<title>Gloucester, MA – Green Crab Microenvironment Trapping Project</title>
<content type="html">Gloucester soft shell clam populations have been declining for well over a decade, and it is not largely due to pollution or overharvesting. It has to do with predation. Green crabs are an invasive species that have severely impacted clams and their environment by voraciously eating young clams and larvae. In 2025, I worked with the Gloucester Shellfish Dept on a project that passively collected clam larvae. With 65 boxes, we collected over 30,000 clams. This proves clams are reproducing but not surviving. Dr Brian Beal, a top clam researcher, states that removing only adult green crabs won’t by itself fix the problem. The smaller crabs are the greater threat, vacuuming larvae up at a tremendous rate. To date, there are no efforts to reduce smaller crabs.
My project is to test several modified traps to see if I can collect these smaller crabs. There will be different modifications used to see what works best, and how many crabs I could possibly catch. The modifications involve creating readily-accessible small complex environments that the crabs will treat as a “crab hotel” using methods such as baffled small mesh, pine branches, and a 3d printed “hotel”. Any bycatch will be removed and the green crabs destroyed. I have two test sites in mind - Jim Durney and Jones River near Ram Island. Traps will be checked regularly and data will be recorded and shared with the public.

<title>Gloucester, MA – Gloucester Schooner Festival street pole banners</title>
<content type="html">I was recently in Maine for a schooner festival and saw that they had banners on the street poles to promote the event. Knowing that we have the same type of pole setup and banners I wanted to create the banners for the Gloucester Schooner Festival over Labor Day. It's something we could use year after year and build on by adding more banners over time. This project will help promote the efforts to celebrate the maritime event and draw attention to the events that educate the general public about the maritime heritage and culture of the schooners. Gloucester Schooner Festival is a non profit group and while Maritime Gloucester is the host, they are not part of this request.</content>

    <title>Gloucester, MA – 100 Trees Project </title>
    <content type="html">1. Our Mission
Over the last 5 years the 100 Trees Project has been dedicated to restoring Gloucester’s urban canopy, one heat island at a time. Our mission is to mitigate climate change, improve air quality, and enhance the physical beauty of our city by planting and—crucially—maintaining native trees in high-need areas.

2. Proven Success in Gloucester
We don’t just plant and walk away. To date, we have planted 75 trees in Gloucester alone and successfully transformed several pockets of the city. Last year’s grant from Awesome Gloucester and other funding sources was instrumental in:
•. Planting 27 trees in 3 different locations. Burnham Playground, John Alto Park, Lincoln Park GHA housing.
•	Engaging community volunteers for planting days.
•	The Impact: We’ve seen a measurable increase in sidewalk shade and a renewed sense of neighborhood pride in our previously "gray" corridors.

3. The 2026 Awesome Focus: Washington Street
This year, we have secured a grant from the ECCF for 35 new trees. We are focusing 25 of these along the sidewalk along Washington Street, directly across from Addison Gilbert Hospital.
•	The Challenge: This stretch of Washington Street is a documented "Heat Island" and as an Environmental Justice (EJ) community mapped by MAPC and DCR, this area disproportionately feels the heat every summer.
•	The Timeline: The trees are purchased! We will be in the ground on April 18th.

4. From Asphalt to Canopy: The Vision
Using AI visualization (see attached 2026 and 2036 images) , we’ve mapped the transformation of Washington Street:
•	Spring 2026: A unrelenting stretch of asphalt-heavy area.
•	Spring 2046: A lush, green corridor that lowers ambient temperatures, protects pedestrians from the sun, and provides a "green lung" for hospital patients and neighbors.

<title>Hamilton-Wenham, MA – Common Ground in the Common Place</title>
    <content type="html">The Idea
We live in a time when division feels like the default. We scroll past people who think differently, live differently, and see the world differently, and rarely stop to sit across from them.
Common Ground in the Common Place is a simple antidote to that.
With a $1,000 grant, we will fund 20 shared meals or coffees between 40 people who might not otherwise share a table, pairing strangers or acquaintances who differ in age, background, political perspective, lifestyle, or worldview. Young and old. Liberal and conservative. Long-time local and newly arrived. The combinations are as varied as our community itself.
The premise is beautifully uncomplicated: sit down, share a meal, find what you have in common.
Outcomes...
20 gatherings completed within [90-120] days of funding
40 community members who sat across from someone different, and found something they share
20 posts on The Awesome Foundation's Facebook page documenting what was discovered, helping lend visibility to the Awesome Fondation's Initiative.
Patronizing local businesses
A replicable model that other communities can adopt with minimal resources

<title>Rhode Island – RASPUTIN II: BRING BACK THE GROOVE!</title>
<content type="html">Rasputin II: Bring Back the Groove is a sequel to the hit PVD Fringe performances and subsequent fall run at The Wilbury Theatre Group, to sold out audiences. Grigori Rasputin never died, made his way to the US, and has transitioned from providing mystic powers of love to the Romanovs to being a self-love guru to poor repressed capitalistic Americans. Rasputin, LIVE! The first show was about how to unconditionally love yourself through Bolshevick-inspired Zumba, participation potatoes, Madonna lipsyncs, on-stage therapy sessions, and more. It brought audiences of ~100 together every night to dance during the show and in the dance party that ended the performance.

A true fever dream we are very happy to support.</content>

    <title>Chicago, IL – Core Compass </title>
<content type="html">Blind Service Chicago is launching Core Compass, an adaptive Pilates program for people who are blind or have low vision. Created with Chicago small business Movement Med, the program brings people together through movement, wellness, and community connection while making fitness more accessible for Chicagoans often excluded from traditional fitness facilities and programs.

Core strength is especially important for people with vision loss because movement often depends more on balance and body awareness than visual cues. A stronger core can improve posture, steadier walking, safer weight shifting, and quicker balance reactions. It can also reduce fatigue and help lower fall risk. When the body feels centered and supported, everyday travel becomes easier and more confident.

Core Compass will offer weekly classes open to Chicago participants every Tuesday at Blind Service Chicago’s Bernstein Center in downtown Chicago. Sessions will be led by instructors holding Pilates Instructor (Mat and Apparatus) Certification and The Medical Exercise Training Institute’s Advanced Medical Exercise Trainer Certification. Equipment for classes has already been pledged through in-kind support, making the program ready to launch quickly once funding is secured.

Accessible fitness options remain limited for many blind and low vision adults. Traditional gyms often rely on visual demonstration and can feel isolating or unsafe. Core Compass changes that through tactile cueing, descriptive instruction, individualized support, and small class sizes. Participants will strengthen their bodies, build confidence, and connect with peers in an inclusive setting.

We expect to reach more than 100 blind and low vision Chicagoans through direct participation, rotating enrollment, and shared instructional resources sent throughout our community. </content>

    <title>Chicago, IL – HOTDOG HOTDOG: 4D Audiovisual Experience</title>
<content type="html">Step into the steam and sizzle of HOTDOG HOTDOG, an all-senses, all-beef, audiovisual takeover that could only happen in Chicago. Smell the mustard. Hear the snap. Feel the bass rattle your buns. From the Loop to Logan Square, this is a night for anyone who knows there’s no ketchup in art.

