Tilburg (Inativo) – Laat me je Tilburg zien

Soms worden dingen zoveel mooier als je er met frisse ogen naar kijkt. Sinds begin december 2015 hebben circa 900 vluchtelingen (tijdelijk) opvang gevonden in twee nieuwe asielzoekerscentra in Tilburg. Hier zullen zij de komende jaren wachten op een status, een permanente opvang of terugkeer naar het land van herkomst. In de tussentijd ontstaan er veel initiatieven om deze mensen te bij het integreren in de samenleving. Maar er blijft ook onbegrip bestaan, aangesterkt door verhalen uit de media en door geluiden van protest. We zijn wantrouwig tegenover ‘de ander’ omdat we niet weten wat diegene drijft. De kloof tussen ‘ons’ en ‘de ander’ lijkt ondichtbaar. Maar moeten we wel denken in oppositionele termen? Er is namelijk iets dat ons verbindt: Tilburg. We zijn allemaal hier. Laat me je Tilburg zien heeft als inzet om nieuwe perspectieven op Tilburg te delen in een groeiende (online) fotocollectie. Deze collectie wordt gevormd door foto’s die gemaakt zijn door nieuwe Tilburgers in AZC’s. Om dit te bereiken worden (minimaal) 400 wegwerpcamera’s verspreid in de opvangcentra. Bewoners worden hierin gevraagd om hun perspectief op de stad te laten zien. Hoe zie jij Tilburg? Wat valt je op aan deze stad? Wat vind je bijzonder of verrassend? Mensen moet je nooit onderschatten. Belangrijk aan dit project is dat we het vluchtelingengesprek niet aanpakken door over deze mensen te gaan praten, of om vanuit ons eigen perspectief deze mensen in beeld te brengen. We gaan de mensen zelf aan het woord laten. Dat kunnen ze namelijk beter dan wij. De foto’s worden verzameld op een website www.laatmejetilburgzien.nl, waar ook een kort statement van iedere inzender aan het beeld wordt gekoppeld. Naast de website wordt een selectie van de inzendingen gebruikt als basis voor een reizende tentoonstelling, een samenwerkingsverband tussen de Bibliotheek Midden-Brabant en Stichting Nieuwkomers en Vluchtelingenwerk. Andere mogelijke samenwerkingspartners zijn Quiet 500 en Gemeente Tilburg.

hi my name is Taylor Sinett I am a 16 year old sophomore at Schreiber and I am a children's book author and illustrator. My second book just came out called Jack on a Plaque. Jack on a Plaque is the story of a young yak named Jack, who learns to overcome the limitations of his physical disability with a positive attitude. During athletic competitions at school, Jack’s small hoof always slows him down and prevents him from winning. But Jack remains determined, and even though he is never able to be the fastest or the strongest, he is consistently the hardest working. He earns the Leader of the Yak Pack title for his perseverance. I am setting up a day of literary awesomeness at Manorhaven School where I will be reading Jack on a Plaque to the entire kindergarten group approximately 87 students. Both Bonnie Cohen the principal and my own teacher Mrs Meltzer are excited to have me. I am asking for the Awesome committee to donate $1,000 to purchase 100 books, one for each student (the remainder books will be donated to the library as well as some other classes.) I will be able to read this inspiring story to the kids, hopefully motivate them about writing and art as well as show them what is possible. I will also personally sign each and every book to encourage them to follow their dreams like I am. Ann Arbor, MI – Foster care survival packages

In this project, my group and I are donating to a foster care center and giving them survival packages. Survival Packages are like goody bags that include clothes, bracelets, lip balm, fun lip gloss, trendy t-shirts, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion, duffle or 31 bags, deodorant, earbuds, and maybe even some more stuff. We feel that they need survival packets because everyone has tough time and they are going through a really tough time in their life transitioning to a family. We think that on there journey that they could use something to have always knowing that someone is there for them. We are also thinking about doing some activities all together on certain days with them if the organization will allow it. We are coming up with really nice things to put in the packages as well.

This Tuesday, the US Senate introduced Rise's bill - a Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act that protects the civil rights of 25 million survivors across the nation. America leads the world in protecting citizens' rights to liberty and equality, yet our country currently lacks baseline procedures for rape survivors depriving millions of Americans basic liberties. Americans urgently need a comprehensive rights that standardizes the best practices drawing on innovation we've seen implemented across the country. The Sexual Assault Survivors’ Rights Act draws from legal rights that already exist in patchwork form in different states across the county. It requires steps to ensure that people who have been sexually assaulted have access to a trained sexual assault counselor and comprehensive information about victims’ legal options. For individuals who submit to a rape kit, the bill would give them the right to know the location of the evidence, whether the kit has been tested, and the test results. The bill guarantees these rights whether or not the person reports the crime to law enforcement or agrees to press charges. It also creates a task force to examine how well the changes are implemented, to include representatives from diverse communities and advocacy backgrounds. San Francisco, CA – NOTAFLOF Collective

We are a collective of queer and trans* hair stylists, bodyworkers, artists, activists and community members renting a storefront space on San Pablo Avenue in North Oakland in order to provide by donation services to the queer, trans*, QTPOC and allied community of the East Bay. We're called NOTAFLOF, no one turned away for lack of funds, because removing barriers to accessibility and offering affordable services and community events are the most important aspects of our mission. Our co-founders, Dara and Liam, began offering Pay-What-You-Can haircuts and bodywork to the queer and trans* community of the East Bay five months ago. The overwhelming interest and desire for these types of services quickly became apparent, and coincided with finding a suitable space to offer them in North Oakland. Within a week of fundraising and organizing, the group ballooned into a well-defined, diverse community with a clear vision of becoming a sober, queer, child and family-oriented space offering haircuts, healing services, peer counseling, groups, events, workshops, meeting space, a zine library, art and music shows, community meals, gardening, book and clothing swaps, childcare, skill shares and more. Our aim is to provide an alternative to mainstream spaces, where trans and gender non-conforming people have often experienced tremendous hardship related to access and even trauma, by offering a safe space for self-definition. By highlighting the gap between the experiences of trans* people when compared to the rest of the population in terms of their access to stable housing, employment and health care, we hope to educate people who might not otherwise be aware of the needs of trans people in our society. We see hair services as a political intersection of race, class and gender identity. Our work aims to offset the very real and current economic struggles of marginalized communities, to allow for greater autonomy of self expression, well-being and economic freedom. This grant would be used to offset the costs of rent and the overhead of running the space as well as contributing toward paying folks who work in the space a living wage. Since all of the collective's income is sliding scale/NOTAFLOF we want to guarantee that those who provide these much-needed services are compensated for their time as no one who works with us is in the economic position to do this work on a solely volunteer basis.

