Oklahoma City, OK (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Inclusion

I booked space for an art display at the Norman Public Library West side location. Initially, I wanted to connect art to children's literature classics in order to help young adults reconnect with classic literature. As I started developing my character sketches, I realized that almost all of the main characters in classic children's literature are perceived as White, whether or not they are explicitly described as being so. Why should children of color feel a connection to a genre that doesn't represent them or give them characters to wholly connect with?

I am re-imagining these characters as people of color in order to promote art and literature appreciation in the community, and to help non-White children see themselves in these characters. Currently in progress are Native American Gandalf, African American Mary Poppins, Native Harriet the Spy, biracial Matilda and a knight in shining armor as the literal centerpiece whose ethnicity will be up to the viewers perception, as his helmet will be down. I will complete at least 5 portraits, but hope to complete 7. For the Harriet and Matilda pieces, I plan to use two Norman children in order to help children see themselves as heroines./heroes.

In addition to having the art on display for free, I will provide a free print of any of the paintings to anyone who checks out one of the books referenced by my paintings. I would also like to make available free copies of an illustrated reading list (an image of a bookshelf with no titles on the books so that they can be written in).

The artwork is scheduled to go on display November 1st.

I would use to funds to purchase art supplies and materials, make prints of the paintings which will be given free to the public, make illustrated reading lists free to the public, and take time away from income-generating activities.

Gloucester, MA – NSHP's 30th Anniversary: Bringing the Quilt Home

The North Shore Health Project is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a non-profit located in Gloucester. For 30 years we have offered support services to people with HIV/AIDS. While we have expanded our services to include hepatitis C and substance use disorder, we are returning to our roots: this request is to honor those people from Gloucester who lost their lives in the early days of the AIDS crisis. Many clients, long-term survivors all, remember those who died before there were any life-changing drugs invented. Conversations at our congregate meals and support groups always come back to reminiscing about those people, many founders of the HP, who are gone.
Our Awesome Project is to bring to Gloucester 3 panels from the AIDS Quilt to display at City Hall during the month of December 2019. The panels will hang for a month in Kyrouz Auditorium.
The Names Project "rents" the squares with very specific instructions on how to handle and display them. We have located 3 panels which are all Gloucester-specific; each one has at least one panel with a name from Gloucester. These names are friends, sons, daughters, mothers and fathers, people who were blindsided by a nameless disease which cut their lives short. These panels represent the early founders of the Health Project and are of major significance to the Gloucester community. There are 5,956 squares which make up the entire quilt.
I have met people whose lives have been ravaged; shunned, stigmatized, homeless, hungry for most of their lives, they are now living healthy lives thanks to life-saving drugs. Many of their friends and family members weren't so lucky. This project is an effort to offer anyone who wants to see these individual works of art up close, and in the city in which they lived and worked.
This display will be open to the public whenever City Hall is open. It is meant to be reflective and somber. We will host specific events as well.

Geelong (Ոչ ակտիվ) – The Ultimate Pop Up Junkyard Playground - 3214

The Ultimate Pop-Up Junkyard Playground is a two day art extravaganza of children and young people aged 6-16yrs of age coming together to design and build their own village and it is coming to Geelong for its 2nd incarnation

Participants are welcomed onto a site where they are supplied with recycled and reclaimed building materials, an assortment of found and reclaimed objects and the tools to build their ideal creations.

Professional artists, architects, landscape gardeners and a host of volunteers are there to help support them bring these ideas to life by teaching them how to use tools safely, share building and design tips and support them in their creative endeavors. The kids ultimately are in charge, it is their ideas but we provide them with the support they need to do so safely.

The project is based upon the original concept introduced to the world by landscape architect Karl Sorenson in 1942. It was his answer to the loss of access to free measured risky and creative play in a world that was increasingly becoming urbanized and hostile towards children and young peoples desire to be loud, messy and creative.

We have taken this concept and used it as the inspiration to create two day events that not only provide tools, materials and support but also examine the participants rights and their capacity to engage in the creation of their community. It is an art project that provides the participants with a safe space to share their views and engage in measured risky play. It is built upon an an ethos of inclusiveness and ultimately our aim is to provide spaces for children and young people where their ideas, creativity and passion are respected. and listened to by the community.

We have been invited to hold this event in the 3214 are at the Cloverdale Community Centre. The 3214 area is often viewed in a negative light, this program provides a platform for the younger generation to prove that they are capable of creating magic.

Homelessness (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Hired to Home / Home Brew Coffee

Hired to Home is a start up social enterprise organization (incorporated as a non-profit) whose mission is to promote the intentional hiring of homeless individuals, and combat nimbyism by enhancing dialogue around the issue of homelessness within communities.

Through our operational arm, Home Brew Coffee, we will employ and train homeless individuals in specialty coffee barista skills, supporting them back into long-term employment. 100% of profits are then re-invested back into the Hired to Home mission.

As of the last official count, there were well over half a million 'known' homeless people in the US. This is an increase from the previous year, and a figure which is widely regarded by those serving the community to be an underestimation.

Securing employment is a key factor in transitioning homeless individuals into stable housing. But this can be extremely challenging when, in addition to having no permanent place to call home, many have significant employment gaps, lack confidence due to their experiences so far, and may also have criminal records owing to the many laws targeting them. However we know that most homeless people do want to work.

Home Brew Coffee will recruit homeless individuals in an open-minded, and non-judgmental process. The coffee shop itself will also serve as a vessel to increase community engagement and education around the issue of homelessness and, provide an easy way for consumers to support their homeless neighbors. For example, through paying it forward, community action opportunities, or simple conversation over a coffee. We launched our first pilot phase for Home Brew Coffee in July/August this year, training 4 individuals.

