My goal is to increase clean, sustainable drinking water access at Lincoln Elementary by implementing 3 Water Bottle Filling Stations within the school. As the chairman of the health & wellness committee, we try to host increased water intake challenges and the lack of a bottle filling station hinders our staff and our students from drinking as much water as they should. Benefits of having water bottle filling stations at Lincoln Elementary: Quick and easy way to fill up reusable bottles – no more awkward bottle fills. Less money spent on bottled water means extra cash. Filtered water assures water is clean and healthy to drink. Easier way to be eco-friendly Water is a precious resource. The student body can be part of solution as opposed to problem. More hydration = better mental performance.

School Startup works with teachers across disciplines in a design process modeled after the startup industry. In the startup world, accelerators and incubators accept applicants with good business ideas that have potential, then provide mentorship, support, resources, and opportunities through an intensive program centered around human-centered design. School Startup is an educator accelerator, modeled in a similar fashion as startup culture, but for teachers who have innovative ideas pertaining to deeper learning and classroom practice. School Startup applies entrepreneurial philosophy to professional growth for teachers by engaging teachers as instructional leaders inside a school context and applying a design process to cohorts of cross-discipline teachers who work on individual classroom-based deeper learning projects. During the 2017-18 school year, 8 teachers from Fern Creek High School formed the first School Startup cohort. These teachers have completed the following activities, among others-- -Met regularly with instructional coach, Ashley Lamb-Sinclair-a former Kentucky teacher of the year-to plan and implement a startup cycle (Disrupt-Discover-Seed-Build-Break-Bridge-Demo) -Shadowed and interview students to understand barriers to student engagement -Tested out mini-projects that were inspired by student input and supported by the instructional coach -Shared initial results through a WDRB news feature, website (http://www.schoolstartup.org/), and partnerships with community organizations -Presented at a local chapter of a national conference, ECET2 (Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teachers and Teaching) -Will present at a national conference in San Diego called Deeper Learning at world-renowned high school, High Tech High. Of 140 proposals, 50 were selected, including School Startup.

The LLCEC is a week-long intensive college/career preparation and leadership development program designed for rising juniors and seniors in high school that takes place every summer in July with follow-up activities throughout the school year. Open to all, the LLCEC specializes in providing intentional support, resources and programing for Latinx, immigrant, and refugee first-generation college students. Students attend mock college classes and college/career planning sessions each day and engage in peer mentorship through “Familia” meetings and Nation Games during which discussion about important topics such as Creative Resistance, Anti-Blackness in the Latinx Community, Gender Identity, Toxic Masculinity/Machismo, Healthy Relationships and Self-Care takes place. Each evening includes culturally responsive keynote speakers or performers. The camp provides a theme for each day connecting to the overall program goal of youth leadership and engagement in meaningful educational and career development. The LLCEC also includes amazing social justice project classes that help particpants develop existing artistic skills or practice new ones while they learn about social justice movements and cultural organizing skills as a strategy for shifting consciousness. Through classes focusing on murals, zine making, beat production, sewing, knitting, poetry, podcast production, baile folclorico and mixtape making, the social justice courses are designed to connect creative outlets to the pursuit of social justice and supporting youth leadership through artistic expression. Additionally, the courses provide a space for students to learn self-care through the arts as a means to tell their stories, heal from past/current traumas, and empower self-affirmation through a completed production or a new skill rooted lifelong artistic development. At the end of the week, students have a clearer vision for who they are and who they want to become.

On June 21st, thousands of people across the nation will be banding together to support the health, education, and financial well-being of every person in every community. This "Day of Action" is a reminder that when we come together to support the greater good, every day is a day of action. This year's Day of Action will be hosted by Home of New Vision's Sport, Lawn, and Garden Project's committee, and we will focus on improving the lives of our clients in the New Recovery Residence! Exercise can increase wellbeing and release endorphins, making it a useful long-term strategy to combat substance abuse and decrease the risk of relapse. Our Sport, Lawn, and Garden (SLAG) Project provides our clients in the Residential Treatment Program with fun and rewarding activities. Our goal is to help our clients replace their bad hobbies and habits with good ones! This year we will be joining up with United Way, Volunteers, and other community members to implement the SLAG project. We will be fixing up the yard, installing a walking path, starting the garden, and setting up the sports/lawn/harden activities for the clients.

The more top of mind something is, say the art museum or local park, the more likely someone is going to get out and participate in it. The model is completely scalable as we are pairing with local community activists to decide which items to make into emojis. There is also an opportunity to work alongside organizations to create organization-specific sets. Each icon takes approximately $4 to make and we're hoping to expand by offering each keyboard for a small cost in which a portion of the cost is given back to the community.