This is no ordinary show. It’s a fully-loaded 4D experience where you can see, taste, smell, and hear the humble Chicago-style hot dog in glorious, ridiculous excess. Digitally rendered dogs (created by slinging real glizzies at high-speed cinema cameras) collide with live performances by Chicago's best musicians and comedians. Each act remixes the visuals in real time, turning every bite and beat into a one-of-a-kind sensory feast.

Arrive early for a dog-forward pre-show: eat real Chicago-style hot dogs (vegan, too!), shop artisan-made hot dog merch, and immerse yourself in the visuals. It’s part concert, part cookout, part hallucinogenic condiment dream.

All our visuals are crafted by hand. We are proud to say no generative AI is used here!

First, hot dog ingredients are flung around and filmed in slow motion using professional high-speed cinema cameras. After the videos are processed, we bring them into a custom VJ program we built in TouchDesigner. Finally, we add in visual distortions and audio reactivity to bring the dog to life!

Visuals are played back and layered in real-time using a five-octave MIDI keyboard. We integrate live camera feeds and multiple sources of external media during a show to create a visual collage that honors the dog and includes the audience in the experience.

We partner with local Chicago venues, businesses, musicians, artists, and performers. We perform at our own variety shows as well as at karaoke nights and open mics around the city.</content>

<content type="html">Bridging and Belong aims to provide art classes to seniors who live in assisted living or nursing care facilities. These clients have medical concerns and/or dementia or memory loss diagnoses. Together with the lifestyle enrichment directors of Presbyterian SeniorCare in Oakmont, we will execute a mosaic-like work of art created by their residents, families, and staff. It is their wish that this piece of art be gifted to the residents at the new Mosaic Apartments in Oakland, which is the first affordable senior housing complex that caters to LGBTQ+ seniors in Western Pennsylvania. The project is based on the work of Chicago based artist, Reginald Laurent. He explains his art, "my art imitates life because it is representative of the diversity and inclusion of every culture, the backbone of what makes the world such an interesting, complex, and beautiful place." </content>

<title>Kingston – Hands to Hustle: Fueling Small Businesses from Wit</title>
<content type="html">Ryandale Transitional Housing is launching a small but powerful idea: a resident-led micro-loan fund to help people turn skills into income.

Many of the individuals we support already have talents they’re eager to build on. At our women’s house, residents are creating handmade jewelry and hoping to sell at local craft markets, but the upfront cost of table fees is a barrier. At our men’s houses, residents are doing small repairs, woodworking, and furniture restoration, but lack the funds for basic supplies, tools, or even simple promotion like business cards.

This project will provide small, flexible micro-loans (typically $50–$100) to help residents take that first step. Whether it’s paying for a market table, purchasing materials, or printing flyers, these funds remove immediate barriers and create real opportunities to earn income, build confidence, and develop entrepreneurial skills.

What makes this initiative unique is that it is grounded in trust and dignity. Residents will be supported to set simple goals, manage their funds, and when possible, repay into the fund so it can support others. It’s not just financial assistance; it’s a stepping stone toward independence and self-worth.

With support from Awesome Kingston, we can pilot this fund and quickly put resources directly into the hands of residents who are ready to act. A small investment can lead to someone making their first sale, gaining their first customer, or seeing their skills valued by the community.

This is about more than micro-business—it’s about creating momentum.</content>

<title>South Bend, IN – Float Fest Goshen 2026</title>
<content type="html">Float Fest is an annual celebration of the outdoor space and wonderful community we have here in Goshen, Indiana. In actual form and function, it is a moving, outdoor music festival, slowly floating through Goshen's Millrace district each summer. In broader scope, it is a community event that brings together outdoor enthusiasts, music enthusiasts, community members' homes, people from outside the community (through bands and attendees), business owners and the general community, young and old! Additionally, Float Fest has expanded to not only a one day event, but an entire week of celebrations focused on the Goshen Millrace and elkhart river. This year we will have 2 bonus concerts at Goshen Brewing Company, Float Fest-themed Music Bingo, a Group paddle of "The Loop" on the Elkhart River, and other events during the week leading up to the festival. Float Fest is the best of what Goshen has to offer, showcasing what can happen when a community comes together around a goal, with community members and local businesses donating food, drink, sound equipment, and their time to create a day of celebrating and community bonding.

The actual festival has over 20 musical acts, with people playing by boat and in the park, on bridges and in backyards. We have visual artists displaying and creating work for the fest as well, including a couple South Bend Artists! Each band plays in a different backyard, and the festival moves down the canal, from yard to yard, before landing in Millrace park, where there is an additional stage, and food and drink. Float fest is a journey and is a different experience for everyone involved! </content>

<title>South Bend, IN – Opera Uncorked Scenes Program</title>
<content type="html">Opera Uncorked is producing an opera scenes program this October. Our past shows have all been open-mic format, where singers sign up two weeks beforehand with music fitting a theme for the month. We want to take a step forward and produce a rehearsed show, full of some of the most famous scenes and duets in opera.

Our goal is to perform at Ironhand Wine Bar similar to how other bands perform there. We'll charge a cover at the door, then perform a series of sets covering most of the evening.

A hallmark of our shows is giving our audiences important context for the music we're performing, allowing them to understand the drama as well as appreciate the music. We would continue this in our scenes program, as the set-list structure provides many opportunities for chatting with the people in the crowd.

    <title>South Bend, IN – Portage Pickle Fest</title>
<content type="html">We are overhauling our former Summer Solstice event into the first ever Portage Pickle Fest!

We are city full of foodies, and this has the potential to turn into a larger festival like Picklesburg. This first year, we are planning on a paneled blind taste test of different local restaurants' pickles, followed by a sampling for the public. We're hiring a "pickle slinger" to sell individual pickles with flair (keeping it PG). We're also trying to incorporate a pickleball element where folks can learn about the sport and sign up for leagues.

Pickle themed merchandise will be available from our artisan partners in The Portage Collective. We are recruiting for a drink and food vendor as well. We hope to host Unity Gardens to educate about pickling and fermentation classes.

The other shops on the block will be invited to pickle theme as much as they like.</content>

<title>Newmarket – Campaign Ready: Youth Political Leadership Lab</title>
<content type="html">Campaign Ready: Youth Political Leadership Lab is a non-partisan civic education program designed to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to engage meaningfully in their communities and local democratic processes. Through a series of interactive workshops led by experienced public leaders, campaign professionals, and community organizers, participants will learn about municipal and provincial government, community organizing, communications, and civic leadership. In partnership with the Alkebulan Heritage Center, workshop sessions will also be livestreamed to students in Ghana, creating an international civic education exchange and exposing participants to global perspectives on leadership, governance, and community development. The program will culminate in a hands-on campaign strategy workshop where participants will design and present a campaign plan, applying the leadership and engagement skills developed throughout the program. By connecting youth with experienced leaders and providing practical learning opportunities ahead of the October 2026 municipal election, the initiative aims to inspire greater youth participation in democratic processes and strengthen community leadership among the next generation. The project fosters civic engagement by equipping youth with practical knowledge and skills that help them understand how local government works and how they can participate in shaping decisions that affect their communities. The project addresses the social issue of low youth participation in civic and democratic processes. Many young people feel disconnected from government or lack access to opportunities that help them understand how to get involved. By providing accessible civic education and hands-on learning, the program helps remove barriers that prevent youth from engaging in public life, while building confidence, leadership, and long-term civic participation.</content>

<title>Lake Mac – Wangi Quilters Biennial Quilt Show</title>
<content type="html">Every 2 years, our members at Wangi Quilters hold their Quilt Show , held over 3 days and attracting between 500-600 visitors. This in turn supports the local businesses and clubs who benefit from the influx of visitors. Our members displayed over 90 pieces at our last show, not just quilts, but other handmade items as well.