The success of Home Brew Coffee will in turn help promote Hired to Home’s wider intentional hiring campaign to increase the proactive employment of homeless individuals in the broader commercial world.

(Note: Home Brew Coffee is a DBA registration for Hired to Home)

Almere (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Winter Playground Almere

Awesome Without Borders (Ոչ ակտիվ) – The Inclusive Middle School Classroom

The Inclusive Middle School Classroom aims to provide culturally, racially, sexually, and gender diverse books for ELA classrooms in traditionally underserved and undervalued communities. Here in South Bend, IN, our public school coporation has been struggling to build more inclusive classrooms that better reflect students and many teachers (despite wanting to do more) are unsure what such a classroom would even look like! By partnering with a local bookstore employee/retired school teacher, I believe that we have been able to comprehensively plan out an inclusive classroom that feels welcoming to students from all backgrounds, regardless of their race, sexuality, socio-economic status, religious identity, gender identity, or immigration status.
This is mainly achieved through the building of in-class libraries from which students can pull from for either class directed or independent readings. For example, students should be able to find books that focus on characters who are POC and encounter challenges similarly faced by our students. In addition, there are "teacher resource" materials available in these classroom libraries, which help guide educators in crafting lessons that embrace the different voices in the classroom, rather than tolerate them.
Right now, we are attempting a pilot program for the 2019-2020 academic year at Lasalle Intermediate, a public school located in the (often ignored) west side of the city of South Bend, IN.

San Jose, CA – The 3D Printed String Quartet

The San José Chamber Orchestra (SJCO) is planning a project for our senior Youth Chamber Orchestra to present in concert a piece featuring a string quartet of 3D printed instruments. The project would use free patterns downloaded from online sources including Hovalin 3D printed violins and o-cello.com, the donated use of a 3D printer and 3D printing expertise and mentorship, purchased materials and expertise from a few of our students. 3D printed violins were initially designed, not only as an experiment, but as a potential way to provide low cost violins to students who would be prevented from joining an orchestra by the cost of the instruments. We would use this project as a way for our students to explore aspects of their music education through the actual creation of instruments, connecting music to math and physics and creating a link between a solid historic tradition and technology which is moving so far forward. Once the instruments are printed and working we would begin rehearsing for our students performance on our May “Futures Portfolio” which is part of the SJCO Subscription season. The instruments would then be kept for future use by our students and/or would be donated to programs that are in need of instruments.

Other health professionals running similar existing choirs internationally and nationally have been contacted and they have expressed interest in collaborating, implying the opportunities to carry out research that will contribute to knowledge in the field of music and medicine. The neurologist involved in the project will be a key player in performing research activities.

The proposed project aims to provide PWD and their carers with access to therapeutic singing group that withholds potential for health and well-being. Research suggests that participating in creative group activities as choirs, improves the dyadic relationship between PWD and their carers and enables support networks to be formed between carers. Participating in singing allows for self-expression which triggers the release of brain chemicals associated with pleasure. Stress and anxiety that inevitably arises when caring for others or when a person affected by the symptoms of dementia is alleviated as a result. Further, participation in singing of familiar songs engages PWD in here-and-now interactions that are meaningful and intentional. Singing is also a highly accessible and low-cost intervention that PWD and carers may utilise in other environments and empowers individuals to self-manage their own health.

I am a Suicide Prevention Trainer, certified through LivingWorks. While we hear quite often about Suicide and the need to combat the growing trend, a quick google search will show the lack of opportunities for individuals to learn how. When you do find a training they can be cost prohibitive (one recurring class in the Pittsburgh area is $395 to attend).

I would use this grant to provide free training through out the community. This amount would lend to a minimum of 50 trained individuals walking in our local communities affecting change.

Pittsburgh, PA – BTBSN After School Program

The BlackteaBrownsuga Network was started in the Winter of 2016. At the time, I had recently moved to Pittsburgh from Arkansas. As I talked to people and became more acquainted with my surroundings, I noticed a void in Pittsburgh. I noticed a void of positive depictions of black people in the local media, and I noticed fragmented efforts of lone community members trying to make a difference. I created the BlackteaBrownsuga Network to serve the black community as a platform for community-minded individuals to discuss solutions to issues and to connect people to resources that already exist in their community.

The BlackteaBrownsuga Network is a live video-casting network that discusses global issues in the world and how they affect the community. We create and produce our own shows, which are supported by ad revenue. I also use my equipment and skills to produce podcasts, audio books, and other media for clients, as well as to DJ at community events.

As a solely digital entity, The BlackteaBrownsuga Network (BTBSN) has partnered with schools and businesses both small and large. We are now opening a headquarters in a storefront in McKees Rocks that will give us the public presence we need to boost our impact in and around Pittsburgh as well as within the McKees Rocks community. In particular, this location will allow me to run a free after school program for youth interested in learning the industry.

Youth in Mckees Rocks will have the opportunity to learn how to plan, record and edit their own audio/visual products, engage with their audience(s) via social media and practice basic digital literacy skills. The central location of this after-school program will be the creative space: a safe, comfortable space within the BTBSN headquarters that will be equipped with the technology and people resources that students will need to create and refine their audio/visual projects.

We want to be champions on and off the court at our netball club and research ways we can make our local environment a better place to belong and show what a difference a sporting club can make to our community. We have lots of ideas on what we can do including getting rid of straws, setting up recycle stations, teach people how and what to recycle, getting a water tank to capture rain and reduce our water usage, make money for our club through can/bottle deposits.