Alaska (Inativo) – Haines Harvest

Project Haines Harvest is our farm's attempt to increase the quantity and quality of locally grown produce for the communities of Haines and Klukwan. Four Winds Farm is currently the only operating vegetable farm selling fresh produce to the general public in the area. In the past three years we have observed rapidly growing interest in fresh produce and healthy eating in our community. We currently grow 40 different fruit and vegetable crops using organic methods. Four Winds Farm is registered with the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program and the Women Infants and Children Nutritional Programs in Alaska. Strong local participation in these programs in 2015 led to a surge in demand for our produce at the weekly Haines Farmers Market, outstripping our supply. The farm has sufficient garden space to grow considerably more produce in 2016 but currently lacks cold storage. Without proper cold storage most crops must be harvested the morning of the market to ensure quality. This project will build cold storage on the farm, effectively lengthening the harvest period preceding the market. With the ability to store crops for a longer harvest period (2-3 days) we will eliminate the bottleneck and be able to effectively harvest larger amounts for the market. Without cold storage we can't expand our harvest. The cold storage will be an insulated room of 6' by 8' built onto the north side of the farm's existing produce processing building. The thermal mass of the existing building will block heat gain from the sun. Cooling will be provided by a CoolBot refrigeration system. CoolBots were invented by a farmer as an alternative to conventional walk-in coolerfor small-scale applications. They can be built for less than the cost of purchasing a walk-in cooler and use less energy. The CoolBot consists of a readily available window air conditioner coupled with a custom controller enabling a small room to achieve refrigerator temperatures, 35-40 degrees F.

Atlanta, GA (Inativo) – "Flying Change" Equine Therapy for Youth

Flying Change Equine Therapy is an Atlanta-based program that partners rescued and retired horses in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy for youth healing from emotional and behavioral challenges like depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders and trauma from childhood abuse or domestic violence. Our purpose is to help vulnerable youth build confidence, self esteem, develop relationship-building skills, learn how to communicate effectively, experience teamwork/cooperation, gain leadership skills, and develop empathy and respect for themselves and others. Our organization has seen as many as 50 clients and their families a week and has offered hope and healing to everyone who arrives on our doorstep. We have never turned away a client we believed we could help because they could not afford our services.

Elle peut se déplacer partout hors des circuits habituels d'exposition: dans l’espace public, dans des écoles, des centres sociaux, des hôpitaux... pour aller à la rencontre de tous les publics et valoriser le travail de jeunes artistes. A cette médiation matérielle s’ajoute celle de l’artiste et de l’équipe mobilisée afin de provoquer la rencontre. KickArt is a trailer that has been remodeled into an art galery to encourage people who have little access to culture to discover contemporary art. It is an original dissemination tool that allows to stage art in a different way. The trailer car travel everywhere, and especially outside of traditional exhibition settings : public spaces, schools, community centers, hospitals… in order to meet all types of audiences and to highligt the work of young artists. The artists and the team also organize workshop to deepen the relationship between the audience and the artworks.

Washington, DC – District Displaced

Founded in November 2014, District Displaced is a photography outreach project that reveals there is more to being homeless than simply not having a home. Through ongoing outreach work, District Displaced focuses on providing resources to individuals dealing with homelessness in Washington, D.C. The outreach goal is to make sure that each engaged individual has the opportunity to receive resources that will tangibly benefit them. District Displaced offers a unique opportunity to individuals currently dealing with homelessness to document and share their experiences through film photography by becoming project contributors. District Displaced contributors use film photography to provide unique perspectives on living without a home. With each roll of film contributors have the opportunity to review each photo after they are developed, and title the photographs that they want to share online and in exhibitions. Despite the obvious hardships relating to homelessness, each photograph offers a first hand account of life on the streets of Washington, D.C. and fosters a sense of resilience and ingenuity. By collaborating with those dealing with homelessness in DC a new voice is assumed by each contributor to self-advocate through art.

Moscow (Inativo) – Фестиваль молодых экскурсоводов

В апреле 2015 года в Самаре прошёл фестиваль молодых экскурсоводов, где учащиеся старших классов и студенты бесплатно проводили экскурсии для гостей и жителей города. Молодых людей в течение 3 месяцев готовили профессиональные экскурсоводы и руководители турфирм. За это время были подготовлены разнообразные экскурсии: - "Невидимый город" (тактильно-ароматная экскурсия для слепых); - "Крылья Победы" (история Самары в годы ВОВ); - "Самара купеческая" (интерактивная экскурсия с песнями, играми, угощениями); - Экскурсия для детей с особыми потребностями" (иппотерапия, прогулка по парку) и многие другие. Всего было показано 8 экскурсий. Жители и гости города с большим удовольствием посетили их все. Некоторые из слушателей захотели стать экскурсоводами и принять участие в следующем фестивале. В 2016 году также планируется проведение фестиваля молодых экскурсоводов. Тема фестиваля "Быль и небыль о Самаре". В следующем году планируется расширить формат и темы экскурсий. Например: - экскурсия по граффити Самары; - экскурсия для любителей английского; - фотоэкскурсия; - экскурсия-квэст и др. Подобная идея получила своё развитие в Минске, где за 5 лет фестиваль экскурсоводов вырос до 120 экскурсий в день.