Through the selling of raffle tickets to 2 beautiful quilts our club members have made, we are able to raise funds for local charities. These charities can be quite diverse, ranging from sponsoring the Wangi Fireworks, to supporting a local rowing club, to buying vital medical equipment to the John Hunter Hospital Kids Ward. Last quilt show saw us raise money for Southlakes Incorporated and Wyee Food Hub. Our members are passionate about supporting as many local charities as possible.

I’d also like to thank Awesome Lake Mac on behalf of Wangi Quilters and the many charities we support.

    <title>Portland, OR – The Artist Survival School</title>
<content type="html">The Artist Survival School is a sliding-scale community workshop and resource project designed to help emerging artists — especially Black, trans, queer, disabled, and working class artists — learn practical tools for sustaining their creative practice.

As an artist and community organizer, I’ve spent over 20 years learning how to navigate grants, residencies, fellowships, artist statements, project budgets, and creative opportunities, often through trial and error and community knowledge-sharing rather than formal institutional access. This project is about redistributing that knowledge in an accessible, welcoming, and grounded way.

The project will include:

a hybrid in-person/virtual workshop in Portland &amp; the broader accessibility
a collaboratively created mini-zine/resource guide participants can take home and share with others

Topics will include:

finding grants and residencies
writing artist statements and bios
creating project budgets
documenting work
sustaining creative practice while surviving capitalism
building community-centered artistic careers

The workshop will prioritize conversation, transparency, and collective learning rather than gatekeeping or competition. Participants will also have space to ask questions, workshop ideas, and share resources with one another.

The zine will include practical tools, prompts, funding resources, application tips, and reflections gathered during the workshops. Copies will be distributed to participants and shared digitally online.

Portland has an incredible creative community, but many artists — especially marginalized artists — are locked out of information that could help sustain their work. The Artist Survival School is about making that knowledge more accessible, communal, and less intimidating.</content>

<title>Newburyport, MA – Girls Inc Summer Programming </title>
<content type="html">Imagine a summer where girls ages 6 to 15 do not just attend a program, they belong to something. Our three-week Girls Inc. summer experience is built to empower girls to think boldly, build confidence, and find their sisterhood.
Each week has its own purposeful theme that stands on its own while also building toward something bigger. Week one, Empower, focuses on team-building activities that forge real bonds and teach the power of connection. Week two, Explore, sparks curiosity through STEM with visits to the science museum, hands-on archaeology, and gardening. Week three, Dream, turns confidence outward with goal setting, assertiveness practice, and showcasing talents through art and storytelling.
Girls are welcome to join for one week, two weeks, or all three. Each week is its own complete experience while also being part of a larger journey of growth. Your $1,000 grant would fund 3.5 scholarships at $300 per week, ensuring financial barriers never stand between a girl and an experience that could change her life. When we invest in girls, we invest in our entire community.</content>

<title>Poughkeepsie, NY – The Poughkeepsie Community Cat Initiative</title>
<content type="html">We are taking a direct, neighborhood-level approach to the community cat crisis in the City of Poughkeepsie. The city’s current free-roaming cat overpopulation can feel overwhelming for residents. We’re here to break that cycle by focusing our efforts exactly where they are needed most.

Our project works in two ways:

1.	Focused TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return): At the heart of all we do is our Focused TNR program. We believe every community cat deserves a stable, healthy life, and every neighborhood deserves a peaceful environment. We work side-by-side with City residents in "hot spots," humanely trapping, sterilizing, and returning cats to their outdoor homes; providing immediate stabilization to local colonies.
2.	The Pet Parent Bridge: Our work doesn't stop at peoples’ doorstep. While we’re out fixing community cats, we meet neighbors whose own pets go in and out, unintentionally adding to the local overpopulation. We created this "Bridge" to close that loop. If a neighbor wants to fix their pet but can’t afford the cost or doesn't have a ride, we provide the fully funded voucher for spay/neuter and rabies vaccine, and transport. It’s our way of supporting the people who care for our city’s cats, whether they live on a porch or a sofa.

The $1,000 Impact:

We don't have a "startup" cost; we have a "surgery" cost. We can fix one cat for $50. That means an Awesome Grant doesn't go toward posters or payroll—it goes to 20 surgeries. That is 20 lives improved and thousands of future homeless kittens prevented in our city alleys and backyards.

This awesome project replaces a "loud" problem with a compassionate solution. Overpopulation causes real friction between neighbors and real suffering for animals. By removing the financial barrier for city residents and managing outdoor colonies, we’re making Poughkeepsie a more harmonious place to live. We aren't just "fixing cats"—we are showing up for our neighbors and building a more humane city, one surgery at a time.</content>

<title>Detroit, MI – SPCA Community Animal Kinship Art Garden</title>
<content type="html">The SPCA Community Animal Kinship Art Garden is a joyful, community powered public art project transforming a vacant lot in Detroit’s Southfield Plymouth neighborhood into a vibrant outdoor gallery celebrating the animals that share our urban ecosystem. Led by the Southfield Plymouth Community Association in partnership with Weaver Community Arts Inc. and Weaver Fine Art Creatives LLC, the project brings neighbors together to create colorful, animal themed sculptures, murals, and storytelling installations that spark imagination, compassion, and pride.
The garden is designed as a welcoming creative space where youth, families, and longtime residents collaborate to beautify their neighborhood while learning about humane education and local wildlife. Through hands on workshops, young artists help design and build the artworks, gaining leadership experience, artistic skills, and a sense of ownership in shaping their community.
What makes this project awesome is its simplicity and its heart: a once empty lot becomes a place of color, creativity, and connection. Children see their artwork displayed publicly. Neighbors gather, talk, and co create. Visitors encounter playful depictions of deer, birds, cats, and other animals that reflect the life of the community itself.
The Awesome Foundation grant will help us expand the next phase of the garden with new youth created installations, weatherproof signage, and materials for community art days. This small investment creates a big, visible impact — turning an overlooked space into a living symbol of neighborhood pride, creativity, and kinship with the animals who share our world.