<b>Valor do aporte</b>
R$ 5.000, 00

San Francisco, CA – Write vs. Wrong

I'm looking to make a series of 50 postcards, one for each state, about climate change. The postcards will be a sort of sequel to my internet-viral art project National Parks 2050 (www.hrothstein.com/national-parks-2050) and will feature a vintage aesthetic based on those well known "Greetings from [Place]" postcards.

Each postcard will highlight an effect of climate change currently being felt in each state. For example, the California postcard will show a landscape ravaged by wildfire and the letters in "California" filled with flames. Yeah, I know... pretty uplifting stuff, but important to call out! On the back of each postcard will be a short bit of text explaining how climate change is responsible for whatever is shown on front.

My plan is to partner with a grassroots organization (or several orgs) to organize a letter writing campaign to Congress using the postcards.

Once complete, the whole project will be available for view on Instagram @HRothsteinArt and my website (bloo button, above).

Lake Mac – Yoga Magic Lake Mac

My awesome project is to bring children's and family yoga to our community! I have been volunteering at a community preschool (please see attached supporting info) for over a year now, and the benefits inspired me to get qualified so I may offer more yoga to children, families and educators!

Yoga changed my life, and as a Mental Health support worker I see the challenges faced by individuals on a daily basis... Including our young community.

So many are struggling, whether it is quietly or outwardly as some children express in different behaviours and difficulty regulating their emotions. This then leads to feelings of sadness and losing control, and so many of us experience traumatic emotion and event that we just don't process. Yoga allows us to feel, tomove the energy out and make way for the new. We learn to control ourselves and navigate life that little bit better making way for light, love, peace and joy...The spirit of life!

What if we can equip our young people with the tools and skills to feel well, confident, happy and strong with all that they have inside the already!
We make Yoga fun.. bringing dance, games and storytelling weaved with breathing, yoga poses, mindfulness and relaxation.

My project "Yoga magic" will bring yoga into preschools, day care centres, family homes, community centres and playgroups... The possibilities are endless and I am open to anything that benefits our community, and builds connection and breathes heart and soul into community spirit.
I would love Yoga to be accessible to all.... So if I am aware a family is experiencing hardship I will do my utmost to offer yoga to them whilst being respectful of their privacy.

As we learn in our classes- Yoga is not something we leave on the mat. It is a practice that we take out into our lives- where awareness and feeling and kindness become part of how we travel through life. How? Well that's where the magic is..... And I am excited, dedicated and blessed to be able to share it.

Miami, FL – Project Self-Advocate Leadership Training (SALT)

Project SALT (Self-Advocate Leadership Training) is an experiential 3-day intensive leadership program that teaches individuals with disabilities strategies to advocate for themselves, others and affect larger systems change. Our vision is to produce an ever-growing cadre of individuals with the capacity for self-determination, independence and the ability to participate in their communities in meaningful ways.
This project is awesome for many reasons. Mainly because it teaches people with disabilities to stand up for their rights, find their voice and improve their advocacy skills. People with disabilities want to study, get jobs, have careers, vote and even run for public office. They want to be included. This is a leadership program created by people with disabilities for people with disabilities and led by people with disabilities. There is a motto in the disability world stating, “nothing about us, without us.”
Thus far, the program has trained over 50 individuals with disabilities, both visible and invisible. Our model is a train the trainer model. Five graduates demonstrated exemplary leadership and are now acting as a SALT trainer. Since completing SALT, six are on a non-profit board, ten have gained employment, and two live on their own. This is exceptional because the majority of young adults with disabilities (cognitive, sensory and/or physical) have high rates of unemployment, therefore making it harder to live independently.
According to one of our graduates, “After I was diagnosed with my disability, I became so focused on my autism, that it wasn’t until I did Project SALT that I became aware of other people’s disabilities. I began to see a broader picture. I went from the ‘me’ to the ‘we’. I now not only advocate for myself, I advocate for others.”

The tree will be marked with an appropriate sign or plaque (perhaps a coral stone for poets to stand on) and we will work with local poets to have daily readings with which to delight people who seek poetry, and even those who simply wanted a photo at Mile Marker 0.

Baltimore, MD – Black Women, Food, and Power: A Libation For Sybby

My goal is to celebrate the legacy of highly skilled black women in American foodways who have been overlooked and stereotyped. The three-day programming will center around the 1 West Mansion exhibit at The Walters Art Museum. 1 West Mount Vernon Place is a Mansion in the Baltimore neighborhood of Mount Vernon that has been restored to its almost original condition in the mid-1800s. The events will specifically focus on the parlor, conservatory, and dining room areas of the home. These rooms share what is known about a woman named Sybby Grant. In the 1800s, Sybby was an enslaved servant working and residing at what is now the basement of “1 West”. She was a confident cook who could read and write (she wrote down all of the recipes she created) but was never allowed in the dining room of the mansion. After emancipation, she seemingly faded into history. Programming will be a 3 day honoring of women like Sybby Grant in American foodways of the past and present.
Day 1: Libation: Honoring Sybby
By Establishing 1 West not only as a historical site but also a sacred space we will pour Libation in remembrance of those whose stories have been lost by calling their names while simultaneously pouring water in their honor. After libation, drinks and small bites such as Turtle Soup (made with Sybby Grant’s handwritten recipes) will be passed around. An altar in honor of those enslaved at 1 West will be on display in the dining room. The altar will contain poems, flowers, candles, and hand-carved spoons and cutting boards. There will also be a looping sound piece in the dining room reflecting on the lost identity of enslaved people like Sybby.
Day 2: Black Women, Food, & Power with Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson
With food being a tool in the changing landscape of Baltimore, I feel the city as a whole could benefit from hearing the history and ideas tied to the roles black women have and could potentially play in shaping the food and hospitality industry.
Day 3: Jazz Listening Party

Orlando, FL – Lockhart Community History Mural

We are utilizing a history mural to revitalize an older, neglected historic part of Orange County. Lockhart has a rich history and the "bones" of the community are strong, with a vibrant commercial corridor, community service organizations, homeowner's groups, educational institutions and more. However, they haven't worked together on a project in a generation and the area is now blighted and residents discouraged.