Вещеворот - это социальный проект, в рамках которого мы устанавливаем в г.Челябинск контейнеры для сбора ненужной одежды от населения, сортируем её, хорошую отдаем на благотворительность, плохую отправляем в переработку. Таким образом сокращая объем текстиля на свалке примерно на 5т в месяц и обеспечивая элементарной одеждой более 200 человек в месяц. Кроме того, проект предусматривает вовлечение граждан в добровольческую деятельность.

Наш проект – это ярмарки товаров ручной работы в подмосковном городе Серпухов. За 2015 год своими силами организовали 6 ярмарок разного масштаба – все с бесплатным участием для мастеров. Мы выбрали несколько торговых центров в городе, договорились о бесплатной аренде места проведения ярмарок, бартерной рекламе в местных СМИ. Своими силами подготавливаем афиши и флаеры. Цели проекта: - проведение ярмарок на бесплатной основе для участников; - развитие ярмарочных традиций; - повышение интереса к ручному труду. Наши ярмарки – это не просто продажа handmade-товаров, а своего рода небольшие арт-фестивали. Почему небольшие? Участие принимает около 40 мастеров и местные художники. Посещаемость ярмарок – до 700 гостей. Одна из главных задач – увеличение масштаба мероприятий, ведь это интересно многим и очень востребовано и у мастеров, и у посетителей. Мы хотим, чтобы такие ярмарки стали семейной традицией для жителей нашего региона. Somos um negócio social que busca criar situações de comércio justo (fair trade), aumentando a renda de cozinheiros que produzem em casa ou em pequenas cozinhas, trazendo à mesa das pessoas produtos de qualidade, não industrializados e a preços justos. Através da plataforma, cozinheiros podem se cadastrar e vender seus produtos com ajuda da nossa equipe. A Tá Pronto! atua, de forma secundária, na profissionalização dos seus cozinheiros, apoio no atendimento às demandas da vigilância sanitária e na realização das entregas destes produtos através de sua plataforma. Queremos facilitar o acesso dos cozinheiros a novos mercados e a serviços muitas vezes indisponíveis a pequenos vendedores, como pagamento digital e entregas em casa. Nossas entrevistas com cozinheiros que vendem de casa mostraram que eles compartilham uma dor: a quase totalidade vende apenas no boca a boca, para amigos e parentes, enquanto buscam nas redes sociais uma forma de aumentar o alcance de seus produtos, muitas vezes sem sucesso. De forma secundária, também apontaram para fragilidade dos serviços que ofertam, não conseguindo realizar entregas (ou tendo que realizá-las por conta própria), sem acesso a pagamento digital seguro (o que deixa algumas encomendas "encalhadas", já que o comprador nunca as busca) e sem capacidade de se planejar financeiramente pela falta de know how em business. Desta forma, nossas principais atividades são de Inbound Marketing, em uma atuação similar a iFoods e outros aplicativos similares, buscando aumentar as vendas dos nossos parceiros, enquanto buscamos terceirizar uma gama de serviços como entrega (feito por uma terceirizada, shippify, sem custos ao negócio e integrada na plataforma), pagamento digital e repasse direto aos cozinheiros e suporte em business feito através do nosso blog como estratégia de marketing de conteúdo. OneWave is all it takes... To free the funk. To give you hope. OneWave holds weekly Fluro Friday sunrise sessions up and down the coast to raise awareness for mental health. Newcastle has recently got on board and it's loca lchapter has been growing since late October 2015. We have weekly events where we dress up in the brightest outfits possible and surf/swim/do yoga. Fluro makes people smile and it gets people asking important questions, which are normally avoided about mental health. Everyone is welcome and it is a free event. Fluro Fridays have been started by everyday people in the community, and we all take on board the responsibility of runnig the session and turning up to be there to support one another. We would LOVE to see the stigma reduced in our local community, and are working hard to create a community where people feel safe, valued and appreciated. A community where the tpoic of mental health is at the fore front and not the elephant in the room. A community which is here to support each other in the best way we know how- saltwater therapy!

We are a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization Our mission is to promote proper nutritional habits and exercise to children by disguising educational and physical activities in a carnival environment. Objectives: To promote physical activity in a fun and safe environment To educate parents on proper exercise and nutrition for their children To promote lifelong activity and a healthy approach to preventing childhood obesity The majority of our participants come from low-income, single-parent homes where the parent is looking for work or working odd jobs to support the family. Participants from these environments typically are not involved in extracurricular activities because of limited finances. Carnival Full of Fitness® believes the Kids’ P.E. Club will not only be a safe haven for children, but will also be an opportunity for residents who are looking for a way to make a difference in the community. Carnival Full of Fitness® prides itself on its ability to think outside of the competitive playing field. We understand that most of the children we serve do not necessarily have the speed, strength, and agility to participate in traditional sports such as football, basketball, and baseball. The premise of our club is to encourage children to turn off their video games, computers, and smartphones and go outside to engage in “good, old-fashioned fun.” The club’s variety of games and activities contributes to positive development by infusing social skills, self-esteem, and cognitive skills. The session cycle will be 6 consecutive Saturdays, and the sessions will last approximately 4 hours. Given this, we are extending an invitation for local businesses to be donors and regular contributors to our project. The funds raised will be used to help register up to 40 deserving participants and employ residents of the Miami Gardens community. These funds will be used as a springboard, and we expect the program to be able to support itself after we gain exposure.

