I have been making candles and room sprays and other things with my Mum's support for a couple of years. Recently I became quite addicted to perfume but natural and unique scents that are quite expensive. They create such a happy sensory place for me to help me cope with environments outside of my home, A month ago my mum purchased all that I needed to get started to experiment making my own blends. Now everywhere I go people are asking me what my perfume is, I proudly say Kakadu Plum, I made it, or whatever other scent I may have made. As I am approaching 15, most of the people my age are looking for part-time jobs around school. For me, that isn't possible. But a business I can manage from home. The perfumes will be unique and promote the amazing and unique scents of the Australian native landscape, others will incorporate my mother's culture: Dutch. The perfumes will have blends that require lower fragrance load and longer lasting base notes so it impacts sensitive people less. Our whole community is disabled and many people are very sensitive to perfumes, and fragrances and it has a significant impact on them if it's not harmonious, it's a negative one. Having lower loads and native fragrances reduces the risk of negative impacts. I have the benefit of my mum who has been working with Aromatherapy for over 30 years and my brother who is an analytical chemist to help me do all the formulations and planning. I have sourced all local businesses for our supplies from glassware to ingredients to ensure our carbon footprint is minimal to zero. It raises awareness that no matter what someone is wearing, it is never the survivor's fault.” SlutWalk started in Toronto in 2011, after a police officer told students at York University that if women wanted to avoid rape they should not dress like sluts. This year’s SlutWalk Ottawa will be focused on the theme of bodily autonomy. “With reproductive rights and transgender healthcare being increasingly at risk,” says Julia, “we want to open the SlutWalk space to more intersectional feminist issues. We will be encouraging speakers from these areas, and those wishing to discuss the traditional SlutWalk themes, to share their stories and perspectives. In addition to making posters beforehand, we will also be hosting a chalking session as the event concludes, where participants will be able to decorate the area with their messages. You might be thinking this is a bit too ambitious for a $1000 grant, and you’re right! We share more specifics about the $1000 below, but here I will explain how this project fits into our broader plans as an organization. Where we are now: our organization is less than two years old, and is run entirely by volunteers. We provide law library services online two to four hours a day through our virtual reference desk. Where we want to be: when we are financially sustainable, we will have paid staff providing law library services up to 12 hours a day both online through our virtual reference desk and in person on a bookmobile. How this project fits in: this project will bring us into the community to provide reference service in person. This grant won’t give us the ability to provide the consistency in service that our long-term plans anticipate, but by introducing ourselves to our neighbors and providing information about how to get service from us online, we will be able to reach more people, which is both critical to our mission and to giving our organization a record of performance that will help us get additional funding. Our goal from the start has been to bring the law library to residents; indeed it was a brainstorm about basing our library on a bookmobile that gave us the final push to establish JusticeAccess. Currently, 1 in 1,000 pregnancies in Scotland are affected. Most babies born with the disability will be paralysed from the waist down, be affected by bowel and bladder complications and will be lifelong wheelchair users. In addition, around 80% of those affected will also have hydrocephalus. This complex condition is a build-up of fluid which causes increased pressure on the brain. Children and young people born with the disability(s) will require lifelong support and have multiple complex support needs. We would be grateful to receive a donation of £500 from the Awesome Foundation to fund accessible sports days for children and young people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus whose families may not be able to afford it otherwise due to financial constraints. Financial strain can lead to isolation for people experiencing it which in turns leads to a reduction in confidence, self-esteem and independence. This isolation for children and young people is also added to by feeling different from their peers and not having people around them who relate to their situation. In addition, many of our families do not have access to accessible greenspaces. These sport outings will provide an opportunity for our children and young people to experience something new, meet new people who have similar experiences to them, develop new skills, enjoy the outdoors and get active, promoting a healthy lifestyle. Furthermore, many children and young people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus do not have confidence to try new activities in the wider