We have hired a professional artist to paint a 123 ft. mural along Edgewater Drive - the main street of Lockhart. In fact, it is the oldest road connecting Apopka with Orlando, known as the "Old Dixie Hwy". We have enlisted students from 4 schools to paint, a dozen HOA's, civic groups and churches to supply volunteers, and local businesses to donate money and supplies. We have held collaborative meetings to engage the community with the content. I have sent letters, handwritten notes and personally visited every business along Edgewater Drive and other parts of Lockhart to raise needed funding.

We ran into a problem with a grant funding the repair of stucco on the wall and now need to raise an additional $3,500. We would need funding committed prior to December 31, 2019.

The community has embraced the history mural in everyway. I truly believe it will lead to the county and other investors financing and growing a true downtown Lockhart.

On a side note: Orange TV will be developing a time lapse video of the painting and a one-hour program about Orange County's smaller, older, forgotten communities. Many times residents just need to know others care and are willing to help them help themselves. The Lockhart program will be aired on Orange TV.

I hope you will be a part of this historic mural project on Edgewater Drive.

Louisville, KY (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Butterfly Effect Girls Club of Mercer County

I created this club in our local community approximately 5 mths ago, because I saw a real need for our young girls to have a space where they could gather. Many of the teens in our community feel invisble. I want our young girls to experience what many of us didn't have growing up. When I asked many of them what vision they hold for their future, most of them sadly admit that they are not very optimistic, as no one in the community - up until now - has been invested in their wellbeing. It is no secret that when our youth lack healthy outlets and guidance, they often resort to destructive behaviors. The Butterfly Effect Girls Club of Mercer County is seeking to change that. In addition to meeting with our young girls twice a month, I am also organizing a 3-day Rite of Passage Retreat for the 11 to 17 year old girls of our new club. During this Retreat, our Butterfly Effect girls are going to be challenged in many ways. For example, they will learn to:

(1) build a shelter from raw materials… (2) learn how to build a fire… (3) learn how to find their way using coordinates, a map and a compass… (4) learn basic auto maintenance... (5) learn how to cook healthy basic meals… (6) learn feminine self-care... (7) learn basic soap making skills … (8) domestic skills, and so many other important life skills that are often missing in our young girls as they enter the real world.

Through these tasks and challenges, they will also learn how to collaborate with each other, they will discover their inner strength and form important connections with other young women.

I want this experience to be totally FREE and am asking for YOUR support to make this possible. Your generosity will make it possible for them to experience an empowering and life changing event.

Fleurieu – Free fitness Mum's group

Our Group of ladies are committed to embracing, helping one another and getting together each week to support each other and spend time together, combining fitness as well.
As mums we run around after our children, getting them to sport and various after school activities, and it costs money. We had a team of mums at Seaford Calisthenics that enjoyed the sport too. However when it came to paying for their insurance and lessons for themselves, most mums had to give it up to be able to afford for their children to continue. At Seaford Calisthenics we had already booked the hall in advance for a year to coach this group of awesome mums. So we decided that we would run a free fitness mum group on any coin donation they could afford, to give back something to them.
As a not for profit club the hall costs us $20 per week. This adds up, so $1000 will go a long way to helping the mums keep the class running.

Ann Arbor, MI – Arcasōnica

My Name is Amelia Taylor. I am one of the founding members of ArcaSonica along with Alejandro Larumbe, a chamber collective in its 4th year that is committed to moving people to a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity through multi-sensorial music programs performing to audiences and communities who have few opportunities to live classical music.

ArcaSonica's 2019/20 season includes 3 concerts at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse presenting 3 cultures, (America, Mexico and New Zealand). These concerts present a unique approach to experience cultural diversity through music.

On April 24th 2019 ArcaSonica launched its first concert at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse. Our challenge was to enable the audience to imagine they were in New Zealand, hearing native bird calls, experience a typical Maori greeting, learn the basics of the Haka, and hear music of living NZ composers (female and male). They were also able to walk around the room looking at landscapes of NZ, the birds they were hearing and some Maori phrases that all kiwis use. The concert ended with NZ's national dish, the Pavlova.

The feedback from the audience exceeded our expectations. They can not wait for more.

We want to be able to create similar experiences in our next season.

Ypsilanti Freighthouse
Ypsilanti needs more live classical music. Depot town is a great place to be with lots of restaurants, bars, new cafes, live music (non-classical) and great historical venues like the Freighthouse. The only regular classical concerts are the youth orchestra and occasional concerts by the Eastern University. If you live in Ypsilanti you have to travel to Ann Arbor or Detroit for concerts. Ann Arbor is saturated with many different kinds of concerts, whereas the Ypsilanti community has the capacity to develop more concerts, and audience from Ann Arbor.

We are creating unique experiences to listen, and learn about new music from different cultures. This is why our project is awesome.