Did you know we learn a lot when we play? Play is natural, play is educational, play is fun! We all learn in different ways and to keep up in today’s rapidly-changing and connected world, we believe play will help us adapt. One way to do this is to connect students’ passions with real-world experience in order to foster exploration of interests inside and outside of the classroom. We are launching a summer of learning that will utilize existing educational programing across our community partnerships and create linkages that encourage and challenge young people to step outside their comfort zone and explore new activities. So many great learning assets exist in our community such as the Orlando Science Center, Melrose Center at the OCLS Downtown Library, and the maker-studio Factur where you can learn how to sew, stargazing, how to 3D print, woodworking, and flight simulation. An awesome grant will directly finance the kick-off event to promote our summer program to community education stakeholders by demonstrating these ideas of playground learning. On March 23, we will gather 30 education stakeholders and embark on a journey to move through our city, learning how to fly a drone. The event begins at the Melrose Center, where we get hands-on experience flying mini drones. We will then board the Lymmo downtown and arrive at the classroom in Lynx Central station where we will participate in a lecture on the legality of flying drones from an attorney who practices drone law. Next we will SunRail to Mad Cow Theatre to engage in performance activities to investigate the moral and ethical implications of drones in our society today. Finally we will Juice bicycle to the Dr Phillips Center where we will fly full-size drones with assistance of professional pilots and capture high definition video/photo footage to be used in future summer of learning activities. Stockholm (Inativo) – Folkparken – the people’s park!

To buy or rent land in Stockholm is very expensive, which makes Stockholm quite inaccessible for groups without strong financial resources. At the same time there’s one type of land that’s valuable and heavily subsidized for those who have a car - parking lots. For just 15kr/hr you can put something as big and expensive as a car in central parts of the city. Cheap rent for something that doesn’t add much to making the city an awesome place. Is that such good idea? Now what if you could transform these parking bays into something amazing, something awesome? Instead of cars we will park trailers on bays, trailers that will have a whole heap of different things on them for people to enjoy. Imagine parks, planter boxes, jacuzzis, outdoor cinemas, you name it. The inspiration will flourish and transform a Stockholm street for an entire week!

Until being exposed to my small school with a big heart I had a new outlook on my job and purpose. Being in a school where there are higher needs in social and emotional and providing a safe environment is extreme,y important. Unfortunately being a school with under 100 students it is hard to create extra curricular programs. Students have approached my in starting more activities at school and hands on learning such as Lego. Being able to incorporate the tools within the classroom it could also provide an opportunity many of the students would not have outside of he school.

For the past 7 years EVAC has been a hub for art, music, creative ideas, and community support in Old East Village. This past fall we made a move from 757 Dundas to 755 Dundas; a space 4 times the size of our previous home where we will be able to provide more programming, more art, bigger shows, and further develop our dynamic relationship with the East Village Community. Throughout the years we have been home to many artists and activists, and in this new space we hope to expand that family. While at 757 we were able to run as a community, bringing together what we had in order to create what we wanted. Now that we are changing location, we are also going to change our designation, and turn into a Not-for-profit. This status and this larger space we can provide a venue for local musicians to develop their sound and be heard above ground in London, ON; emerging artists will have room to work on their craft and walls to display their work; we will be able to provide seminars and classes in addition to the Anarchist Free School who provides weekly discussions at EVAC; we will further develop our community support initiatives like Safe Space, a drop-in centre for women on Monday and Tuesday’s, or the community meals provided for by Food Not Bombs. We have a lot of fundraising to do in order to get EVAC in a position to be the best possible venue for creativity and community to flourish in the OEV.

My awesome project is a new artwork bringing some loving attention to cracks, margins, connections, and repairs! "Sidewalk Kintsukuroi" expands on the traditional Japanese art of Kintsukuroi (meaning “to repair with gold;” traditionally performed on ceramics) taking it, literally, out into the streets. At the heart of the idea of such “golden repair” is that something is made more beautiful for having been broken - a deeply poetic take on healing and celebrating the beauty in our flaws. My aim is to create something beautiful that connects with the nature of change in the natural and human-structured world, and also resonates with personal repair we all undertake on ourselves from time to time. My first site-specific installation of Sidewalk Kintsukuroi will be created at MASS MoCA this spring as part of a new exhibition entitled "The Space Between" (See the exhibition page for more details: http://www.massmoca.org/event_details.php?id=1051) I'll be "repairing" the cracks in the outdoor museum courtyard with various resins and gold pigments for the exhibition opening April 16, 2016.

The project will consist of teachers and students at New Vista high School on Baseline Rd. in Boulder, working together, to convert the current music room into an audio engineering and recording studio. The New Vista Music Studio. We would like to expand the current music course offerings at the school, which focus mostly on performance. The newly added engineering studio would incorporate both audio sciences and technical aspects of music production for those students that perform as well as for those students that are motivated by music but not performers. The newly constructed New Vista Music Studio will not only be used for audio recording but will be used as a media production inter-space, to correlate with the expanding video production studio at the school. The New Vista Music Studio will be a fully functioning audio engineering studio on par with college level productions. The projected course offerings will be pre-college preparation right into one college level course. The New Vista Music Studio will prepare students for college level Audio Engineering programs. Eventually, the studio could be presented to the community as a student volunteered production company, or on a paid per project basis for school fundraising.

Project Postcard is a new, inclusive community art program for middle and high school students to participate in a mail art exhibition. The project is closely aligned with Visual Art Exchange’s mission to encourage new ideas, collaboration and experimental mediums and an extension of its innovative educational programs for young artists. In today’s culture we so rarely mail things. This project will encourage students to think about the ways in which we communicate our creative ideas as well as see how artists can work together to create a large scale installation with a variety of styles, voices and messages. To ensure every student can participate, any teacher, student or parent can request a package of postcards through an easy, online form. VAE will then send out a package of postcards and stamps. The students will then use the postcards as a base for their creative ideas, staying within mailing guidelines and mail the postcards back for display in storefront windows of arts venues in Downtown Raleigh during First Friday May 6. A secondary goal of the project is to help students and their families experience the energy of First Friday and downtown Raleigh’s creative scene! It is an inspiring way to see all the people who support the arts and explore the many venues dedicated to exhibiting art in Raleigh. To make sure everyone experiences the big picture of the event, we have designed the project to be exhibited in different venues that are easily walkable, but will direct people to more than one gallery. VAE expects to receive and display at least 700 of those cards and has secured three venues in the Warehouse District. VAE staff will create maps that will allow participants to navigate First Friday, find their artwork, and enjoy multiple venues and additional exhibitions. The postcards will be on view downtown for one weekend and VAE is working on other venues to display the project in the future as a more permanent installation.