<title>Santa Cruz, CA – Rally for the Raptors</title>
<content type="html">Raptors in distress found by the general public are initially brought to Native Animal Rescue for immediate care and stabilization. Once stabilized they are transferred to Blue Apple Farms for long term rehabilitation and eventual release back into the wild. Our organization allows members of the general public to view raptors in an intimate setting which they aren’t able to achieve in nature. During their visit, guests are educated about the rehabilitation process, while engaging in hands-on educational activities which helps to foster a greater appreciation and encourages conservation efforts. All ages and demographics are welcome to book a visit to our facility. We host tours for individuals as well as retiree groups, women’s groups, scout troops, school groups, birding groups and members of the autistic community. We have also recently introduced “Bird Day” private events, which offer a unique, educational celebration experience.

We strive to have something for everyone who is interested in learning more about our local raptors and our shared habitat. We are committed to growing these programs in a sustainable way that expands both our rehabilitation capacity and our educational reach within the community.

Step inside the wonderfully chaotic brain of a late-diagnosed AuDHDer Georgy Rochow as she dives headfirst into the sticky challenges of navigating adulthood with big feelings and the absurdity of simply trying to keep it all together.

Blending comedy, music, and raw honesty, Georgy’s performances strike a rare balance between heartfelt and hilarious - always unafraid to lean into the messy, joyful, and unhinged. Packed with sharp-witted, original musical comedy and backed by a powerhouse live band, this show walks the line between tears of joy and just plain tears.

What to expect? A whirlwind of laughter, big feelings, and unapologetic access to the queer, neurodivergent inner world that rarely takes centre stage.

This piece of original work was largely written on Georgy’s commute to work. Living regionally (south) and working metro (north), Georgy travels roughly 20 hours a week to support young musicians build skills and confidence at Northern Sound System. Luckily, she loves her job and is passionate about empowering emerging creatives to take to the stage, dabble in self expression, and value the stories they have to share through out.

Georgy took the lemons (traffic on south road) and turned it into a fringe show, debuting at Adelaide Fringe, 2026. She has fallen in love with this project and is excited to see it grow and evolve.

This piece of work is more than just a laugh (although they are encouraged), it’s an opportunity to open up the dialogue on what it’s really like living as a queer, AuDHDer navigating adulthood and a world that can be unforgiving.

Excited to develop the work further, the show has been invited into the Pride Fest 2026 Sydney program, a valuable professional development opportunity.
Awesome Foundation Adelaide funded her to develop educational resources associated with the show to spread awareness, decrease loneliness and show stigma the door. Using humour, story telling and music as vessels for change, Georgy passionate about sharing insight into what it's really like navigating adult life and a creative career with hidden disabilities. </content>

<title>Cass Clay – The Art Bar Improvement Project</title>
<content type="html">We want to create one, potentially two, pieces of public art to draw in and delight the community.
The Art Bar was established in 2017. Pre-covid, they hosted frequent events open to the public. Post-covid, they switched to private events. Although that has worked fine up until now, we want to start having public events again. Since taking over the space in October, Creative Traveler FM has wanted to highlight this underrated space. I teach painting events where I introduce all ages and abilities to the gift of creating. After graduating from MSUM with a minor in Art Therapy, I have also wanted to add some elements of therapeutic art to what I do in this space. The inside was once covered in a chaotic hodgepodge of handprints. We repainted the inside to reflect a cheerful but calmer environment for creating art. The outside of the building is currently also covered in handprints, but rather than feeling artsy, it feels messy. We have a plan to make the outside an attractive piece of public art, drawing attention to who we are and what we offer the community.</content>

    <title>St. Paul, MN – AI for Beginners</title>
<content type="html">AI For Beginners is AwesomeStPaul’s May 2026 grantee. Congratulations! We are very interested in learning how AI strategies can improve lives.

LaTasha Reed explains her project:

“I’m applying for an AwesomeStPaul $1,000 grant to launch a free, public AI workshop series in St. Paul focused on practical AI literacy, responsible use, and real-world applications for everyday residents, job seekers, and small business owners.

AI is everywhere, but many people are encountering it through hype, fear, or misinformation—not clear, trustworthy education. My goal is to give St. Paul participants a grounded, easy-to-understand introduction to what AI is, why it’s trending, who is using it (and why), and what to watch for—bias, privacy risks, misinformation, and legal/regulatory compliance. I’ll also cover the “so what”: how AI can responsibly support resumes, study help, budgeting, customer service, content creation, and productivity—without replacing good judgment.

The series will include 2–4 sessions, each 1–2 hours, hosted in St. Paul at a community-accessible space such as a library or community center partner site. Sessions will be interactive, beginner-friendly, and open to the public, with a short take-home resource guide so attendees leave with something useful and actionable.

This $1,000 grant will make the series possible. Funds will cover workshop essentials such as printed materials/resource guides, basic AV or room costs if needed, accessibility support (live captions/interpretation when possible), and light refreshments to encourage attendance. I’ll also promote the workshops through neighborhood groups and partner networks so St. Paul residents know the opportunity exists.

Timeline: within 30–60 days of award, I will finalize the venue/partners, publish dates, and deliver the first workshop, followed by the remaining sessions over the next month. AwesomeStPaul’s support will help St. Paul residents gain confident, informed access to AI—so it becomes something they can understand and use safely, not something happening to them.”</content>

    <title>Ipswich, MA – Town-Wide Scavenger Hunt</title>
<content type="html">Our awesome project will bring our community together in new ways. The whole town will be included in a spring related scavenger hunt. Stations with people attending them will be set up around town providing hints and small gifts such as flowers, gift cards, spring related sweets, and more. You start at the town green, the grass near the visitor center, and work your way around town, collecting small gifts and participating in activities. At the beginning you will be given a basket or a bag. As you make your way to each station you will need to complete a small task like painting a rock, planting a flower, picking up trash, singing a song, or playing a short game. Then you will be given a hint and a little goodie. There will be a total of around 10 stands. If you finish the hunt, you will receive a free small flower pot to take home at the last station. We will reach out to small local stores and ask if they would like to have a station in their establishment or provide treats and prizes. The whole idea of this is to bring together people of all ages to create a fun, immersive activity that builds community and celebrates spring. </content>

<content type="html">Hi, I wanted to put together a BBQ in the park for the community set for mid-late May 2026. I already began this project and someone on Reddit told me about this resource, suggesting to use it for this.

I already have a number of activities lined up such as outdoor sports, educational workshop to engines (for kids), BBQ and dietary accoms, music, performances. Turnout size is growing each day and I would love to coordinate this bigger but I can't afford it past a certain point.

I conceived of a family-and-friends-safe event that everyone could come to and just befriend people they haven't ever talked to or met. Build community and fun memories from that. I believe it builds safety, trust, and hope. So after doing that several times in other states, I kinda just wanted to do that right next to my home community.</content>

<title>Ann Arbor, MI – Second Annual Nostalgia Pride Cookout</title>
<content type="html">Our awesome project is our Second Annual Nostalgia Pride Cookout. Our Nostalgia Pride Cookout gives us an opportunity to commune with the Black queer community in honest during the very special month of pride. It is a time for our board members and community members to rest, enjoy, and be in community.