Smoketown Family Wellness Center (SFWC) will provide several opportunities for community fellowship in Smoketown. Based on our community-informed model, we will respond to the desires of Smoketown residents in regards to desired programming and community collaborations. Our facility includes a teaching kitchen to inspire healthy meal preparation for children and families, a literacy corner to encourage parent-child engaged reading, exam rooms and a multipurpose space designed to support parents in building a culture of physical, mental and emotional wellness for their families. The “Movie-in’ On Up!” Project encourages community members and partners to come together in order to present movies, documentaries, and presentations that foster cultural enrichment and robust discussions focusing on community wellness. The project is in direct response to community request for more positive environments for youth. The project title, “Movie-in’ On Up!” is a play on the theme song, “Movin’ On Up” from an old sitcom, The Jeffersons. The song speaks of the matriculation of a family moving from one side of town to another—the more affluent side . . . the side with more provisions. The song distinctly captures the idea of attainment. The focus of the “Movie-in’ On Up!” Project is to evoke dialogue around the idea of “finally [having] a piece of the pie.” We want to encourage conversation about creating a culture of health and wellness within the community while exploring the various opportunities that abound as well as the issues that percolate as a result of societal conditions. We are partnering with other local organizations such as the Academy of Music Production Education and Development (A.M.P.E.D.), Steam Exchange, and ArtsReach to encourage youth involvement. The documentary, Resilience, will be one of our first viewings offered to the community for the proposed project. The MAYA Collection is a collection of Nepali refugees in Louisville, KY, who utilize their God given abilities to create unique jewelry, handmade crafts, soaps, and various textile products. MAYA means “love” in the Nepali language. Through this business, the artisans have an opportunity to become financially independent and share their love of created beautiful, wearable art. A refugee is someone who has had to flee his or her home country because of danger of persecution based on his or her race, religion, or nationality. Typically, a person is in a refugee camp for several years before they are resettled to another country. Louisville has a large refugee population, even though it is a relatively small city. Refugees in America struggle due to a lack of formal education and job experience, as well as the challenge of learning English. Beyond that, they often miss their home country and their families very much. Although there may be other refugees from the same country nearby, many refugees are seeking community and friendship once they arrive in their new location. MAYA Collection began in 2009 when a few of the current volunteers met refugee women in the south end of Louisville and saw their desire for relationships with Americans. The refugee women expressed an interest in learning about the Bible so a weekly Bible study began. The economy was sluggish so the volunteer team decided to try to make some products to sell. The refugees knew how to knit so the first products sold were knitted scarves, and MAYA Collection began. It is 8 years later and the ministry has touched the lives of over 80 refugee women and children. MAYA is led by a team of volunteers who share a Bible story, lead small group times, and also assist the ladies with the various craft projects. The goal for MAYA Collection is for refugee women to have the skills to become independent local artisans.

I have always been drawn to helping the homeless community but really never knew how to get deeply involved. One day I was asked what my dream project would be in my own community and out came the vision of Home Street Music. I wanted to bring music workshops & classes to the homeless community in order to help build community, restore confidence, reclaim dignity and empower individuals who have experienced homelessness. Since beginning this journey, I have realized just how much hard work and dedication is required of me in order to really see this dream through. I will say that I want nothing to get in the way of me sticking with this. I have seen huge transformations take place just in the 16 weeks that I have been holding music circles with people who have been homeless for most of their lives. Their radiance, confidence, joy, and creativity has exploded before my eyes and I feel so sure that I am doing exactly what I need to do right now. Every week, we meet up at a wonderful place called Community First! Village in East Austin. We gather in a circle and chat about life while we settle in. Then once everyone is there, we begin our creative exercise for the day. This changes, but often involves writing, singing, playing together, and sharing. We always have a musical jam and then a closing song. Through these simple creative exercises, people feel comfortable sharing what is inside of them, and they begin to realize just how creative they truly are. I believe that we are all born creative beings, but somewhere along the way, we lose that ability to identify as artists. I hope that through these music circles, each person who comes gets more in touch with their innate creativity. In the two pilot sessions, which have totaled 16 weeks, we have seen so many songs written, heard amazing poetry, and witnessed extremely shy and/or traumatized individuals able to share and eventually laugh together and know they are supported in this journey - all through music.