This year is the first annual Juvenis festival presented by Blue Canoe Productions and I have been selected to direct and choreograph a dance show! The title of the performance, being shown at The Baby Grand Theater in May, is 'INITIALLY/UNCONDITIONALLY'. The work will be exploring relationships between strangers, friends and lovers, with an upbeat prologue indulging in the joy of laughter as medicine. 'INITIALLY/UNCONDITIONALLY' will start its adventure with auditions in the beginning of March with the aim of finding local movement artists to participate in the production. Along with the dancers I have recruited a local composer, musician and a young emerging photographer. This is an original choreography and collaboration filled with Kingstons finest, and although we have many great partners involved they simply cannot give us everything for free. So, I am looking elsewhere to find an awesome contribution to cover all costs, and make this show happen! Since this is the first professional contemporary dance show conceived in Kingston I am very hopeful to see it evolve into an experimental world of dance, voice, visual media, and local accompaniment.

A live blues music performance with free blues for kids education workshops. This is a free event, open to the public, and outdoors at Merriam Park in St Paul, MN. The harmonicas are donated by a local non profit, The MN Blues Society, The event will promote a dying music genre, which is blues music. It will be a fun, family friendly event, with free music education classes, live music and outdoors at a public park. I am collaborating with the MN Blues Society www.mnbs.org a small, local non profit that offers free harmonicas for blues for kids harmonica classes. I am the volunteer chairman of the blues for kids education committee at the MN Blues Society. The event will be collaborating with the St Paul Parks and Rec Department at Merriam Park with my contact, named Patti Schwartz. This event is free and open to the public. She hired our band to play at their park once in the past during a public event and I offered a similar free blues for kids harmonica class. It was a great success. I would like to create a similar project with more live music and more blues for kids workshops, promoting the blues music genre. This will build awareness to blues music, engage the community, and offer free blues education and harmonicas for kids, 1:00 to 2:30pm Group Music Lessons- Kids and parents can casually walk around to each station and spend time learning blues in four different areas. We will have four separate groups teaching music lessons in the following: Harmonica Lessons- New, free, harmonicas will be donated by the MNBS Guitar Lessons- I will donate 3 guitars that students can try out during lessons Vocal lessons and blues history- Blues/Swing Dance Lessons- 2:30pm to 3:30pm open blues jam- intermediate/advanced musicians of all ages can join the house band and perform 2 songs each with 3:30-5:00pm Professional blues band performance. The crowd can enjoy the music, play their instruments, dance, and now have a better understanding of the blues.

The Gloucester Sea Cadets of the Ouellet Division is the North Shore's contingent of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC). It is a non-profit youth program for Americans ages 11-18. They train at the U.S. Coast Guard Station based at Harbor Loop. They meet twice a month, on average, with addition Recruit Trainings (like basic training for new recruits) and Advanced Trainings throughout the year for specialized courses in medical, SCUBA, seamanship, aviation, and construction, etc. They are "high achievers" in life and in school; although they have no obligation to enter the military, most of them do indeed plan to either enlist or become an officer. Their experiences and training in the Gloucester Sea Cadets give them an advantage upon entering the military, in both hands on experience and leadership skills. As our program grows we will become more involved in the Gloucester community, reaching out to and supporting area veterans through the local chapters of organizations like the AMVETS, VFW, American Legion and the Gloucester Veterans Services Office. All of these plans will feed into the cadets' understanding of Gloucester's heritage and build upon their own sense of community service and leadership skills.