There have been many attacks on the Trans, LGBTQ, and Black communities as of late such as bans on trans* folks fundamental documents such as licenses , the attacks and targeting from ICE, and police brutality just to name a few.It is of upmost importance to continue cultivating spaces where we can be free, express ourselves, and commune together even if it is just for one day. Although we do host multiple events throughout the year, the Nostalgia Pride Cookout is our biggest event to date.

Last year, we hosted at the Jim Toy Center in Ann Arbor and we had over 70 attendees and over 100 RSVPs. At the Nostalgia Pride Cookout, we offer free food, entertainment, games, and community. We understand the impact that joy can have on the spirit and community. This year our Nostalgia Pride Cookout is on June 27 at the Growing Hope Farm Stand in Ypsilanti. We are super excited to be putting on our event in Ypsilanti and welcoming everyone into our space.</content>

    <title>Philadelphia, PA – String Explorations Education Outreach</title>
<content type="html">String Explorations is a music performance and music education project led by Chris Coyle. Education-wise, Chris and his collaborators seek to inspire young music students (primarily violin/cello/guitar/bass students ranging from college to middle school levels) and encourage them to develop practice approaches and skills found outside of the traditional "orchestra" and classical experience. Through demonstrations, conversations, and shareable resources made available to students, we model jazz learning and diverse styles (folk, fiddle, Latin, funk, and much more) for strings and help students take steps towards improvisation and self-guided creativity. The goal is not to convert students to jazz learning exclusively, but to help them see the connections and possibilities that diverse study offers. We want students to feel like they can create their own musical path.

We have offered this content and experience in formal settings, including at the Jazz Education Network's national conference in 2025 and at college music programs such as Temple University and Ursinus College. Our work can be most impactful at smaller schools and organizations that often lack a budget for guest artists or specialized programming. We want to reach students even when program budgeting proves difficult, and this is where Awesome Fund can help.

We are seeking modest stipend funds to cover teaching work done by our team at local/regional schools or organizations. This compensation is equivalent to just a fraction of what we are (sometimes) paid by private schools and colleges, but it makes it possible for us to prioritize the time and effort. Again, working in these settings can be even more impactful than serving students at well-resourced schools and organizations.

While this is surely a niche project, we have a ready-to-roll plan in place to engage young students with our work. Documenting this proposed work can lead to more opportunities for project support.

    <title>San Francisco, CA – Giving Bananas</title>
<content type="html">I had a banana idea outside Trader Joe's and ended up giving a guy two bananas. They cost 46 cents. No tax necessary. Sure, I bought him a wrap he asked for, and I bought him two roma tomatoes he probably didn't eat. But let's focus in on the bananas. As I walked away, a miracle happened: a realization entered or crossed or found my mind. I think of it as a revelation: AI is going to take away a bunch of our jobs - more people need to be doing stuff like this.

I spent the next 3 months grinding, working almost non stop trying to make sure I maximize impact, scale quickly, all the stuff... Sitting behind a computer, talking to important people who gave no bananas to anyone. I landed on being another boring Food Rescue Organization (FRO) only to realize how much effort it would be and how much it would cost to pay commissions to the people who go into all these damn hotels, restaurants, and what have you. I gave up. For a month and a half. I figured maybe the people would just starve to death cause I couldn't make it happen in time.

Sure, giving up led to some fun. But I had an experience that changed everything and came out of it realizing: I just need to buy bananas myself and start giving them to the homeless and hungry. So I picked up where I left off (I had given 30, then 150 bananas). I gave 300 bananas, then a friend gave $25 so I gave 408. Then my best friend Chad gave $400 so I'm going to give 1739. Then a church said I could plug my banana idea which I'm going to do tomorrow. My goal is to exceed the capacity of St Anthony's and Glide by my 40th birthday on May 23. That means 7,000+ bananas a day. Their cost will be 30,000% greater than ours.</content>

<title>San Francisco, CA – The Vanilla Biodiversity Conservatory</title>
<content type="html">Vanilla is the world's most popular spice and yet it relies on a single plant clone, creating a genetic bottleneck risk for the entire production. On top of that, the vanilla genus contains nearly 150 species across 4 continents. Most are completely unstudied, no photos of them even exist. These species are at risk: their habitat is slowly being destroyed, and due to their unique biology, seeds aren't viable for banking. Their survival relies on someone, somewhere, keeping a plant alive. Moreover Vanilla holds a unique genetic biodiversity, a potential resource for medicine, food security, and ecosystem resilience.

This is why I founded the Vanilla Biodiversity Conservatory, the world's only ex situ conservatory dedicated exclusively to the genus Vanilla. Based in San Francisco, we locate and secure the rarest species on Earth and propagate them for research and future generations. Among our future projects: building the first molecularly authenticated genetic record of the living genus, and creating the first global directory to connect vanilla researchers who currently work in isolation from one another.</content>

<title>Sydney – Opening the Doors: 50 Free Tickets to Cruise</title>
<content type="html">We are delivering a targeted access initiative alongside Cruise, a queer theatre work presented at the Seymour Centre that centres queer history, memory and survival.

This project focuses on who gets to be in the room. While Cruise speaks directly to LGBTQIA+ experience, particularly the legacy of the HIV/AIDS crisis, many of the people most connected to these histories face financial barriers to attending theatre. This creates a disconnect between the work and the communities it represents.

Our aim is to address that gap in a direct and practical way. By prioritising access for older LGBTQIA+ people and those on low or no income, the project supports participation from community members who are often excluded from cultural spaces. It also creates conditions for intergenerational exchange, where lived experience and contemporary queer life can sit alongside each other.

Fruit Box’s work is grounded in extending theatre beyond the stage. This means creating space for gathering, recognition and shared experience. Ensuring the audience reflects the community is a key part of that. This project contributes to a more inclusive, representative and connected cultural environment, where queer stories are not only told, but experienced by those they belong to.</content>

    <title>Newcastle – Newy Food Adventures </title>
<content type="html">Newy Food Adventures was created 6 years ago in hotel quarantine in Sydney when we moved back from England. It’s sat there for 6 years until this year I had the courage to give it a go. Newy Food Adventures offers guided walking food tours in Newcastle connecting people to small businesses doing amazing things with food. The walking tours visit 5 different venues, with an opportunity to try the food, meet the passionate makers behind the food and understand the stories of Newcastle through food. I launched with Newcastle Food Month and have designed 2 curated food tours. All 5 tours have sold out which is so great! I’m now looking at dates for May and looking to continue to build the business tomorrow become a new visitor experience for Newcastle. </content>

<title>Washington, DC – Local Indie Author Book Shop</title>
<content type="html">I plan to start a “bookstore” in Dupont Underground featuring local, small-press authors who otherwise would have difficulty getting their books into a brick-and-mortar store. While I believe many people want to read local authors, it can be hard to know where to find their work. There is not currently a place in DC where you can physically pick up, peruse, and make a selection of a book by local authors, including those published by small presses.

Because of the economics of book selling, it is easiest and most profitable for stores to work with large distributors. Some sell local authors on commission, usually a 50/50 split, but for talented small press authors who typically earn a 15% royalty, this means losing money. Having a place to display and sell your book is a big deal to small press authors, not only for potential sales, but also as a sign of legitimacy.