Los Angeles, CA – Science Buddies for LA's Homeless Children

Nearly 18,000 children in Los Angeles are homeless. They don’t worry about homework or after school activities; they worry about whether there will be a place at a shelter for them next month, so that they can have a roof over their heads for a little while. These children move from school to school, and very often they don’t even go to school. How can they fall in love with science? How can they even find it interesting or fun to do, if they don’t really experience it in school, with their peers? The Science Buddies for LA’s Homeless Children is designed to give children residing in Los Angeles’ homeless shelters a chance to see the wonders of science with the help of a community college buddy. Citrus College Physics students will design and conduct science workshops for the children residing at Cesar Chavez Homeless Shelter in Los Angeles. They will focus on the fun of science, but include educational aspects as well. For example, they will help the children build balloon-powered cars, while explaining to them the physics behind this project. In addition, the community college students will fundraise for the benefit of the children who will attend the workshops. The funds raised will be used to purchase backpacks and various school supplies that will be given to the children at the end of the workshop.

Liverpool (Ոչ ակտիվ) – ANTISTEEL

We are two young Liverpool artists aiming to curate a space to host and develop the next generation of local talent, manifesting in the form of a pop-up gallery in Liverpool for creatives aged 16-25 under the title ANTISTEEL.

We believe there is a space for a project like ANTISTEEL in Merseyside as the local art scene has a tendency to be inaccessible for those aged 16-25, and with operations and exhibitions being overwhelmingly behind closed doors. There is an overwhelming amount of young talent in Liverpool, and our work with ANTISTEEL is aiming to connect these individuals and promote young creatives within our community.

We work to support local creatives and small businesses within the city. Our ideas and aims for ANTISTEEL, are all centred around collaboration and providing a platform for creativity in Merseyside.

The pop-up event would include exhibiting exclusively the work of young people from the Liverpool area, ideally of an evening with performances from local poets and musicians alongside an exhibition of work.

Singapore – The Malays

As a young Malay Muslim man I am in the midst of an identity crisis. I am, like others of my generation, caught between upholding the much-loved traditions of my Malay heritage and embracing the Islam of Malaysia today. I am proposing a project that examines the impact of this growing dichotomy on my generation. As a continuation of my current work, I will focus on my generation values its heritage as we living in modern ages. What does it mean to be Orang Melayu?
According to the constitution of Malaysia, a person of Malay birth must observe Islam. It also states that, as a Malay, I must be fluent in the Malay language and practice Malay culture and traditions. In this, I am being told to be both a
good Muslim and a good Malay. However, the reality for my
generation is that this often creates a conflict. How am I to
balance those ideals? How will I carry my defining heritage
into the future? I began to photograph Malays in Peninsular Malaysia to better understand how the traditions and the religion exist side by side.
While making these images of community, it was apparent that religion and culture are intertwined as the constitution demands of us. Even though we were born and raised in this land, it is not easy for us to navigate the pressures of the modern world and continue to identify as Orang Melayu. For this proposed project, I will more closely examine the identity crisis of my generation, particularly the young men. The grant is an opportunity for me to spend time with and documenting my generation identity as I found out the identity is something that very organic, it will keep changing through time, The youth expose to so many influences and influences tend to change the identity

Adelaide – Christmas Lunch

Hi my friend puts on a Christmas Lunch for people in her own area... Chrisites beach...
She purchases, preps, cooks and serves the a nice wholesome lunch with desert, tea and coffee, soft drinks to the needy, lonely, homeless or lost souls. The Lunch is cooked and held in the local hall.

This awesome lady and her family also make hampers for her guests and she has a gift for each child that joins her table.

All funds come out of her personal hard earned cash. This year she say's she had to turn away about 25 people on the day that just turned up with the hope of being fed. it broke her heart.

Cooking Christmas lunch is really tricky even just for 6 people let alone 50! limited refrigeration, old hall ovens, you can imagine the challenges.

Would you kindly consider helping and making this year 2019's Christmas be even more awesome for this amazing lady and her family? lighten the load a little?

Oakland, CA (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Freewheel! A Bike Club for Girls and GNC Youth

Freewheel is a series of weekend bike rides for young women and gender non-conforming young people in high school that will explore significant places in the Bay, from the Ohlone ceremonial site at Planting Justice, an urban farm run by formerly incarcerated people, to the Rosie the Riveter Museum. The program culminates with a 5 day/4 night bike tour over Spring Break from Samuel P. Taylor State Park in Marin down the Pacific Coast to Half Moon Bay.

Freewheel is an opportunity to ride bikes in community, but it's also more than that - it's a chance to learn about what you can do when people believe in you, and when you believe in yourself.

It's a chance to learn about the people who've called the Bay Area home for thousands of years and to support indigenous efforts to reclaim their culture and rebuild their communities.

It's a chance to see first hand how people have built, polluted, cleaned up, revegetated, and reimagined the natural ecologies that surround us.

It's a chance to form the connections that come when you're exploring together, when you don't know what's around the next corner or if you'll make it up the next hill.

There will be up to 20 participants led by two bike educators from the California Field School. Freewheel rides happen the second Saturday of the month from 9 am - 1pm and are hosted by Life Academy, an Oakland public high school.

Birmingham, AL (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Colonel Clean

The name of our project is “Colonel Clean.”

We attend Woodlawn High School in eastern Birmingham, Alabama. We are a Title I School with lots of love and learning. We have a great principal, wonderful staff, and caring teachers. Many of the students at our school live below the poverty level. Many of us don’t have access to basic life necessities in our homes for different reasons.

Some years ago, the Alumni Association opened a closet to provide clothing, shoes, food, toiletries, and other necessities. The clothes are nice quality and trendy, but the problem is many of us don’t have a way to clean and/or keep them clean.