The Beaverton Social Justice League and Beaverton School District’s HELP Center are hosting a one night Sleep Out on the streets of Beaverton to bring awareness to the lack of services for Beaverton’s homeless with the focus on families with children. Beaverton School District’s (BSD) HELP Center (Homeless Education Liaison Program) is responsible for providing services to the district’s homeless students. During the '15-'16 school year, as of 01/16/16, the BSD documented and served 980 homeless students, 45 of them are unsheltered, 53 are staying in motels, and 97 are or have been in the county shelter. The rest are either in shared housing, couch surfing or in transitional living programs. Beaverton has no emergency severe weather shelter and there is only one severe weather shelter in all of Washington County who allows families with children. This is not awesome. What is awesome is many community groups are working together to find solutions for these children and this serious challenge in our community. The Beaverton Sleep Out will consist of invited individuals and groups, including Beaverton’s elected officials, civic organizations, community and church leaders. There will be a panel on homelessness with speakers from Beaverton and Washington County to talk to this issue. The Sleep Out will be held in Central Beaverton at Beaverton First United Methodist Church, the Fountain Park and the grass in front of the Library. Participants can choose to either sleep in tents outside or sleep in a simulated warming shelter. Soup dinner will be provided as well as breakfast food and snacks. Saturday morning the Sleep Out will continue an education component by hosting booths of local groups working on homelessness in Beaverton and Washington County. We will talk to Beaverton Farmers Market goers about the need for services. Getting all these leaders in one place to work on this critical issue will be very awesome. We plan on hosting the event April 15th and 16th, 2016. Our plan is to use half of the grant for seed money for an outreach project called, “Shelter Us Beaverton”. We will be printing information about homelessness in Beaverton on umbrellas and giving them to everyone who participates in the Sleep Out. (requesting donations that will be used to purchase more umbrellas) The goal of the project is to help raise awareness for the critical need of a severe weather shelter in our often cold and rainy climate. Everyone who carries one becomes an ambassador of this mission. The other half of the grant would be used for promotional material, renting canopies, supplies, volunteer t-shirts etc. My name is Jolene Guptill and I started the Beaverton Social Justice League in early 2015. I was born and raised in Beaverton. I have volunteered on numerous City of Beaverton committees and advisory boards and a graduate of Leadership Beaverton. I firmly believe that Beaverton is an awesome place and we must always strive to be more awesome, especially for those who are less fortunate. Our hope is that we can bring the leaders together who can truly effect change. We, as a community, need to get our heads together to solve this problem. No child in our community should be sleeping in a tent or a car. Wouldn’t it be awesome if Washington County would commit to ending homelessness for our children? That is where I first met Lisa Bell-Mentesana who works at the BSD’s HELP Center. Even though I had lived in Beaverton my whole life, I never knew how many homeless we had in Beaverton. We, as a community, hide them away. They tend to be less visual as they are in Portland. Since then, Lisa, her program and her students have been always on my mind. When Beaverton’s only emergency weather warming shelter closed in the Fall of 2013, I started talking with Lisa about getting another one opened. She and I met numerous times, talking about shelter needs and she told me that even if Beaverton opened a traditional warming shelter, children most likely would not be accepted because of liability concerns. Lisa and I have been talking to many residents, leaders and community groups. We are ready to take outreach to a new level. My project is the pilot "The Family Farm." Working with the Union Project in the East End, The Family Farm will be established on the property surrounding their community space on North Negley Avenue. We are in the process of permaculturally designing the space, now. The farm will host 4-5 parent-child teams made up of parents returning from incarceration and the child(ren) left behind. Over the course of a growing season, the teams will work together to learn, grow produce, cook, eat, and heal together. The Union Project additionally provides a space for programming. Outside of lots designated for the participants own growing choices, the Farm will grow high value items which an local juice company has committed to purchasing. Additionally, mushrooms and artisan hot peppers will be grown for farmers market entrepreneurial experience. The farm is one component of a larger mindfulness/urban agriculture/prison re-entry/workforce development project which is developing between community corrections, local service organizations, communities, and employers. Successful community membership and enriching gainful employment are end project goals. "The Family Farm" Union Project location is a pilot for a larger, similar venture in Garfield. Partners include: Maria Garziani, the founder/owner of Healcrest; Renewal Inc, western PA's largest community correctional facility; Dr. Matt Keener, mindfulness-focused integrative psychiatrist and director of emotional health for the #1 iTunes healthcare app on the planet, Doctors on Demand; and others. The intent is to convert Healcrest Farm, an organic herb farm in Garfield, into a workforce development/training space for those exiting the prison-industrial complex machine while growing pre-contracted, organic, high value items for an organic juice company, custom tea blends, local chefs, value-added processing, farmer's market sales, and other pathways to sustainability. Persian dance costumes are non existent in the US, and it is extremely difficult to get costumes from overseas, in part because the majority of the costumes are not produced in Iran anymore. Approximately sixty at risk children from multiple locations in Orlando and Orange County will create original works of art, with narratives to be exhibited for Paint Orlando Blue in April 2016. Paint Orlando Blue is a month long initiative, led by The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families for the prevention of child abuse. Children from Great Oaks Village, Edgewood Children's Ranch, The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families, West Orange Boys and Girls Club, Smith Neighborhood Center, and others will create the art. Different art projects will be planned for each location using a variety of mediums and techniques. Some projects will address the issue of child abuse and prevention. Others will celebrate the joy of a happy childhood. All projects wil give unheard children a voice, the chance to tell the stories of a thousand untold stories. All art will be completed under the guidance of Renée Schneider. Art will be created January - March 2016. The art will be displayed for 2-6 weeks at 4 or more public locations and 2 or more events. Venues selected for exhibits are Orlando City Hall, Orange County Administration Building, SoBo Gallery and St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Some of the art will also be displayed at Spring Swirl and Hear the Story fundraising events for The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families. Based on past years' figures it is estimated that 2,000-2,500 people will view these exhibits. "We art enthusiasts like to talk about the power of art to enlighten, inspire and heal. The Ypsilanti Community Band Association is a parent run organization that supports the Ypsilanti Community Schools Band Program through monetary assistance and volunteer hours to make the activities of the band program happen on a yearly basis. Ypsilanti Community Schools, serving K through 12th grade students, is located in southeast Michigan in the city of Ypsilanti, 35 miles southwest of Detroit. In the 2015-2016 school year, 4,145 students enrolled with 77 percent of the students being minorities and 67 percent being African American or mixed race.The families that comprise the district have a low enough individual family incomes that the entire district has been determined to be a “free lunch” district as defined by the federal poverty guidelines that determine the district’s free lunch status. Seventy three percent of the families in the district meet 100% - 133% of the federal poverty limit. To give that real numbers, it means that a family of four makes approximately $32,000 a year or less. Our goal this year is to offer our students an educational and exciting opportunity. The project we are hoping to fund is Wind Symphony Tour . The total cost of sending 58 musicians and 8 chaperones is $42,900. The cost breaks out to $650 per person. We want to take the students who participate in the YCHS Wind Symphony Band to Boston, MA, for a three-day tour. Included in the trip will be educational tours at the John F Kennedy Library, Harvard University and the Freedom Trail Tour. Most exciting for our students however will the a master class with a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and an opportunity to see the Boston Symphony perform Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. We are hoping to fund this project at least partially with grant funds.