community due to specialised needs i.e. shunt, continence and mobility issues. The accessible sport activities are run by experts who know how to support people with complex needs and SBH Scotland will work with facilitators to ensure all specialised needs are met. By looking up, a curious neighbor, dog walker, and restaurant-goer can all be enchanted by a glowing window. One quick view can instill joy and healthy questioning as the artwork presents different visual scenarios -- ranging from a cake-obsessed werewolf to a compilation of flowers in bloom. Curating one artist a weekend, on loop, every Friday and Saturday evening. The window faces a brewery, restaurant, and shop, all of which attract residents to look up and engage with the art. The goal is to now create a pop-up version of the Third Floor Window in various locations. In spaces that are easily accessible by the community, like a neighborhood garden or on a brewery wall, there is an opportunity to have a pop-up art cinema, a space that is for everyone. The current focus is a pop-up in Mt. Lebanon; on the main road is a parklet where families relax after dinner with ice cream. This park is an accessible point for residents to enjoy and engage with video art. "Third Floor Window Pop-up Cinema" would allow emerging artists to showcase their work outside a gallery setting and expose the community to video art. These tangible, handmade expressions of love could get lost, donated away, or thrown out. We match unfinished projects to volunteer finishers who complete and return the garments, blankets, & accessories, to their loved ones. Since we started less than a year ago, we have recruited 12,000+ volunteer “finishers” from around the globe ready to share their skills with strangers. More than 1,000 projects have been connected to local volunteers for completion. Loose Ends aims to ease grief, create community, and inspire generosity that transcends social and political boundaries by connecting strangers bound by a shared experience in handwork. Handworkers are passionate about making, with most creations being a gift for a loved one. An object can take hundreds of hours. When a maker starts a project, they rarely plan on how it would get completed if they were unable to finish it. No one wants to envision that scenario, yet it is common. For the intended recipient, who is often not skilled in the craft, and in the midst of mourning, they are left with the challenge of what to do. It is too sentimental to discard but they don’t know where to turn. This is not a service for hire, it is a labor of love. Loose Ends addresses this need. It benefits both the bereaved and the finisher. There is a shared sense of completion, an act of goodwill for the giver and the receiver. It is often an emotional, in-person exchange of the completed project, in a public place, creating a larger sense of community. It was during this time that Corie began questioning her sexuality and in this community and during those times, she felt safe to do so. Embracing her hew new-found confidence of who she was and coming out as a Lesbian she then moved out to LA and became a successful street artist. Since than the political climate regarding one's freedom of choice in their own sexuality has changed for the worse. Corie watching from afar felt helpless and enraged that this city that she once felt so safe in to discover who she was, no longer felt safe to others going through the same journey. Reaching out through a mutual friend to one of our Board Members, Corie introduced herself and said she needed to do something to make her voice heard, and to give courage to others who may be feeling fear to show their true selves in our city. Corie flew herself out, paid for all her expenses and painted the first mural on the side of The 808 building. The mural is in a 1950's style which represents that we are unfortunately going back to more restrictive times. We are having Corie come back to Orlando and finish with the second mural that will continue in the same style with a straight couple in the middle and two same sex couples on either side. We are hoping that this mural will bring hope and unity to the community and perhaps courage to those who see it to show the world their true selves. Lá acontecem atualmente: cursos de capacitação em cerâmica e culinária; aulas de teatro para adolescentes; atividades físicas para terceira idade; feirinha de produtos artesanais feitos por moradores da região; reuniões de interesse da comunidade. Em virtude do uso constante e intenso dos espaços existentes, a Casa precisa de manutenção constante, tanto no que se refere à limpeza interna e externa, quanto nos consertos e pequenos reparos sempre necessários, para que a estrutura se mantenha íntegra. No momento, o mais urgente é providenciarmos a pintura da Casa por dentro e por fora. A pintura está bastante danificada em virtude da ação do tempo, de algumas infiltrações que aconteceram durante o último período de chuva e também do uso constante das áreas. Já conseguimos a doação da mão de obra para realizar o serviço. A pintura será feita em mutirão, organizada por um colaborador que é pintor profissional. Este nosso colaborador diz que se sente bastante agradecido por participar das atividades promovidas na Associação, que atualmente