Having what you need for success and clean clothing promotes healthy self esteem and cuts down on bullying. Both elements promote an environment conducive to learning while keeping our peers in school and off the streets. When they are off the streets, they won’t go into the school to prison pipeline.

We envision adding a washer and dryer to the Colonel Closet. Students will have access to wash and dry their clothing before school, after school, and possibly on the weekend and during lunch based on need. Washing will be free of charge and laundry detergent will be donated.

Rotterdam – Tegen Tegels

A year ago, we started noticing the amount of unused grey space that covers our little square in Rotterdam Noord. This grey space, concrete street tiles, covered nearly every square meter, resulting in a monochromatic environment with little biodiversity. Because of this, we have started to take out large numbers of street tiles, creating areas that are now used to grow crops, flowers, and other vegetation. We have also added places to sit and started small scale art exhibitions, turning this neutral concrete square into a small urban oasis.

Since starting our guerilla gardening initiative, we have noticed an increase in the insect population, befriended our neighbors and of course spent quality time in our newly transformed square. This has been, so far, done on our own initiative and resources. We are now looking to increase our positive impact and provide an outdoor garden for all inhabitants of our square, so we will need to take this a step further.

We, therefore, aim to expand the garden beds we have created. These will be excavated and filled with healthy soil in order to provide for permanent vegetation and crops to grow. To ensure that the soil stays healthy, we will also build a communal compost bin. This will allow the neighbourhood to put their organic waste to use, previously impossible in this part of Rotterdam. The compost generated can then be used in the communal garden and the people their backyards, all adding to the biodiversity and livability of this urban jungle.

Marin, CA (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Peoples' Inter-Cities Fellowship Food Ministry

Approximately four to five years ago, we began to partner with Extra Foods in Marin in helping families get good quality food that would be thrown out by the store or where the store could not put food items on the shelves because of the food item nearing the end of the shelf life or there being some slight flaw with the food item. We were able to help get the food to families and individuals where many of the families and individuals did not have enough food to eat nor always enough money to purchase all that they needed at the grocery store. Our food ministry serves the sick and shut-in, homeless, low-income, elderly, underprivileged youth primarily in Marin City and the house boat community in Sausalito. Other cities in Marin County benefit from our food ministry as well such as San Rafael, Novato and other communities. The program serves approximately 150 families and individuals each week. We have been able to do this really efficiently and have been asked by other organizations to help them to fill the same need they are encountering in the population at large. One of the most important needs this food pantry fills is feeding the youth that get up in the morning with no breakfast. Leticia Jones, the founder of this food ministry was one of those youth growing up not always having enough food. The food ministry is her calling. Recently a woman took a bus from the East Bay to our pantry in Marin City because she heard that we could feed her. She was given two big bags of food and bus fare to get home.
Leticia Jones, Bridget Harris and Gloria Porter specifically, volunteer their time seven days a week to help organize the food pantry. Other members of the church also provide help and support weekly, The Food Ministry also provides emergency food to people on a weekly basis and this has been a tremendous benefit for families and individuals. While we had no idea as a church that the program would grow as it has, we are thankful to be able to do our part.

North Minneapolis, MN – Quiet Power Yoga

Thomas has made free yoga instruction/practice accessible to residents of North Minneapolis by offering free trauma informed classes to teens and more recently their parents in Heritage Park community space. Building on the health and wellness established in the Heritage Park community by Green Garden Bakery, a local youth-led urban gardening bakery, the community enthusiasm has exceeded expectations.

My long term goal is to launch Quiet Storm Yoga, community classes geared towards ages 30+ that include mindfulness practice guided with soul, Blues, Funk, Rnb, and Jazz. Creating an atmosphere with music that resonates with the African-American adults and the emerging seniors in the community to promote healthy living. This project would develop inclusive ways to make mindfulness practice inviting for Black Communities while address trauma and routes for personal healing and building community.

State College, PA – Celebrating the Voices of Low-Income Older Adults

Being Heard is a poetry writing program that celebrates the voices, stories, and imaginations of low-income older adults in Centre County. Meeting for 12 weeks each fall at Centre Crest Nursing Home in Bellefonte, Being Heard is designed especially for low-income adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. Participants write collaboratively, share stories, study the techniques of poetry together, and put their minds to everything from farmhouses, chickadees, city streets, and the night sky to questions about heaven and death, immigration and American identity, disability and deity, art and love.

The program culminates with a public reading and celebration of work created during the semester, which doubles as a book- and broadside-release party. This soulful event is attended by Centre Crest residents; families and friends; local elected officials; and the wider arts language arts community.

Being Heard aims to do three things: 1) To empower participants to think of themselves as people with valued voices in their community who have creative agency and knowledge of poetry craft; 2) to foster social connectedness and a vehicle for communicating with others in creative ways; and 3) to foster awareness and respect in our community for the creative energies of older adults. We achieve the first two goals throughout the course of the program itself, as participants grow to identify as poets and to feel deeply heard. The last goal, which involves lifting up program participants’ voices in the community and sharing widely the fruits of the program, is the one we currently need help from the Awesome Foundation to reach.

Washington, DC – “What’s in a Wag?: Decoding Dog Talk in DC”

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen two dog owners conversing over coffee at a dog park in blissful ignorance while their canine charges are about to go full metal on each other. That’s because most humans are not in tune to the subtleties of dogs’ language -- NOT ALL TAIL WAGS ARE CREATED EQUAL. Being armed with even a basic understanding of dog behavior could reduce the stress on the animals and increase their quality of life (always a challenge for city pets!), and help to avoid complications and confrontations with neighbors and other members of the community.