After a very successful marching band season, Mr. Esquibel proposed the idea of creating Castle High School’s very first winterguard. Mr. Alconcel approved the proposal and in January 2014, the Castle Winterguard was created. The goals for Castle Winterguard is to provide education on the pageantry arts; further the growth of students by providing a sound, structured environment that fosters personal growth, self acceptance, self-discipline, and team work; and to promote the values of dedication, hard work and pride in ones accomplishments. Through positive reinforcement, dedication to our young performers, and with the promise to teach not only the pageantry arts but also foster creativity and acceptance of all, the staff of Castle Winterguard will accomplish the goals mentioned above. Winterguard is the sport of indoor colorguard. Modern colorguard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. All of these elements are combined together to tell a story or to portray a concept to the audience. Winterguard teaches one to believe in their ability to accomplish great feats of difficulty not only for their own sense of accomplishment but also for the benefit of the guard as a whole. In 2014, Castle Winterguard performed at the Mililani SpinFest Festival. In the spring of 2015, the winterguard was unable to floor (start-up) due to funding issues. 2016 has started off positive for the colorguard program. Mr. Esquibel and our new staff member, Mrs. Chelsea Prendergast, coupled with some funding support from the Castle Band Aid Association (CBAA). The winterguard has the initial funding needed to start off but unfortunately not enough to meet the demands of the season. We hope to floor a competitive unit this spring competing at shows all over Oahu.

We were initially drawn to SLIME for the acronym - I mean, who wouldn't want to be a part of SLIME, right? _[Note to future applicants, we're suckers for a good name -ed]_ But beyond the amazing name, we were excited by the passion of the organizers of the event, the momentum that the Expo has right now (they've already matched last year's registrations, and they're still months away from their event) and the impact of our particular funds will have to the Expo in 2016 and in future years. Philadelphia, PA – Climb the Wall

Climb the Wall is an indoor rock climbing program for students with learning disabilities (LD). We aim to foster personal agency and promote self-discovery through innovative after-school programs that incorporate rock climbing, yoga and mindfulness meditation. A 2014 report from the National Center for Learning Disabilities indicates that transition planning support from high school through college, and beyond, is greatly lacking among LD students. While 55% of students with learning disabilities have transition plans, disability services personnel from two and four year institutions are sought out only 26% of the time. As a result, students are at risk of dropping out. There is a great need to empower and teach students the language of self-advocacy. Climb the Wall bridges the opportunity gap by offering experiential programs with structured and unstructured activities that provide students with time for self-discovery as they explore their strengths and develop coping mechanisms for their disabilities. Reflection time allows students to process their experience to gain self-knowledge and map new goals. Over six weeks students receive individualized climbing instruction in a safe and supervised environment where students learn the fundamentals of climbing and leave program with a belayer certification and much much more. Free canes for Veterans is as it says. Its a Free cane for a Veteran who depends on a cane for assistance with walking. Its a gift of love from one Veteran to another. Our page is a welcome mix of veterans and non veterans. 8200 likes and we reach 70,000. I give nightly videos of good news. And its much more than just an overwhelming order of over 500 orders and one man making them. We treat depression and PTSD with Chicken Soup ( your mother gave it to you when you were sick. It didn't cure you but it made you feel better. ) that's Random Acts of Kindness . It redirects the mind. We have never asked formoney. My cousin set up a go fund me account and it has paid for the shipping of 200 canes. But with 300 or more left to ship we will run out of funds I had to join up with another group called Veteran Horizons for protection under their 501 3c. But we share no funding. Both of our groups receive no pay. 100 % goes to spipping and suppies to make the canes. 1000 would pay shipping for an estimated 50 canes of the 300 to ship. Anything will help. During the call they will face many obstacles, including terrible smooth jazz, the dread of infinitely being stuck on hold, and accidentally launching a nuclear war. In other words, it’s just like an average call to the cable company. A grant from the Awesome Foundation will help me hire voice actors and will also help me keep the line active and free to the public. I think maintaining a mysterious corporate customer service number, confusing and disturbing anyone foolish enough to call it, would be a great public service.

We Work We Win is a dual project that provides hands-on work readiness skills while also providing supplemental food resources for 160 youth from homes with serious food insecurities. The student lead "free grocery" will also be open to the local community surrounding Helensview School in NE Portland, Oregon. Students will help to (1) organize food drives, (2) connect with local food panties and community gardens in the area (3) operate and run a student lead "free" grocery store for Helensview Students and Community members at large. The majority of all students at Helensview School (over 90%) are at or below poverty levels. Nearly all Helensview Students face serious food insecurity on a regular basis. The overwhelming majority of our students have little or no work experience and need realistic, hands-on opportunities for work-readiness and work ethics in action. The community surrounding Helensview School in NE Portland are at or below poverty level.

48in48 started with a goal to empower communities to help 48 local nonprofits in 48 hours by assisting their marketing and technology efforts through hackathon-style events. This event began with two Atlanta-based CEOs, Jeff Hilimire of Dragon Army and Adam Walker of Sideways8, with an idea to provide highly skilled professionals in technology with an opportunity to use their skills for a philanthropic purpose. 48in48 proved to be a huge success for volunteers as well as for the participating local non profit organizations! In addition to website development, non profits also received logos, blog posts, web content, personal website training sessions, Adwords training and 6 to 12 months of hosting. Each nonprofit received $25,000 of value bringing the total value delivered by 48in48 volunteers to $1.2M over the course of the project! Because of this success, 48in48 has already received a national award from Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. The goal of this project is to bring 48in48 to multiple cities around the US while continuing to execute the event in Atlanta.