são todas gratuitas, e pretende retribuir fazendo a pintura da nossa Casa. The Omega project is to achieve a dream and create the finest scope that I have ever created. I plan on creating a table top or "parlor" scope that will have an extremely large oil filled object chamber that will contain the lamp worked glass and other objects that will provide the color for the mandela pattern. The object chamber will be turned by way of a geared mechanism. The mirror chamber will contain two front surface mirrors will will be configured to produce an eight pointed mandela pattern. The body of the scope and object chamber will all be made of polished stainless steel. When it is completed it should be a very fine instrument. Costs associated with making larger kaleidoscope projects has always been on the expensive side but recently stainless steel prices have gone up drastically. I estimate the materials and machining costs for this project will easily reach or exceed $5000. This is not insurmountable but the first stage of the project is the most expensive stage and I am currently stymied by the cost of the first stage. If I can just get the first batch of stainless steel and arrange some machining this project will take flight and I am confident that I can piece together financing as necessary to complete this scope.e i I have some of the materials already and have a good working relationship with a neighbor to do the machining that is beyond my capabilities. One way or another this project is a dream of mine and I'm going to make it happen. This scope needs to be made and I'm going to make it. It would just be awesome if I had some help. This two week program will introduce young Cubans to computer science, robotics, and engineering topics. My aim is to give students in Cuba the opportunity to learn about a field which is largely non-existent in Cuba. Due to the current economic and political situation in Cuba, basic necessities are extremely hard to come by. As is only natural, living essentials have been prioritized, however this has come at the cost of other crucial but often overlooked needs of the Cuban youth. Even before the current economic and humanitarian crisis in Cuba, access to technology, let alone technology-related education has been severely limited. I hope to fill this gap for a group of 15 students in Holguin this summer. I am coordinating and teaching this program with a local official, Maria Yi, and a family friend in the US, Fran Bradley. Fran has been working on installing water filtration systems in Cuba, with Maria Yi, for the past 40 years. They are both very experienced with the complications of running humanitarian programs in Cuba and have been advising me during the process of planning this program, and will continue to support it once I am physically in Holguin. Some of the important mechanical and electrical concepts that I plan on teaching the students will be done with lego robots. Throughout the two week program I will be teaching them the fundamentals of sensors, actuators, and programming. Hopefully by the end they will be able to make their own creations with their newfound engineering knowledge. I have been informed that Maria's nine year old son, Jesús, is a huge fan of Legos but sadly due to the situation in Cuba, his passion is quite limited. Jesús and other children in the community are eagerly awaiting the program, so I hope to make it a unique and enjoyable experience for them. These funds will allow us to deliver a powerful event for the local community that showcases ten inspiring local food initiatives, and allows attendees to hear the stories, challenges and aspirations of these projects. Funds will allow us to provide locally and ethically sourced event catering, a Welcome to Country, thankyou gifts for our speakers, subsidised ticketing options, and promotional materials at the event and for use in outreach to maximise attendance. MTL provides tools and instructions on how to use them, a shop space with larger machinery, and frequent classes to anyone who joins. Having access to these tools and the knowledge to use them can vastly improve lives. With our construction tools, damaged stairs can be repaired and made safe. Bannisters and grab bars can be installed so older people can stay in their homes. Houses can be insulated and weatherized, saving energy costs. Doors and windows can be repaired or upgraded to prevent theft. With our gardening tools, ladders and scaffolding, yard and exterior work can be done to enhance the look and value of a home or business. The cost of tools prevents many from performing these worthwhile activities. MTL allows people to extend their home or business repair budget significantly and get more done for less. We help the environment through fewer tools being discarded in landfills or produced and transported in the first place. A community that has a tool library - and makes use of it - is a stronger and more resilient one. Property values are maintained or improved. The mural is a faithful rendering of Winslow Homer's 1874 painting "The Flirt.' ‘The Flirt’ depicts an older man and four boys sailing a catboat in the harbor of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The fishing boat, cleaves through the sea waves, bending to the wind. The tiller and sheet