I study the co-evolution of humans and dogs, with a focus on social learning and nonverbal communication. I am working toward a PhD in the field (aka I’m a broke student), with the ultimate goals of a) continuing research; b) working directly with detection and service dogs; and c) educating the public about successful human-animal interactions. This project would be a big step toward achieving goals for the latter.

Part I: “Decoding Dog Talk” will comprise a series of pop-up “Tail Talk” tables at dog parks across the city (at least one in each ward), where I provide people with free information, diagrams and mini-demos to help them get a grasp on basic principles of dog behavior. The tables will also include a survey for participants to fill out, ranking their familiarity with various behavioral cues and asking questions. I volunteer with the Humane Rescue Alliance and would like to work with HRA or another local rescue group (City Dogs, Rural Dog Rescue, Lucky Dog Rescue) to help give them publicity while I am hosting my behavior tables, and to point owners to for more in-depth behavior classes and support, if needed.

Part II: The second element of the project will be the creation of a website to refer participants to for additional information, and where they can see how what they’ve learned compares to what people in the community think and know (based on survey results).

Disability – Disability Justice Institute

The Disability Justice Institute is a day-long series of workshops, panels, and conversations about disabled LGBTQ+ folks for us. The institute will be held on the second day Creating Change Conference in Dallas, TX in January 2020. There is no line between disabled activists and queer activists; we exist in both worlds. Ableism and inaccessibility keep disabled queer people out of organizing and out of queer spaces in general. Disabled queer people have led movements only to be left to the side when we’re inconvenient. Abled and straight cisgender allies should attend to gain a better understanding of ableism in our community and how to make queer spaces accessible and welcoming, but ultimately it is a space for disabled LGBTQ+ people. Disabled folks should attend to both commiserate and learn about experiences different from their own. Above all else, it is for disabled queer folks to tell their stories and engage with one another.

<b>What our grantee is saying:</b> "This grant means everything to me. It’ll allow me to move forward with the Disability Justice Institute as I’ve envisioned it—a space for queer and disabled activists to share their stories and strengthen their advocacy work. This is a chance to collaborate and learn in a way that’s very rarely afforded to us as disabled queer people."

Alaska (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Opening a bicycle collective in Sitka, Alaska

The goals of the Sitka Bicycle Collective are to 1) increase access to safe, affordable refurbished bicycles 2) provide cycling education opportunities in our community 3) collectively advocate for infrastructure & policies that make cycling safer and more accessible ¬4) encourage cycling as a healthy, affordable means of transportation & exercise.

Many people in Sitka are riding unsafe & damaged bicycles, and there is currently no place to purchase used bikes at any kind of scale. We are located on a remote island where the cost of living is very high and purchasing a new bicycle is expensive & carbon intensive due to shipping. At the collective, we plan to refurbish used bicycles and make them available for sale. We will also donate used bikes to people who are inhibited by cost from obtaining a safe bicycle. We believe that part of building a stronger cycling community in Sitka will involve creating an outlet for people to come together and advocate the needs of cyclists. It also involves helping others to have more agency over maintaining their bicycles. The collective will offer educational workshops as well as the opportunity for Sitkans to learn bicycle maintenance through volunteering.

Last month, two instructors from the Susitna Bicycle Institute Anchorage came to Sitka and gave a 40-hour training to 5 mechanics who will be involved with running the bicycle collective. They also donated over $1,100 in basic tools to help get us off the ground. We rented a space for one year at the Hames Center, a community wellness nonprofit that is helping to incubate our program. We are currently in the process of setting up our bike collective shop. Although we have many of the basic tools we need to get started as well as 10-15 donated used bikes, we are seeking funding to help cover startup costs for the space and purchasing more advanced tools, as well as parts we need to refurbish bikes until we are able to generate an income to keep the program sustainable.

San Antonio, TX – Be a PAL

ALA Serves/ Be a PAL program is a Service-Learning Team that will create youth leadership opportunities to encourage civic engagement to make a positive impact in our world. This initiative will have many layers in creating social-emotional learning activities to build an introspective dialogue within our school community addressing bullying, character education, tutoring, and mentoring. Students will learn about themselves and be empowered to lead community projects throughout the year. We will be working with a growth mindset using positive psychology to strengthen each person’s resilience and build on their strengths while addressing their weaknesses. ALA Service Team will build community. We seek to be actively involved in civic engagement and to be leaders in our city to make changes that will resonate in our school, in our district, and in our city. The students will also learn how to use social media in positive ways to communicate and create campaigns to increase awareness on a larger scale. We will accomplish this by having workshops with activities to promote awareness, inspiration, and teambuilding. We must first seek to understand our purpose to then understand the issues surrounding us. The workshops will be based on the PAL® Peer Assistance and Leadership program (https://www.palusa.org). This program is dedicated to using the “potential of youth to make a difference in their lives, schools, and communities.” It is a program that understands that youth need to be encouraged and supported while being empowered to be tutors and mentors to serve others. Along with the PAL® Peer Assistance and Leadership program, the students will serve the city of San Antonio with a least one monthly service project.

Gloucester, MA – Dogtown Writers Festival Student Scholarships

This fall, the Gloucester Writers Center will present the first Dogtown Writers Festival - a weekend of workshops, panel discussions, and speaking events that explore our personal connections between the "geography of our being," and the places in which we live, work, and create. The Dogtown Writers Festival will celebrate what Gloucester's poet Vincent Ferrini referred to as the "Holy Local," a lens through which we look at the world.