Alaska (Non-active) – Housing and Homeless Coalition

We are the Housing and Homeless Coalition in Fairbanks, Alaska. We are the center of all agencies in town. We work with many other Non-Profits in the area, to help and stop homelessness. Just recently we got a grant for a program called Rapid Re-Housing. Rapid Re-Housing (RRH) is for people with short-term barriers to housing. RRH clients are generally in the program less than one year and Nationally 84% of RRH clients achieve independence and are never again homeless. The Rapid Re-Housing grant we got was a big deal but also a big win! There are many things to come, Like in May we are doing a Panel Discussion talking about homelessness, how other agencies help and try to prevent homeless also what services they offer. We are planning other great events for the year but will need more funding as that time comes. Now its time to move on to our next project which we will have a few coming up this summer! Next month on May 4th we are doing a community panel discussion talking about homeless. We will also have 15 other agencies at the event to talk about what they are doing to help and stop homelessness and also talk about what resources they offer and can help with. But after this event, we will have many more to attend and also create ourselves. In July we will be helping with a big resource fair, We also have many more ideas for events this coming year which should and will have a big impact on Fairbanks Alaska. Later this year we are going to do another huge Symposium talking about homelessness, unemployment, Housing and much more! funding from The Awesome Foundation could even help with that. We don't really do just one thing we do a lot of things in our community with other agencies and also to help the people in our community and make those who aren't aware more aware on how they can help and make a difference. This coming year is going to fill with greatness and amazing things, with the help of The Awesome Foundation we will be able to achieve these goals.

About the project: Welcome to PAL (People Against Litter)! Our mission is a clean Gloucester. We believe that Gloucester citizens can make their city clean if they have the knowledge, tools, and support to accomplish that goal. PAL is going to be the resource Gloucester citizens can turn to when looking for knowledge, tools and support in their efforts to help make Gloucester a clean city. The three points of interaction established for PAL include the following: 1. KNOWLEDGE: Interactive float for the Horribles and St Peter’s Fiesta parades. This will be PAL’s initial marketing effort and introduction of the PAL project to the citizens of Gloucester. Float participants will be dressed as elements that are affected by litter (plants, animals, birds, fish, etc). We will distribute beautiful magnets and yellow litter bags and encourage parade spectators to sign up to be a PAL. 2. TOOLS: Yellow bags for litter collection. Provided by the city, the bags will be distributed to PAL volunteers that have signed up to help with the clean-up of public areas. We will also distribute bags at city events and other occasions where we can engage a conversation about the PAL program. 3. SUPPORT: Web site. The site will feature a map of the five Gloucester Wards with “pins” marking where volunteer PALs have accepted responsibility for the cleanliness of that area. We will use this site to encourage, educate, empower, and engage the citizens of Gloucester through blogs, fact pages, interactive conversations, and a digital reward system.

It has become more and more evident to me with conversations and doing a little research that good neighbors provide the answers to a lot of common community problems. The isolation of our era with being inside and online, stuck to our virtual world instead of sharing deeply with those next door is overwhelming. But when it comes to meeting neighbors people tend to feel awkward. It feels like your trying too hard if you go over with cookies more than once. My proposal is to use this grant to create almost a mini grant for multiple communities within Centre County. We could buy 8 or 9 new picnic tables with $1000 and give them away to people who commit to hosting a block party for their neighbors this summer. We could also paint them to stand out and show that they were gifted through Meet at the Trailhead to raise more awareness for opportunity to do fun and cool stuff throughout the community!

Sydney – Collarenebri sporting Leadership Project

The Aim of this project is to provide the youth and community leaders (17 to 50 yrs old) of Collarenebri with a program that combines health, fitness, skill building and community development through positive leadership and mentoring. We are currently endeavouring to enter the ‘Collarenebri Men’s Team’ in the 2018 NSW Indigenous Rugby League KO Carnival. This event attracts over 120 teams from across the state contesting in the U’15, U’17, Women and Men competitions. It is attended by more than 50,000 spectators and is televised, with much more coverage relayed back to urban, regional and isolated communities through newspapers and social media. The hard work of our volunteers has led to on-field success. We have had several players selected to play for the County Rugby League Group and Representative teams. In 2018 our team will have the luxury of 2 former NRL players joining our ranks. We are hoping that they will bring experience to our team and act as mentors for our younger players. In addition to this, our playing squad and training staff will be involved in a variety of other activities including fitness, first aid, sport strapping (PE Teacher), healthy eating and living (Aboriginal Medical service), event management, administration, community development etc (Colly Gamilaraay), emotional well-being (Elders/Community Leaders). It is envisaged that through the knowledge and skills gained, the Youth and Men of Collarenebri will be fit,healthy and capable of organizing, managing and participating in future events. There are however many expenses connected with participating in the Indigenous KO and we rely for funding solely on our own fundraising events and the support of the community. As Collarenebri is an isolated community, our funding opportunities are very limited. The major expense for competing in the Annual KO Carnival is Uniforms, Team Entry Fee, Tournament Nomination Fee. _Imagine a society where our collective intelligence is assisted by artificial intelligence to help make consensus-based decisions that protect minority rights, and have everyone leave the table with the feeling of being treated fairly. The opportunities generated by new technologies continue to change popular expectations and create opportunities for true participation in democracy—a vision of a fully accountable, collaborative, and effective government. Taiwan has been experimenting with future democracy for decades—at first just in academic circles, and now, after the 2014 Sunflower Movement (their “Occupy”), in a variety of open governance projects, across all sections of Taiwan society. One of their main methods is the award-winning vTaiwan open consultation process that brings Taiwan citizens and government together to craft country-wide digital legislation._ _Our project is to bring Audrey Tang, Taiwan’s Digital Minister and 3 members of the Public Digital Innovation and Service team (PDIS) team that trains facilitators to run the facilitator training class that Taiwanese public servants rate “99% effective”, to New York City on June 11 & 12. Together, we will train a cohort of 30 NYC government officials, community organizers and academics in the vTaiwan methods of facilitation and consensus building. This multi-day training event will also be an occasion to celebrate and share facilitation traditions from diverse fields including governance, law, urban planning, and further grow the community of practice around the vTaiwan process for crafting legislation, which includes simultaneous facilitation for in-person & remote stakeholder meetings, structured conversation, and math-assisted consensus building. We plan to film the entire training event and publish under a share-alike license, to be widely circulated._ AwesomeNYC is excited to support this project and specifically the efforts to record these sessions to help spread the vTaiwan process to more of the world. Crediamo moltissimo nel bike sharing come risposta ai problemi di mobilità e anche di inquinamento nelle nostre città europee ed è anche per questo che vogliamo contrastare questo fenomeno di vandalizzazione. Portland, OR – Handmade Stories