are operated by the older man whilst the young boys recline on the deck looking at the sea. The boy perched at the rear looks out towards the horizon and seagulls in the distance. The name of the boat 'The Flirt' is painted on the rear of the boat. In addition to grant money contributed by Awesome Gloucester, additional funds were contributed by individual Trustees of Awesome Gloucester who elected to make additional contributions. I am a citizen of Cherokee Nation that lives in Edmonds, Wa which is over 2000 miles from our Reservation and even farther from our ancestral lands in the Southeast. One of the issues regarding language preservation is access to learning materials. When I began sharing the images with other language learners as well as the children at my daughter's school in Shoreline, there was an instant joyful and awesome enthusiasm to color and chat about how our language interconnects with our plant and animal ancestors. It provides not only a language lesson but an insight into our indigenous cultural understanding of the earth. I have a few more pages to go and would love to publish and distribute! The word "Gadugi" means something akin to working together and sharing for the greater good. It is central to Cherokee language and spiritual and cultural beliefs. Many of our words have multiple meanings which I show in the drawings and are associated with traditional stories. This year I have reassembled my shop in my family's new home in Silver City, New Mexico and am thrilled to have become part of the local artist community. I am a member of the Grant County Art Guild where my work is shown and where I advertise availability for commission projects. After completing a four year apprenticeship in a blacksmith shop in rural WV, I started my own business. I started doing art shows and accepting commission work then. I had the privilege of being hired to design and make a number of interesting, challenging pieces. But my wife and I were not experienced in running a business, and learned some hard financial lessons. So we closed shop to regroup and moved to a new place. This time around, we attended a small business class and have taken advantage of the information available through a local university assisting new small business owners. Blacksmithing is quite unique, a trade that threatens to be forgotten. I am genuinely thrilled to see the work of other blacksmith artists and have enjoyed demonstrating for adults and children at art shows. It's a fascinating process. I have been hand forging metal for fifteen years now, and I am still in the honeymoon stage, in awe of the possibilities of my craft, I work out of a modest building that was gifted to us by our neighbor, A pole barn that has been converted to meet our needs. Inside I use the forge my wife's father built, an anvil that belonged to his father, and hundreds of other tools bought, found, traded and handmade. The 2023 exhibition opens during Newburgh OPEN Studios, September 30 + October 1, and runs through November 15. The Newburgh exhibition is part of the international Terrain Biennial 2023, an initiative of Terrain Exhibitions, founded in 2013 in Oak Park, Illinois by artist Sabina Ott. The biennial was created on a volunteer basis in the spirit of community building through free and accessible public art installations and events staged in residential neighborhoods across the US and worldwide. The Biennial relies on self-organizing, and I serve as the producer of Newburgh’s exhibition and point of contact (“superhost”) with the Chicagoland Terrain Biennial team. The 2023 Terrain Biennial theme is Mycelium Connection to honor and expand Terrain’s mission to make unexpected, vital, human, and environmental connections. Mycelium is a thriving underground network of fungal threads, essential for many ecosystems. While its geographical reach is immense, mycelium is invisible to many. Likewise, Terrain Biennial is connected through neighborhoods around the globe and cultivates solidarity across differences. Both art and mycelium spring up in unexpected spaces and deserve to be shared with all. Generally, it can influence survivors by helping them to develop positive coping skills, thereby mitigating the negative effects of the trauma (Leech & Littlefield, 2011). That led me to the desire to build a garden stand on my property (I live in town but in the corner of one of the main streets/highway). I have started the project by getting pallets donated by a local business and a local grocery store. I have purchased tools, have the plans and just need the finishing touches and to build. I am a teacher and to me it’s important that I take care of our community, don’t waste food and show students that we are always learning and able to help others. In all, 60 beneficiaries will on average engage directly in the 2hrs/week x 48week habitat creating programme; 1) To buy and install a new pond essential for the lifecycles of frogs, dragonflies and water beetles, and also making it easier for creatures like hedgehogs and birds to bathe. 2) Buy beehive houses attracting bees and harvesting honey for local community. 3) Build a bug hotel, a dry space that will attract different creepy crawlies and good for lots of different types of minibeast such as ladybirds, bees, woodlice and spiders. 