul, Minneapolis, and the surrounding suburbs) regardless of financial ability to participate. Our fees are typically about 10-20% of a typical club, and we waive/reduce fees for anyone who requests. This past season had about 40% of our families paying dues. We are 100% volunteer-run, so 100% of our proceeds go back to supporting our community. Over this past year we have helped fund some local wrestlers to attend national tournaments, we have funded numerous USA Wrestling memberships & tournament entry fees, and we have financially partnered with St Paul Johnson High School for a full upgrade of their wrestling room space."