In this fast-paced age of technology we lose touch with all the ways our hands can communicate. Things we can do with our hands: laying a foundation, growing food, touching another human… are rarely prioritized or valued. But our hands are full of stories and are longing to help us express ourselves and connect with each other. I have always loved drawing – as a way to slow down, see clearly, and start conversation; and so I propose: 30 trips across Portland to draw 30 sets of hands that tell 30 different stories. On a blank postcard I will draw each person’s hands in action. The back of each card will hold a unique question to prompt their story: What do you hope your hands will get to do one day? What have you fought for with your hands? What do only your hands know how to do? I will invite participants to write a response on the card and their mailing address on a separate sheet. In the end, all cards and addresses will get shuffled up so that every person receives the anonymous hands and short story of a fellow Portlander. But before these cards hit the mail, they will inspire 5 pop-up parties in parks in each quadrant of PDX. 30 original pieces of art will hang from ribbon strung between trees. People passing by will get to do more than just look. Using scans of the original drawings, I will create a collage graphic to produce a printed postcard. Everyone will be invited to pick a question and write their own story on the back of these cards – which will also go into the mailing mix. In Bellingham, I did a beta version of this project – resulting in the drawing samples attached. As I drew people’s hands we chatted and I learned wacky, sad, uplifting tales. This proposal continues the focus on hands as a source of connection but expands the participation across the city of Portland. This local project has the potential to get totally out of hand, launching a national experiment in which I travel across the country extending the web of handmade conversations

Disability – Bringing Inclusive Dance to St. Paul

St. Paul and District Arts Foundation has recently recognized the need to further integrate their programming, in particular their dance programming. To do this, they approached Solidance Inclusive Recreation about running two workshops to bring integrated dance to the community in St. Paul. Integrated dance explores the creative possibilities of moving in a space that is friendly to all abilities. The two workshop are a a community workshop introducing the disability community and their friends and family to integrated dance and a workshop for instructors with the St. Paul and District Arts Foundation to introduce them to the basics of inclusive, accessible arts instruction. What our grantee is saying: "The grant will mean that we can take on a project that is near and dear to our hearts - exposing more people to the joys of inclusive dance. This would not happen without the support of the Awesome Disability Foundation." What our trustees are saying: "I voted for this project because I believe that the $1,000 in funding will be implemented to scale - meaning they can pull it off for the money and it is providing a direct series of experiences to multiple recipients in their community. I think it is an effective use of $1,000 to enhance the lives of people with disabilities."

Washington, DC – The Shape Up: The Barbershop Talk Series

Starting With Today (SWT) has partnered with a local DC barber shop to host group counseling sessions and will seek to expand services over the coming months. The familiarity and comfort of barbershop as a community pillar serves as the gateway to strengthen the therapeutic services that organically take place there by providing structure and a licensed therapist to illuminate practical next steps. These group counseling sessions are and will continue to be moderated by a licensed therapist, take place 1-2 times a month, and will tentatively run through early December 2018. These mostly male-focused sessions at a barbershop are designed to collectively explore identity, emotional intelligence, identify and learn healthy coping strategies for stress, anxiety, and depression in an otherwise overlooked community. Each session has to potential to reach over 50 people, many of whom are being introduced to therapy for the first time. These sessions reduce the access gap by providing the service free to attendees at a location they already frequent with culturally competent and fun programming.