Dupont Underground is an eager partner. They already host regular poetry readings and allow/encourage poets to sell books at the events. They even have empty bookshelves! They don’t, however, have the manpower, depth of knowledge about small presses, and available capital to build a curated inventory of books by local authors without the Awesome Foundation and me!

<title>Gloucester, MA – Cape Ann Families Bowl with Pride</title>
<content type="html">Cape Ann Pride is organizing the third annual “Cape Ann Families Bowl With Pride” event at Cape Ann Lanes in Gloucester—a fun, welcoming, family-friendly gathering that brings LGBTQIA+ people and their allies together in a safe and supportive space.
Planned for Sunday afternoon, May 31, the event invites families, teens, and community members from across Cape Ann to enjoy a relaxed afternoon of bowling, conversation, and connection.
This event has quickly become a favorite Pride event because it offers a simple and joyful way for people to come together. Bowling is accessible to all ages and creates a natural environment for people to meet, laugh, and build community.
For many LGBTQIA+ youth and families, spaces where they can gather openly and comfortably are still limited. This event intentionally creates a welcoming environment where everyone can simply show up, have fun, and feel supported.
Cape Ann Lanes has partnered with CAP to host the event, turning the bowling center into a vibrant community hub for the afternoon. By its third year, “Cape Ann Families Bowl With Pride” continues to grow as an event that strengthens community connections while celebrating Pride on Cape Ann.

    <title>New York City, NY – Photography 101 Series</title>
<content type="html">We are excited to announce that our April grant has been awarded to the photographer Hanna Wondmagegn's **Photography 101 Series**, a free / low-cost educational series aimed at demystifying the photography experience with a focus on community building and resource sharing through hands-on workshops and field trips. In partnership with [Sounds of Spotlight NYC (SOS)](https://www.soundsofspotlight.com/), a creative collective that supports Black and brown creatives through community events, education and community building, this series focuses on breaking down the technical skills, production and post-production experience, and the exhibition of works with industry leaders and community partners.

In Hanna's own words:

_The Photography 101 Series came from our communities experiences' with navigating the photography industry. From the person interested in picking up a camera to the veteran that's been in the industry for years, everyone has questions and it's often difficult and/or expensive to get them answered. Our series aims to provide a free to low cost educational experiences that will demystify the photography experience for communities that are often not included or barred from the industry. Through monthly sessions, field trips, and a final end of year group exhibition, this series combines community building and resource sharing designed to life everyone up and provide the foundational knowledge and networks to succeed on their terms._

_The core of what we believe in is that we have all the resources and knowledge we need in our communities and networks, and want to bring people into our series to learn from each other. That's where you come in! We are currently developing a lot of our programming for the year and are looking for community members who are willing to host, educate, sponsor, or support in any way. Specifically, we are looking for folks in the following categories who would be available for in person NYC programming in 2026: legal and tax experts that specifically work with artists/photographers; film, studio and digital photography experts; photography related businesses; photography agencies; photo editors, creative directors and producers that work with photographers; photography collectives and groups; professors or educators who either teach photography or have students interested in learning; and experts in photo editing software._

* If you are interested or would like to know more on how to support, please email hannawon72@gmail.com.
* If you are interested in attending the programming(s), follow [@hannawonphoto](https://instagram.comhannawonphoto) and [@soundsofspotlight](https://instagram.com/soundsofspotlight) on Instagram for updates!

<title>Disability – CaféLSA: Turning Coffee into a Sign Language Exper</title>
<content type="html">CaféLSA is Argentina’s first coffee shop fully operated in Argentine Sign Language (LSA), created by Deaf people to transform everyday interactions into inclusive, human experiences.

In a world designed for hearing people, Deaf individuals are often excluded from something as simple as ordering a coffee. At CaféLSA, we reverse that logic: sign language becomes the center, not the exception.

Customers don’t just consume a product — they experience a new way of communicating. They learn, adapt, connect, and leave with a deeper understanding of Deaf culture and language rights.

CaféLSA is not just a café. It is a living space of accessibility, dignity, and social transformation. We prove every day that inclusion is not charity — it is innovation.

With this project, we want to make that first interaction easier, more welcoming, and more powerful for everyone who walks through our doors.

**What our grantee is saying:** “Receiving this award means that our vision is being seen and valued globally. CaféLSA is more than a café — it is a space where communication barriers are transformed into bridges, where sign language becomes the center, and where every interaction creates awareness, dignity, and connection. This support allows us to continue building a world where accessibility is not the exception, but the standard.”</content>

<title>Toronto – Questing Through Life @ Toronto Fringe Festival </title>
<content type="html">Questing Through Life @ The Toronto Fringe Festival is a youth-led theatre project by Dodo Tree Productions, a newly founded Toronto collective creating space for young artists in professional theatre. This summer, we are bringing our original play Questing Through Life to the Toronto Fringe Festival—Ontario’s largest theatre festival—at Soulpepper theatre for 7 performances. As one of the few shows in the Fringe Teen category (out of 120+ productions), our work is both written by and created for young people, led by a 17-year-old playwright and director with a predominantly under-19 cast with many making their professional debut—something rarely seen at the professional level.

Our project addresses a key gap in the industry: talented young artists often lack access to mentorship, experience, and professional connections to be able to perform in professional theatre productions. We support emerging performers in breaking into the industry and building relationships through the festival. Our seven-person ensemble and I collaborate to bring this project to life, not only through performance but also by engaging in production, and marketing, building real, hands-on experience.

Questing Through Life is where things gets even more awesome. The play blends coming-of-age storytelling with Dungeons &amp; Dragons, bringing tabletop roleplaying into scripted theatre. Four friends find their DnD campaign bleeding into real life, gaining the power to shape their reality—until control, identity, and consequence catch up with them. The show moves between grounded realism and melodramatic fantasy, featuring puppetry, interactive elements like dice-rolling, and a merging of two worlds on stage. It’s a story about growing up, and what happens when imagination stops being “just a game."

This project is both experimental and deeply human. It introduces DnD to new audiences, expands what theatre can look like, and gives young artists a real platform to create at a professional level.</content>

    <title>Los Angeles, CA – Eternal Canvas</title>
<content type="html">Eternal Canvas is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping grieving families navigate their grieving process through complimentary, hand-painted, personalized portraits. At its surface, the work may appear to be about art, but for the families we serve, these portraits become something far more enduring. They are not simply images; they are vessels of memory, reminders that their loved ones lived, were loved, and continue to hold presence in a world that can so quickly move forward without them. For many families, grief is something they are forced to carry alone, often compounded by financial barriers that make healing resources inaccessible.

Eternal Canvas was created to challenge that reality.

Every Sunday at 6am, my dad and I sharpen knives at the Brentwood Farmers Market to fund my work. By offering portraits free of charge, the organization ensures that remembrance is not a privilege reserved for those who can afford them. What began as a single portrait, has now become seventy families served across Los Angeles. Each piece represents not only an individual life, but a commitment to honoring stories that might otherwise go unseen.