4) Build birds nesting/hedgehog houses. 5) Maintain the condition we have created over the last few months of a beautifully well managed park landscape, attracting and encouraging community groups to come outdoor to visit and enjoy the park. We currently are trying to purchase 250 kilos of rice and lentils every month to keep the kitchen cooking, but unfortunately do not have the funding needed at this moment. By supporting this awesome project the money not only is used to help provide the much needed meals for children in need, but also helps support a new nonprofit that has big plans and dreams for the coming years to begin ending a daily hunger and struggle for thousands of children. Our main partnership kitchen who we are doing our best to continue to support is located on the outskirts of one of the largest homeless encampments in South America. They currently are feeding 300 homeless children daily but are struggling staying afloat due to lack of food and donations. Our goal this year is to purchase enough food for them on a monthly basis to help them stay open, at least for a few days a week. I visited this kitchen and volunteered with them earlier this year and the work they do is absolutely awesome and I want nothing more then to make sure the kids there continue to have meals to eat. The result was magical. The play was a huge hit, selling out performances and bringing new audiences to the theatre. I would like to make a record of the music with the original San Antonio performers. The talent pool in San Antonio is amazing, and a record would showcase mostly Latine/Latinx artists. Fabulous Monsters is about women in punk rock and features both older women and younger women: " When punk rock exploded in L.A., Sally, and Lou were there: feminists, Latinas, queens of noise. One went pop, one stayed punk but sparks from their tumultuous friendship remain. Decades later, they try to overcome old wounds, forgive each other, and rock as hard as they ever did." The play has gotten awards from Steppenwolf in Chicago and the Latino Theatre Company in Los Angeles. A demo record would continue to give life to the project, and San Antonio talent would be heard at theatres around the country. We would also have the opportunity to get more of Fea's music out into the world. This all-female punk band is an inspiration. They also have a percentage in the royalties of the play. In conclusion, a record would show off the massive amount of talent residing and rocking in San Antonio. As an artist, my main influences stem from my deep connection to Southern culture, which is reflected in my work as a filmmaker. Growing up in the South has given me a unique perspective on life, and I strive to represent this region authentically through my films. The rarity of seeing high-quality independent films coming out of the South has also influenced my work, as I seek to break this trend and showcase the artistic contributions of this region. My past experience shooting commercial fashion campaigns has provided me with the technical skills and knowledge needed to undertake this project. This experience has allowed me to capture authentic moments and combine them with a slick and polished look. Furthermore, my personal connection to the South runs even deeper as my family originates from the region. After the passing of my father six years ago, this project has become even more personal and is dedicated to his memory. Game Convention is focused on non-digital, tabletop games. Tabletop games include board, card, role playing (Dungeons and Dragons), and miniatures games. 2022 marked the inaugural PopiCon!. This event acted as a memorial service where friends and family could celebrate the life of Tom "Popi" Crisovan, my father-in-law, who was an avid gamer his entire life. Once we could open up to the public due to Covid-19 restrictions being relaxed, we sought to make it a larger, public, and annual event in Downtown South Bend. On Saturday, February 4th, 2023 we held the event at Stockroom East with the ambitious goal of having 200 attendees. The response exceeded our expectations with nearly 400 people attending the event throughout the day. Included in the attendees were 10 vendors, each an individual entrepreneur or small business selling unique and in many cases hand-crafted items. Multiple vendors expressed how well they did in terms of sales at the event and how much they are looking forward to next year's PopiCon! It was important for us as organizers to hold the event downtown to support local restaurants and businesses. They were very supportive of the event by offering gift certificates and other prizes to hand out to game winners during the event. We wanted a family-friendly event so offered tickets at no charge for anyone 14 or under. Of the 400 attendees, we had roughly 50 kids attend and play games. People could also get in free by hosting a game at the convention. The only criticism we heard throughout the day was that we needed a large venue. We agree and are seeking larger venues to grow PopiCon! 2024 once again. We think with enough community support we can triple in size. In addition to growing the event in 2024, we aim to diversify our audience by reaching out to the LGBTQ Center, La Casa de Amistad, and South Bend Heritage Foundation.