'Rise Up' is a pilot program for an acting class at Mobilong Prison in Murray Bridge, South Australia. A 10-week trial has been approved by the prison which should begin in July 2018. The aims of this pilot are to work with prisoners to develop their artistic and creative potential through the provision of education and training in the performing arts which includes writing, reading, speaking, acting and performing in order to contribute to rehabilitation outcomes and prisoner health and well-being. Drama therapy is action oriented and therefore allows participants to act out negative behaviours safely and consider their harmful impact in a more concrete way than traditional treatment approaches, without consequences. Participants are urged not to rationalise or deny negative or unhealthy thoughts; rather, through the dramatic process, they are challenged to face their issues directly and truthfully. Through this program clients will have the opportunity to practice new skills, and to imagine and take on new roles, such as a sober self or a working self. In addition, techniques such as roleplay and improvisation offer clients a new perspective on their behaviours, choices, and relationships. Clients explore and develop their strengths through theatrical techniques that offer the distance necessary to process their actions without feeling overwhelmed.

Synopsis: IN STITCHES follows three trailblazing South African comedians who are bringing their mother tongues to the stage. More than two decades after the fall of apartheid, 11 official languages thrive in South Africa. Despite this, English continues to dominate the comedy scene. Sixty percent of the population cannot understand a word. Vernacular comedians like Noko Moswete, Zicco Sithole, and Luphelo Kodwa are flipping the script. Addressing the long-ignored South African majority, these artists are decolonizing and democratizing comedy. Audiences are hooked. Vernac shows buzz with unparalleled energy, somewhere between a rock concert and a sermon. Never before have black South African audiences shared such powerful catharsis, led by magnetic comedians who look and sound like them. If laughter is the best medicine, these artists act as guerilla medics, using humor to tend to the untreated masses. Why it matters: Documentaries about Africa often center on the continent’s most tragic people confronting its most tragic challenges. These are important stories to tell, but the sheer number of these disheartening films is misleading and misrepresentative. We are not making that kind of movie. Though IN STITCHES addresses historical trauma and personal hardship, it is ultimately an uplifting tale about the power of comedy, focusing on characters with agency. In the age of Trump’s “shithole countries,” audiences need to hear stories that increase empathy and global awareness, narratives that encourage people to open their minds—and hearts—to new perspectives. The Underground Arts Society is a weekly event taking place in the Jacaranda that will showcase a different art form every week. The aim is to pull artists from each corner of the industry together to share ideas, create new work and support one another. The event will showcase local talent in theatre, music, comedy, art, poetry, film and much more. By either working with local companies or by creating bespoke events ourselves we will curate a collection of events that celebrate the buzzing underground arts community in this city. We launched the event three weeks ago hosting a mixer and inviting local creatives to join us for an evening of live entertainment. We had artists selling their work, live poetry and music and some actors roaming the space in character. We have already scheduled three months worth of events including an all female open mic night called 'We Want Women' that celebrates and supports aspiring female performance artists of all ages and backgrounds. An art event called 'Sketchy' that brings together local fine artists who are all given the opportunity to sketch one another whilst networking and sharing ideas and advice. We're putting together our own comedy and poetry nights that will showcase raw talent and offer a platform to those who have never before had one. We have reached out to already established local companies like 'Impropriety', 'The Comedy Trust', 'The Rubbish Shakespeare Company', 'All Things Considered' and many more to bring in their expertise and put together a night of entertainment in their own style. Held in the basement of a nightclub, the two aims are to provide an evening of high quality artistic entertainment outside of traditional theatre venues; and to create a pool of diverse artists who, throughout the weeks, network and start those conversations about forming working relationships. Een laagdrempelige manier om elkaar te ontmoeten en elkaars cultuur te leren kennen. Creativiteit maakt nieuwsgierig, laat je innovatief denken en creëert zelfvertrouwen. She is an online platform that connects law students with disadvantaged clients to provide them with FREE legal advice. ANIKA partners with law schools, offering students practical legal training. This is sent to our ANIKA lawyers who review, amend and send the advice directly to the client. Students gains real-world and tech experience and clients receive fast and free legal advice. Run SA Youth is a non-profit youth organization that provides incentivized workout programs to kids in underserved parts of San Antonio. Our programs are free, accessible and currently based out of Kennedy Park (78226). The primarily running-based programs consist of 2-3x weekly meetups, free shoes for committed kids, and coaching mentorship. Although our year-round meetups only began last May, we have already held 5 programs lasting 6-14 weeks long. The premise for our meetups is simple; kids meet at a supervised location, participate in an all-levels/ ability-based workout and end with a fun game. Run SA Youth provides snacks/hydrations for each workout. Overall we have encouraged over 300 children in San Antonio to get active. In addition to our running programs, we sponsor our young athletes in various community events such as Alamo 13.1, SA Rock n Roll Kids Races, and more. To honor the community we serve, we have held two, free community youth running events and plan to make this an annual tradition. The primary fundraiser of Run SA Youth is the San Antonio 5k Summer Series, which is a set of four 5k races taking place at various SA trails. For 2 years in a row we managed to mobilize and motivate some 100 moms with young kids to join the Yerevan half-marathon and the Spring Run as charity runners. Moms with children under 5 crossed the kids distance together. Why? Because: -not every woman with a little kid dare stay active and is ready to run “adult” distances (5k and more) -only kids above 5 can participate in runs -it is always a great idea to join the Charity Runners, even if your kid is just 3 months old In summer 2018 for the first time, we plan to organise a separate #MamaBalikRun to: -promote sports and active lifestyle among women with sleep-deprivation -form a community that believes that “motherhood is not an excuse” -fundraise for an amazing cause and promote social responsibility and kindness -encourage sports from early (very early age) -spread the positive vibes and infect more moms to join the active movement (because the diapers tend to leave our lives early, but the “social gap” remains) It’s no secret that a kid usually switches all the priorities in the family. Many mothers find it hard to find time for their own development and healthy lifestyle, dedicating all their energy to raise a healthy kid, very often juggling with work. But the easiest way to do that is actually to be a good example of a healthy and happy individual. And #MamaBaikRun is a perfect springboard to start with! Enkele jaren geleden leerden wij op de kermis een mevrouw kennen. Ze was al jaren woonachtig in Belgie, maar van oorsprong een echte Tilburgse. We kwamen in gesprek en ze vertelde over de verzameling van haar moeder, een fervent kermisbezoeker en verzamelaar. Deze Tilburgse verzameling stond al jaren bij haar op zolder, maar het liefst zag ze de verzameling een plek krijgen in de stad waar hij hoort. Tilburg! Wij waren gelijk enthousiast en hebben op een regenachtige dag in het najaar de verzameling opgehaald. We gaan deze verzameling, eenmalig, 3 dagen schenken aan de Tilburgers. Dit gebeurt uiteraard op de Tilburgse kermis. Er komt een enorme installatie, op de route van de kermis, waarin alle voorwerpen ten toon gesteld worden, met de verhalen die erbij horen. Een soort van rariteitenkabinet zoals vroeger zo vaak te zien was op de Tilburgse Kermis. Een vrolijke wandeling, voor alle Tilburgers, door de Tilburgse geschiedenis!