Eternal Canvas has partnered its work with Taking Time Bereavement Support, El Segundo Museum of Art, and Indivisible Arts. These partnerships not only validate the impact of our work, but also allow us to integrate our mission into other communities and bereavement/artistic conversations.

As the demand for this work grew, so did the responsibility to meet it. To continue serving families with the same level of intention and quality, I built a team of over 20 artists from across the world, each bringing unique styles and perspectives, many of whom have experienced personal loss themselves. With this team, we are able to expand our reach while ensuring that every portrait reflects the life, personality, and presence of the person being remembered. Eternal Canvas exists to make every life remembered and every story honored.

    <title>Ottawa – Wingonomics</title>
<content type="html">The latest Awesome Ottawa award goes to Charles Garfinkle to support a platform enabling artists to receive patronage in chicken wings.

“This project evolved out of [an album of songs] (http://www.wingalong.com/) I composed about wings,” explains Charles, “inspired by my experiences growing up eating wings in Ottawa.”

“As part of my performance, I decided to only accept chicken wings for my music, and so I am building a [digital wing economy] (http://www.capitalwing.co) to enable that possibility for myself and others.”

“In this system,” explains Charles, “any money an artist receives is held in reserve and only released when they upload a receipt verifying a purchase of chicken wings.”

“If they need cash, the system supports them selling their claims on wing-reserved money to anyone who eats wings – typically at a friendly discount. Fans can eat for you!”

“Eventually,” says Charles, “I’ll accommodate other popular food items, allowing any artist to connect with their fans not just over art but over their favourite foods, by literally accepting that food as payment for their work.”

Charles has been sharing his songs in living rooms, at house parties, and at the occasional open mic for over a decade — first while pursuing a PhD in neuroscience, and later while building a software company with friends. He recently moved back home to Ottawa from California, purportedly “to do the wing thing.”</content>

<content type="html">Trans activist and OG of Providence's South Side, Jesse Andrews, is creating a book tentatively titled, “I’m from the South Side: The Life and Journey of Jesse Andrews, a.k.a. Lil’ Kim.” The work is accompanied by a photo exhibition produced in collaboration with Jorge Ureña.

As Andrews describes, the importance of this project is threefold: "1) to uplift my life and survival as an unsung leader whose radical activism has created possibilities for the next generation 2) to shed light on trans women of color history in the state because my story is bound up in the stories and care networks of other trans women 3) provide a space of inspiration and knowledge sharing for the younger generation of trans women and non-binary people during this moment of heightened transphobia and state repression of trans lives."

The exhibit is set to open June 28th at Arts by Ariel, a venue that has long served Black and Brown artists and activists. Later plans include work at AS220 (August) and the South Side Cultural Center (November) to accompany Trans Day of Remembrance Celebration of Life.</content>

<content type="html">Located just outside of Centre Hall, Penn’s Prairie Park is a 165‑acre community park designed to be a welcoming destination for visitors of all ages and abilities. Existing features include trails, a library ADA StoryWalk, two athletic fields, an 18‑hole disc golf course, a pavilion, and a new playground. Eagle Scouts have added a rustic pavilion, fire pit, picnic tables, and a redeveloped bike skills course, while the Girl Scouts have created a small pollinator plot. After years of steady volunteer effort, the park is beginning to come into its full potential.

In Spring 2025, the Park Board designated four acres as a Pollinator Parcel. The goal is to transform the existing meadow, already largely free of invasive species, into a thriving pollinator garden filled with native plantings and habitat features such as a solitary bee “hotel.” This project directly enhances the visitor experience by adding beauty, food and shelter for pollinators, and hands‑on educational opportunities for all visitors.

This grant will fund groupings of native perennials, 5 plant identification signs, and a solitary bee hotel. These are tangible, lasting improvements: native perennials will spread over time, offering blooms (pollinator food!) spring through fall, the bee hotel will support cavity‑nesting species for years, and the signs will help visitors learn to recognize and value native plants.

The project also invites broad community involvement. Two local organizations have already committed to assisting with planting, and the park will promote volunteer opportunities to the wider community. As the garden grows, it will serve as a living classroom. A scripted educational pollinator walk, already developed, will eventually be paired with four larger interpretive signs, and combined with this project’s signage and bee hotel, will enable any educator or community leader to guide groups through the space and learn about native species and pollinator conservation.

    <title>State College, PA – Happy Valley FitLink</title>
<content type="html">Happy Valley FitLink is an inclusive wellness program for neurodiverse individuals (intellectual disabilities, Autism, cerebral palsy). Our vision is to build an inclusive community where individuals with intellectual disabilities express themselves through movement.

We provide weekly adapted fitness classes for all ages and serve as an educational resource for participants and their families/caregivers through wellness seminars focused on whole-body health. We also hold special events to allow our group to experience other recreational opportunities availible in the State College area like fly fishing, pickle ball, rock climbing, and disc golf. Our program is entirely volunteer-run, and all services are free. We partner with PSU interns who help lead classes and support our seminars; many go on to careers in healthcare and other people-facing professions, where this experience shapes their ability to provide more inclusive, patient-centered care and advocate for improved accessibility for individuals with IDD across clinical and community settings.

We offer 4 weekly fitness classes: cardio drumming at Grace Lutheran Church in State College, group fitness at the State College YMCA, and two virtual classes for participants inside and outside the area. We also provide two weekly wellness education classes for LifelinkPSU, a special education classroom on Penn State’s campus.

Participation remains strong, but we have not updated equipment since 2021. We are also serving individuals with greater support needs and require funding to purchase new equipment and modify existing materials to improve accessibility, especially for participants unable to hold pool noodles used in drumming.

Since 2021, we have held 250+ fitness classes, 100+ wellness seminars, and hosted 40+ PSU student interns. We are seeking funding from 3 Dots to continue providing high-quality, inclusive wellness programming to the State College community.</content>

<title>Chicago, IL – The Real Steele: Messages From the Mic</title>
<content type="html">"Messages from the Mic" is a documentary that traces the life, resilience, and enduring legacy of Richard Steele, a pioneering Black radio disc jockey and television broadcaster whose voice helped define the sound and soul of Chicago.

In a city shaped by rhythm, struggle, and creativity, Steele’s cool, commanding presence cut through the noise, rooted in honesty, humor, and a deep connection to the people he served. More than an entertainer, he was a cultural anchor and connector, interviewing icons, challenging norms, and redefining what was possible for a Black broadcaster in one of America’s most influential media markets.

Yet behind the mic, Steele’s journey was shaped by private battles, systemic barriers, and the challenges of breaking &amp; sustaining new ground in spaces few had occupied. Directed by his granddaughter, Christen Slaughter, the film entwines archival footage, intimate reflection, and untold stories to paint a personal portrait of a man whose versatility, presence, and humanity made him a defining voice in Chicago’s cultural heartbeat.

Messages from the Mic honors not only Steele’s life, but the enduring role of Black radio as a keeper of cultural memory, where voices like his shaped a city’s sound, preserved its stories, and left an indelible mark on Chicago.

The Awesome Foundation Grant would directly fund a specific and essential part of the project: the digitization and preservation of archival materials connected to Richard Steele’s legacy, as well as partial compensation for crew during upcoming interview shoots.