El Paso, TX (Inativo) – Big Brite - Community LED Painting

Remember Lite Brite...that wonderful light up peg painting game and choking hazard from the 80s? Now imagine that 10000 times bigger and powered by color changing LEDs. The Big Brite will allow all of us old enough to remember the original Lite Brite to collectively re-experience the fun of painting with light and introduce younger ones to the wonderful world of collaborative artwork. The Big Brite is based around a matrix of smart RGB LED pixels. The color of each individual pixel can be changed by "painting" it with a specially programmed brush. Using this simple system anyone can jump right in and start making awesomely huge digital paintings. With multiple brushes teams of painters can collaborate on a piece, or everyone can go nuts and see what magic comes out of the chaos. At this point, we've built a working prototype of the Big Brite and brush but need funds to make it bigger...much, much BIGGER. We'd like to install the final piece at Cleveland Square Park on a warm Spring night and invite all El Pasoans to come leave their mark. The Big Brite public painting event would be a great way to welcome AWESOME EL PASO to the city, and we're sure would generate a huge amount of press and social media coverage for both Awesome EP and Fab Lab EP. We could even start with "AWESOME EL PASO" Like most projects developed at Fab Lab EP, the Big Brite will be released under an Open Source license so that anyone in El Paso (and beyond) can replicate and improve upon the design as they wish.

She’s 22, has 3 credits, and quit high school because of bullying and severe anxiety. She’s never had a job or been a volunteer. She’s now upgrading at PELC and earning credits toward her diploma. Now imagine her and a PELC staff, selling popcorn from our awesome cart: PELC Pops at one of the many County events. She begins to feel more comfortable during this supervised training. She’s raising funds and awareness for her school, and feels good about being able to ‘give back’. She smiles, hands customers their popcorn, makes change, and wishes them a good day. On the way home, she’s so proud of the work she’s done, the skills she’s learned, and can’t stop talking about how much fun it was. She has engaged: with customers, staff, herself, and her community. Most of our students have limited workplace experience, as well as anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. They need significant mentoring, job coaching, and support in order to learn the skills necessary to attend school and find meaningful employment. This funding would allow us to operate a small scale, portable, and self-sustaining training site. Students would learn transferable skills such as customer service and cash handling, as well as skills related to planning, ordering, and maintaining a social enterprise. The hours they work can count towards those that are required to graduate with an OSSD or as a coop credit. There are many amazing events in PEC. Sadly, most of our students don’t attend these events for a variety of reasons, including a lack of skill, confidence, and support. The recent Vital Signs Report states that youth have a serious lack of engagement in their community. We are always looking for events to attend, but that doesn't increase their ‘engagement’. They need to be more involved, but in a safe and nurturing way. This popcorn cart would be a vehicle to engage, an opportunity to try new experiences, and a chance to broaden networks. It’s an awesome win-win!

I have long seen dance events as a form of healing energy work that we can employ to release excess energy and stress, come together as a community and adjust our collective and personal moods. While options exist for commercial top 40 dancing in the area, I believe my emphasis on non-commercial and underground sounds from across genres and around the world, presented in non-club environments, serves a different set of goal: To promote the original tenants of dance music culture - Peace, love, unity and respect (PLUR) and create a safe space for self expression and the potential for ecstatic release through dance. As a celebration of the Awesome Foundations support of my ongoing community service, if I am awarded this prize, I will commit to additionally organizing a series of two - 2 part workshops for up to 8 participants each. The 1st workshop would be: Dj-ing 101: 2 x 6 hour sessions with a curriculum built around: -Crate digging -Listening -Setting up your gear to get the best sound -Vinyl and digital djing basics -Basic beat matching -Working with instrumentals and accapellas -Blending and transition techniques -Basic scratching -Looping, effects and other tools Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop, a controller and audio files, or records The 2nd workshop would be on Production: 2 x 6 hour sessions and the curriculum would include: -Introduction to software – Audacity (Freeware), Ableton Live -Linear editing -Working with samples -Working with virtual instruments -MIDI control surfaces, sound cards and such. Suggested equipment, a laptop with some space on it, external soundcard/mixer and/or midi controllers Cost - Free, Requirements: a short bio and explanation of musical interests, experience (if any), and goals in advance. DISLOYAL (PEC/DIY/SK8) will engage teenagers from the County in a 2 day skateboard making workshop led by an experienced teenager Youth Leader from Toronto supported by an expert skateboard designer/street artist Mentor Teacher. Participants will not only learn from a peer in their age group and take away a hand-made Canadian Maple skateboard (made using the Roarockit vacuum press prototyping method) with their very own custom personalized graphics ready to ride at the local skatepark, but the youth will also develop transferable creative and entrepreneurial skills to continue to make their own local boards with their friends. Canadian youth are primarily targeted and marketed to as passive consumers of professional, mostly American, skateboard brands: DISLOYAL will be a catalyst to support an emerging local do-it-yourself skateboard culture in the County by mentoring local youth to be active producers of their own culture. I bought a fairy door for our family at the PEC WI Craft show in July 2014. Without telling our children (ages 8 & 5) about it, my husband installed it in a large boulder on our front lawn. BEHOLD! Much to the surprise of our children, a miraculous rock fairy had moved into our yard! In the past four months their imaginations have run riot. They leave her notes and gifts (candies, tiny toys, precious treasurers that they want to share). She writes back and leaves treasurers of her own. They concoct crazy plans on how they will trap her, they wonder what fairies eat and where they live when it snows, and they research her in the internet. By installing fairy doors in willing locations throughout the County, I hope to provide a free, imaginative, easy treat for children and families in our community. Families can take a picture of themselves with the door while touring, talk about where the fairy lives, or leave the fairy a note. Social media will allow people to share their discovery. The primary purpose it to give children something that is just for them. But their is also an educational component (schools) and a tourism component (social media). Some doors will be in public places (a park or beach), others will be on private business property (a winery or art gallery), others will be on private property (church or family home). Not all fairy doors are required to be accessible to the public. Think of it as Geo-Caching for children. Doors can be affixed to rock, trees, or buildings. Depending on the surface, the doors are attached with screws or silicone. Yes, some doors will be vandalized, or stolen. They will be outdoors and will experience the elements. But for a few years, kids and families can enjoy a special treat that doesn't exist, on this scale, anywhere else. It's free to enjoy, makes people smile, doesn't hurt the environment, is Ontario made, inspires the imagination, and is so beautiful.