Guiding the youth of today, for the community of tomorrow. The Next Cast Youth Fishing Program was launched with the focus of working with 10 to 13 year old children selected from the community. We're not only teaching them how to fish but how to explore and face new challenges, make new friends and to strengthen their confidence. • 20 local youth participants • 1.5 hour in-class sessions, once a week for 6-weeks • Sessions teach the fundamentals to the more advanced practices • 2 special guests will be invited to present on a specific topic • Hands on skill based exercises and casting practice will also be incorporated to keep participants entertained and focused • Take home fishing material will be provided over the 6 weeks • Fishing gear to keep upon completion At the end of the 6-week sessions, we have 10 local anglers who have volunteered to guide the participants in a full scale Bass Fishing Tournament which is followed by a lakeside Pizza party. This is the perfect opportunity to get hands on experience to apply their new knowledge and use their gear. I have been asked why I am doing this and why I am doing this for free, the purpose of this is to give back. The heart of the program and focus is on the under privileged youth in our community, for the most part they are unable to get out or have not had the opportunity to go fishing for various reasons. If the interest in learning how to fish is there, I want to provide the platform to teach them the skills and give them the tools. The Next Cast Youth Fishing Program was developed to teach and encourage young people to get out and enjoy this favored past time. Over the years there seems to be a drop in the next generation getting involved in fishing or the outdoors in general. The goal of this FREE program is to supply not only the knowledge but also the tools required to fish. Each participant receives the gear they will require to continue fishing upon completion of the program.

I applied to win an Awesome Buffalo grant when I first started my project, Sweet Buffalo Rocks last year. I didn't have many people participating, but now I have 28,000 members in my group hiding painted rocks in Western New York, but the most important members are kids. We love to brighten the day of a sick or sad child in need and that's exactly what we do. Anytime a child finds a painted rock it puts a huge smile on their face, which brings me to my newest idea for a project! There is a beautiful winter garden at Oishei Children's Hospital. I would like to team up with members of Stone's Buddies, a program supporting families coping with chronic and life-threatening illness, to paint Sweet Buffalo Rocks and leave them in the garden for children and their families to find on a regular basis. I'd like to put a sign or plaque that says "Leave your Sweet Buffalo Rock here to brighten a child's day." That way if a child and their family member gets bored or lonely waiting in the hospital and wants to take a walk to the garden, they have something free and fun to do. The best part about my idea is members of Stone's Buddies are actually children who face illnesses every day, so if I teamed up with them to paint rocks, they would be helping other kids just like them.