A portion of the funds would be used to professionally digitize and restore rare photographs and historical media so they can be properly integrated into the documentary. These materials are central to the storytelling and help ground the film in the historical context of his work and impact in Chicago media.

The remaining funds would go toward supporting a small crew during production days, particularly camera and sound support during key interviews. This allows capturing high-quality material while maintaining a respectful and sustainable production process.</content>

<content type="html">Take a Jit to Fish™ is a community-based youth program in Orlando that combines fishing, STEM education, and mentorship to create a positive and hands-on learning experience for kids.

We are applying for this grant to host a free community fishing event where youth can learn real-life science concepts like buoyancy, ecosystems, and water conservation while also developing patience, discipline, and confidence.

This event will serve 30–50 youth, many of whom come from underserved communities with limited access to outdoor learning opportunities. Through this experience, kids will not only learn how to fish, but also gain exposure to positive role models, teamwork, and new possibilities for their future.

Take a Jit to Fish™ is about more than fishing—it’s about giving kids a safe space, teaching life skills, and creating moments that can change the direction of their lives.</content>

<title>San Jose, CA – DIY Air Purifiers for SJSU</title>
<content type="html">MBSJSU and CHC are collaborating to host a DIY air purifier build in September 2026 to give SJSU students/staff and the broader South Bay community access to clean air. This will be hosted at SJSU and open to all. We will start the build with an educational workshop highlighting the importance of clean air to fight the spread of disease and air pollution. Following that, CHC will demonstrate how to collaboratively assemble an air purifier and explain the different components and steps. This process involves attaching a cardboard shroud to the front of the box fan, hot-gluing weatherstripping to the perimeter of the back of the fan, and attaching the fan to an air filter with elastic bands. Once attendees finishing building purifiers, MBSJSU will talk about how to use and maintain the purifiers in their spaces.

Within the Bay Area, South Bay has worse air quality than its neighboring parts in part due to traffic, weather, and topography (source: Bay Area Air Quality Management District). Local air pollution research shows that this is an environmental justice issue: negative health outcomes are concentrated in low-income neighborhoods near highways and industrial areas. CHC regularly hosts events that empower people to provide clean air for themselves and neighbors in Oakland and San Francisco, where our organizers are based. However, we also get many air purifier requests from the South Bay which are harder to fulfill. This is why we are collaborating with MBSJSU, a group who also values clean air and is eager to improve the wellbeing of their community. By sharing our DIY skills and air quality expertise we will enable more advocates and folks in South Bay with the skills necessary to combat air pollution, smoky days, and illness.</content>

    <title>Oahu, HI – Kupuna Paws Foundation</title>
<content type="html">Every day on Oʻahu, kūpuna (elders) are forced to make an impossible choice: stay in the hospital and worry about who is feeding their dog, or go home too soon to take care of the pet that keeps them going. Some delay surgeries. Some surrender animals they have loved for years — not because they stopped caring, but because they couldn't find anyone to help. Kupuna Paws exists to make that choice unnecessary. We are a Hawaiʻi-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free, volunteer-powered pet support to low-income kūpuna aged 65+ on Oʻahu — dog walking and pet care support visits, temporary foster care during hospitalizations, and transportation to veterinary appointments. All services are free.

Since launching in June 2025, we've served 12 kūpuna households and 14 pets, delivering 600+ pet support visits and 350 foster care days — at just $410 per household, powered almost entirely by volunteers.

During the pilot, one kūpuna was hospitalized for emergency surgery with her dog left tied outside alone. She was in tears — not about the surgery, but about her dog. A nurse was making separate trips to her home just to check he had food and water. Kupuna Paws stepped in, arranged a foster placement, and covered all supplies. Today she is still recovering — focused on healing, knowing her dog is safe and waiting for her.

No program like this exists anywhere in Hawaiʻi. We are building the first.</content>

    <title>Pittsburgh, PA – PGH: Pretty Good Harmonies</title>
<content type="html">Pretty Good Harmonies (PGH) is a pop-up choir in Pittsburgh, which means it is a no-commitment, no-skill necessary choir where a group of people come together on Sunday afternoons to learn how to sing two beloved pop-songs in harmony alongside a live band! PGH is for anyone who sings in the shower, belts in the car, hums a lullaby to their child at night, misses their choir days from youth, or has never been in a choir but is choir-curious. Imagine a giant, collective karaoke!

We’ve held two PGH gatherings (one in November and one in February) and they have been a HUGE success. Each event has had around 40 adults and 10 children. The adults have built connections, the kids took it upon themselves to choreograph moves to teach to everyone, and we’ve belted songs like Pink Pony Club (Chapel Roane) and Dreams (The Cranberries) in harmony that is even better than pretty good! Our plan is to make this a big, monthly, public event held at a local, family-friendly brewery. And then, eventually host additional pop-ups in neighborhoods around town.

Our team includes myself (the project manager), a choir director, and four talented musicians. Our goal for PGH is to bring people together to create connection and joy, reconnect to a sense of creativity they may not have had access to in years, and help people realize that we are better together, the whole is always more than the sum of its parts.

For La Guelaguetza 2026, a total of six dance groups, five singers and a live band from California will perform. The artists performing traditional folkloric dances native to Oaxaca are paired with music from each region. The audience learns of the meaning and historical context of each of the day's performances in both Spanish and English. Each dance is executed with corresponding costumes, offerings and movement to signify unique indigenous, historical, and cultural significances.

In addition to the colorful performances, visitors can enjoy a variety of authentic Mexican food to eat and craft vendors offer jewelry and other handmade items for purchase. Several area non-profits offer bilingual information about health screenings, voter registration, and library services, immigration and naturalization, as well as, tourist information for Dutchess County and the surrounding Hudson Valley.</content>

<title>Detroit, MI – Culture to Civic: Detroit Youth Takeover</title>
<content type="html">BlackCount is launching Culture to Civic: Detroit Youth Takeover, a bold, high-energy pop-up experience where culture meets leadership and young people step into their voice in real time.

This is not a panel. Not a workshop. Not another program youth sit through.

This is an immersive, youth-led experience designed to feel like the spaces they already love—music, conversation, creativity, but with a deeper purpose. Through live elements, storytelling, and interactive moments, young people will explore leadership, identity, and the power they hold to shape their communities.

The experience will be activated in a dynamic Detroit cultural setting, such as a summer gathering or live venue space, where youth are already present and engaged. By meeting young people where they are, we create a space that feels authentic, accessible, and energizing.

Detroit is a city rich in culture, resilience, and influence. This project taps directly into that energy by creating a space where youth don’t just participate, they lead. They share perspectives, connect with mentors, and see firsthand how culture, entrepreneurship, and community impact intersect.

What makes this project “awesome” is that it flips the script. Instead of asking youth to adapt to traditional systems, we bring leadership and opportunity into spaces that already feel real to them. It creates a moment where young people can see themselves differently.

This is the first activation of a model BlackCount plans to expand, turning culture into a gateway for confidence, connection, and leadership.</content>