Gloucester is the center of rich literary and cultural history. This is why it is so important for our community to encourage the practice and the art of writing as a means of civic engagement among our younger citizens. For this reason, we have included, in the festival, a workshop for young people only, to inspire in our next generation creativity, stewardship of our local culture and history, and a unique civic pride in our community. Gloucester Writers Center is asking Awesome Gloucester to underwrite the ticket cost for ten local students, ranging in age from 14 to 18, who might otherwise not be able to afford to attend this event.

Acclaimed poet and professor, Dorothy Shubow Nelson, will lead the student workshop titled Somewhere Near in Your World. Think of this workshop as a jam session with words, a chance to compose poems, songs, stories, letters. An opportunity to try out other ways of writing. Published prose and poetry will be passed around. There will be conversations about the music of writing. Students will be invited to read from their work in a welcoming atmosphere, and their words will bounce off each other.

By closing time, our young community members will have come to know one another and will have made new connections with their home terrain: the city with its history and festivals, the rugged coastline, the sounds in the Dogtown woods, the beaches of fun and exploration, the mighty ocean, the multitude of working and pleasure boats, the many jeweled colors in the quarry granite, and, significantly, how the

Utrecht – Utrechtse stadsvis

-For English scroll down-

-english-
Not everyone in Utrecht realizes it but we have a serious river in our town. Our canal is not just a bunch of water but it is the connection between the river De Vegt and the river De Kromme Rijn. A river full of life! And the place to be for a special fish; the convolvulus. Every spring this river fish migrates throught the canals of Utrecht to find a place to spawn. To make this part of nature more visible for by-passers Mark will place steel fish at a place where the water level regularly receeds. These silhouettes will rise above water to raise awareness about this part of nature running through Utrecht

Kingston – Mobile Public Pizza and Bread Oven

What does an outdoor wood-fired communal oven have to do with a strip of land north of Concession Street?

Started ten years ago on vacant land in the Kingscourt neighbourhood, Oak Street Community Garden has evolved into much more than a place to grow vegetables. Here people from diverse backgrounds and classes share gardening advice and form friendships. There are work teams, educational workshops, communal meals and a harvest festival. The most recent project is to plant fruit trees and other food-producing plants together in a “food forest,” where anyone passing by can pick an apple or some pears.

In this time of climate emergency, when our food often gets trucked thousands of miles from giant farms, and where many people in our cities don’t know where their next meal is coming from, knowing how to grow and access healthy local food becomes really important. And in this time of social media and virtual reality, people need to find ways to get their hands dirty and have real, face-to-face contact with others.

Adding a communal oven to the garden will be an important step toward these goals. We know from many examples around the world that an outdoor public oven is a “story magnet.” The combination of flames, good food and sunlight becomes a crucible for sociability.

Clarke and Tim built the oven over the spring and summer. The rocket stove heat source is extremely efficient. It uses very little wood to get up to pizza-appropriate temperatures and burns cleanly, so there is very little carbon emitted into the atmosphere.

Despite the fact that many of the materials where donated, the oven still cost Tim and Clarke over $900. That means we’re going to need to make that money back through donations and other revenue streams over the next few months. What we would love to be able to do is not have to ask the garden for “rent” on the oven when used for garden events, or ask eaters to donate cash “by the slice.”

Sarnia (Ոչ ակտիվ) – Stolen Childhood

PANDAS/PANS Ontario, a non profit organization founded in Sarnia, ON five years ago, is planning an educational and awareness evening for PANDAS/PANS Awareness Day on October 10th, 2019.

The event is being presented by PANDAS/PANS Ontario and local business entrepreneurs Tyler and Ashely Smith of The Woods Hair Salon. It will also involve other local volunteers who's children are affected by PANDAS and other local organizaitons/individuals volunteering to help make the event a success.

We will be screening an award winning documentary created by Toronto filmmakers and members of PANDAS/PANS Ontario that not only educates the public about this growing and concerning autoimmune condition that is often missed and/or misdiagnosed but also highlights the difficult journey so many of the families must take on the road to diagnosis and recovery.

A reception with local food, entertainment and silent auction will precede the event and a Q and A with film cast members (featuring Ontario's leading Pandas/Pans medical specialist) and the film's producers will follow the film.

Local families living through this journey desire more acceptance and knowledgeable support from our community members for the sake of their children and our children's agencies and medical organizations in Sarnia-Lambton are eager to learn more about how to best help these families. We hope this event will be a good step forward for PANDAS/PANS in Sarnia-Lambton.

Miami, FL – EdIble Zine Fair.

EXILE would like to program an event that will merge food and print culture. This Edible Zine Fair will be engaging, participatory, free and open to all.

A zine is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines are small DIY publications that are easy to produce, accessible, and democratic. Anyone can make a zine! There are zines about every subject under the sun from fanzines about music and dogs, to zines about climate change, the color gold, vegan cooking, gay identity, body positivity, and bikes.

Between 40-50 artists will participate in the first ever Edible Zine Fair! Each table will feature zines that are focused on food but span a wide range of topics. This zine fair will explore culinary delights and tropical fruits as well as issues concerning food consumption, cooking, labor practice, recipes, ingredients and history.

The audience is invited to touch, smell, and in some cases even taste the zines! Artists will trade, sell, and share their zines with each other and are asked to provide a recipe page for the collaborative fair zine which is given away to attendees. Fair goers can collect these pages from each table and build a special recipe book, which EXILE will bind together on site.

University of Miami’s Special Collections will provide an exhibition displaying the history of food focused zines and there will be several activations throughout the day. Local food trucks and restaurants will be invited as vendors.