Making Queer History is a relatively new international project with team members in the United States and Canada. The objective of Making Queer History is to share the stories of the queer community and help educate people on the contributions made by queer people throughout history. While every article and podcast episode begins with the sharing of knowledge about queer people/events throughout history, most of them end by bringing it back to the now. Because we are working not only to teach people about our history but to bring that history into terms relevant to the present in a segment fondly referred to as “the moral of the story”. Whether we talk about intersectionality, the revolution in just being happy, or reacting to global events, we always work to make the history relevant to your day-to-day life. When we are not researching queer people who existed in our communities history, we are discussing the people who are making history right now. Every month we look at other queer creators and show you what they are doing so you can find more people to keep an eye out for. Our project is by, for, and about queer people.

Aspiring Young Artists (or AYA) Project is a new and quickly growing after-school program serving musically inclined students in Philadelphia high schools where funding for music programming is scarce. Now operating out of three High Schools in North Philadelphia (Kensington CAPA, Olney, and YouthBuild Philadelphia), our aim and our process are simple. Give students a platform to build their voice and share their stories through the process of songwriting, recording, and performing. Connect these young artists 1-on-1 to an experienced local artist mentor from the Philadelphia music scene. In our after-school program, students work with mentors for 8 weeks, as they write and record their own music, often for the first time. In the end, our goal is to build confidence, creativity, and community in students through our unique combination of mentoring, songwriting, and peer connection. Other things you should know about the AYA Project: 1. Students write their own music! This is not about students learning to play instruments or sing other people's songs (though both of these skills are wonderful). Rather, we believe that through songwriting, students can not only gain musical skills, but also come to understand the power and the value of their own voices. 2. We've done this before! Though we're not perfect, we've been running this program for 3 years and we know it works- we interview students after each year to see how we can improve. 3. Philadelphia, PA – Neighborhood Bike Works Summer Camp

Neighborhood Bike Works (NBW) is an incredible nonprofit located in and primarily serving West Philly, which is an area full of amazing kids who are chronically underserved and deserve better. NBW inspires youth and strengthens Philadelphia communities by providing equitable access to bicycling and bike repair through education, recreation, leadership and career-building opportunities. Since 2002 one portion of NBW’s work has been to offer three two-week summer camp experiences for young people ages 8-14 years where they earn a bike, lock, and helmet. Campers not only earn a bike—which includes refurbishing it—and become expert riders, but in the process go on field trips, learn about good nutrition and healthy living, and see their city in a whole new way as they explore confidently with NBW’s staff, which includes youth that previously completed the same program. To attend NBW’s summer camp many young people rely on scholarships. The majority of kids served by NBW are eligible for free or reduced price school lunch and come from communities that are considered distressed, meaning zip codes where there is high unemployment, low economic growth, high poverty, and low high school graduation rates. It is especially important for these kids to have access to a learning opportunity combined with a fun and safe environment during the summer months. Once kids have completed the Earn-A-Bike curriculum (part of summer camp) they are poised to participate in NBW’s continuum of programming: Youth Bike Education & Empowerment Program (YBEEP). YBEEP is unique in Philadelphia, because it engages under-resourced youth through bicycle mechanics, advocacy, and riding skills to encourage long-term healthy development. In addition to the summer camp, YBEEP offers riding clubs, advanced mechanics classes, leadership training, and job opportunities. A grant from the Awesome Foundation of Philadelphia could be the beginning of years of enrichment for great kids.

San Jose, CA – Face of Hunger Exhibit

The proposed 2018 federal budget includes a 30% cut in Calfresh (food stamps) benefits, and other social services, which will greatly impact the most vulnerable denizens of San Jose. Given this policy shift and drastically changing political climate, Second Harvest Food Bank is in need of an artistic profile series of those experiencing food insecurity, in order to highlight the diverse needs of our community. I hope to capture, through photojournalism, five experiences of people struggling to meet their basic needs in our community. For example, the first participant is an asylum seeker from Yemen, who has recently started over in San Jose. I plan on having a meal with participants, utilizing a professional photograph (my sister) to photograph them at relevant sites around San Jose, and capturing their personal stories through a written profile. In order to reach a diverse population, we will outreach to the social services agency, attend community dinners and college food distributions in high need locations, and coordinate with Second Harvest Food Bank and other outreach groups. Second Harvest Food Bank will utilize the exhibit in order to build community and civic engagement among groups currently not engaged; the unveiling will be in November 2018. Content Magazine has agreed to publish the exhibit in their October 2018 issue. Lastly, we are approaching the City of San Jose to host the exhibit at City Hall.Thank you for your consideration.

San Francisco, CA – The Art of Survival

My project is organizing a pop up art show called Art of Survival to showcase art related to sexual assault + consent. In the spirit of the #metoo campaign, we stand as a community in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault, harassment, and violence. All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Bay Area organizations. Our last event supported SFWAR + Casa de las Madres and our next one, on August 4th, will go to Huckleberry House. A group of artists, scientists, and activists in San Francisco are the event organizers. On August 4th, Minna Gallery will host our show. We will be displaying works from artists with a focus on showcasing those from the Bay Area with themes connected to our work. Artists will each donate a few pieces to be displayed at the show, to be part of a silent auction where anyone attending can bid on them as they enjoy the show. There will be light snacks + refreshments provided, and alcoholic beverages for sale. We will also have guest speakers from the organizations. This is the second installment of Art of Survival - the first one was in December, and we raised over $5000 for anti-rape organizations in the area! We want to top that with this event!

The Swartz-Manning's first exhibit (included in this document) will provide a detailed history of Aaron Swartz Day, including the story of how Lisa Rein and the Aaron Swartz Day community provided friendship and support to Chelsea Manning, before she was released from military prison, in May 2017. The second set of exhibits, displayed in their own "Leary Wing" of the museum, will eventually provide a complete timeline of Dr. Timothy Leary's life, starting with his birth in 1920. For these exhibits, we are collaborating directly with his son, Zach Leary and his Personal Archivist, Michael Horowitz. This exhibit also has an AI "Timbot" that converses with the user to help explain the content unfolding around them :-) The Swartz-Manning VR Museum, Art Gallery, and Fun House will include four different types of installations: 1) "Traditional" museum exhibits (essentially, artifacts presented on walls and displays). 2) A "Fun House" that blends the traditional museum's content within additional media to create an ever-expanding learning game environment, where you can share your learning "trip" with others as a "flashback." 3) A largely experimental Art Gallery platform, with full scale installations by both established & up and coming artists, whose unique virtual reality creations might lead to their mainstream discovery. 4) Educational areas that explain will explain and teach how the museum itself was built, step-by-step. (Complete with CAD templates to enable artists to exhibit their own creations in VR.) 5) How to create real world "solar survival" technologies, such as building solar power cell phone chargers - or a freshly-invented "Vampire Charger," that actually enables a cell phone to be charged safely from whatever random batteries happen to be lying around after a disaster, while protecting the phone from blowing up from a sudden power burst - for use by the homeless or after a natural disaster. Seattle, WA – On My Head. In My Heart

I am working on a series of portraits of people from diverse backgrounds based on interviews conducted with the subjects about what items or garments they wear on their heads and what this means to them. Whether they wear a headscarf or a baseball cap, a wig or a yarmulke, my subjects will help me to celebrate cultural diversity through a lively art installation featuring painted portraits and written and recorded interviews. My past artistic practice has been divided between my painted work of vulnerable botanical and zoological environments and my work with vulnerable human populations in the Middle East where I teach art in refugee camps. My goal for “On My Head. In My Heart” is to combine these two practices. My inspiration for this project is the current political tension around diversity, immigration and cultural expression. After September 1, 2001 people who were Muslim – or appeared to be Muslim – in the United States were targeted because of their appearance. Many who were not Muslim but were misunderstood to be so because they wore turbans or beards were also targeted and some lost their lives. I believe such bigotry stems from ignorance and my project aims to enlighten viewers as to the subtleties, joys and richness of sartorial expression. The project is joyful rather than preachy. It is a celebration. One could even call it a hat party and indeed the opening party will be a gathering of the subjects in the portraits wearing their head gear. What a festival of fun and diversity at a time when such a thing is needed!

"Tail Feather "is a burlesque ballet examining the cause and effects of toxic masculinity in black communities through the courting, mating, and family dynamics of birds.In the animal kingdom the male birds usually have brighter colored feathers, or other cosmetic attributes compared to their female counterparts. The male birds are the dancers, the singers, and the designers, and they do it all for the attention of their potential mate or to protect their families. "Tail Feather" will be a full length new work of burlesque theatre and dance. It is written and conceptualized by Earth Pearl Collective’s Artistic Director Sadiqua Iman who will also be directing it. We will be premiering this project at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center June 2018. We believe that artists of color often are only seen doing original work in small fringe theatres, but deserve to be seen on larger stages more often. Increased visibility of artists of color doing dynamic work defies the long standing belief that they are not represented in Seattle. Burlesque and queerness are often taboo in many communities of color, so Earth Pearl Collective strives to bring forth universal themes and historical relevance to both the communities Burlesque is still being rediscovered by many, and to some it still seems like a low brow form of art. “Tail Feather” is an opportunity to change that narrative by blending the story line and composition of a classical ballet with the seductiveness and social commentary of neo-burlesque. Earth Pearl Collective (EPC) is creating a very intentional cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary production that will bring unlikely communities together. One of the biggest questions in the theatre community right now is how to build equity and diversity. “Tail Feather” is a direct response to this. It is a collaboration of a grassroots organization, a historically black institution, and world renowned artists of color not only on stage but behind the scenes.
