Through this programming participants will have access to essential information about local services and resources that can support them in rebuilding their lives. The core sessions cover topics like housing, employment, and education, as well as relationships with oneself and others (including healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, self-esteem and coping mechanisms, and reuniting with children). The initial round of 8 sessions is ongoing and will conclude in July 2022. In addition to repeating these with new groups later on, other planned topics include an essay skills workshop to prepare the women for various applications or potential college courses, and creative writing to counter stigmas about women and incarceration.
By equipping the participants with information and writing skills, their ability to successfully return to their respective communities upon release is greatly enhanced. Each woman will know where to go for support around housing, employment, and other necessities that provide stability in their lives. The positive impact will also extend to their loved ones, especially any children they may have been separated from, who may be able to return to their care.
I am a Chicago Area Schweitzer Program Fellow for the 2022-2023 program year. All Fellows design and implement a community service project; mine is to facilitate a Reentry Program at Cook County Jail Women's Division.
UPDATE November 2022
I wanted to update you that thanks to the grant, I was able to give out care packages for the ladies in my groups at Cook County Jail earlier this week! There were three options that I put together based on the preferences the ladies had. These will allow the ladies to feel clean and style their hair, which may seem like a small thing, but in the dehumanizing jail environment it can make a huge difference. I handed out about 25 care packages and had a few more left over, they will go to whoever joins the groups next.Jenna PasanenReentry Program for women at Cook County JailUnited StatesChicago, ILhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/fr/chapters/chicagotag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/1886982022-07-19T00:00:00Z2022-07-22T18:53:58ZSan Jose, CA – Costumes for new dance suiteEnsamble Folclórico Colibrí (EFC) Is a Mexican folklore organization. Founded in 2015 under the directorship of Maestro Arturo Magaña, EFC’s mission is to promote the pride of identifying as LGBTQ+ Latinx through the art of Mexican folklórico dance. EFC also seeks to preserve our customs and traditions through cultural and educational projects as well as staged performances. We create a unique folklorico group where the LGBTQ+ Community has the creative platform to express and validate our sexual and cultural identity.
This year, EFC is performing at several Pride celebrations throughout the Bay Area. EFC also performs at schools, usually followed by discussions with students and Arturo Magaña sometimes speaks on panels about his role as the founder of EFC. Since live events have started happening again, EFC has been performing several times a month. We perform throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and have traveled around California and to Seattle as well.
There are two distinct groups of people who benefit from this project: The dancers themselves and the audience. The dancers benefit by becoming part of a tight knit community of people who care about the same things: art and equality. The audience benefits by seeing something they’ve never experienced before. Since EFC is the first LGBTQ+ folklorico group, most people have never seen men in folklorico dresses or women in charro suits. In EFC, dancers are referred to as “boots” and “skirts.” The “boots” wear traditional male costumes and the “skirts” wear traditional female costumes. Any dancer, of any gender, can be either a “boot” or a “skirt” and some dancers switch between roles in different dances.
Over the next year we will be learning new material from different states of Mexico. Each state has its own unique style of dance, its own costumes and its own music. We will be adding the states of Hidalgo, Guerrero and Michoacan Tierra Caliente. Each state will be taught by a guest Maestro.

These "modern gargoyles" are larger than life characters created to reimagine the historical significance of gargoyles as symbols of protection and implementing them in the public eye. These modern gargoyles appear as Steel creatures and bearers of light, greeting the public face to face on the city streets and inviting curiosity. These pieces are installed via wheat pasting, a temporary and biodegradable art practice that allows for a greener approach to street art. The goal is to expand the "Modern Gargoyle Project" farther across the city of Pittsburgh, attaching a unique QR code to each gargoyle. When this QR code is scanned by taking a picture of it, the public will be able to further interact with the work as they see it come to life before their eyes. These codes will link to hand crafted animations of each gargoyle, as well as pins to other gargoyles located throughout the city. This creates a game of discovery and a city wide conversation, as these works are accessible to anyone. These art works are not confined within gallery walls or exhibition spaces, and further fuels creative curiosity in the public eye. The performances evoke the sense of a sea-based "living myth" wherein the audience become creative agents in the reshaping of those cultural norms that govern their milieu. She will be expanding her adaptive learning tools to students not currently served. AwesomeStPaul Trustees chose her project because it will help many more 6th through 12th grade students achieve their academic goals.
In her words " I would like to start a closet that works to provide supports for students at Humboldt High School. These tools would provide adaptive, fine, and sensory-motor assistive technology options for students in 6th through 12th grade. Currently, only students in special education with specific accommodations have access to specific tools. The project I am proposing would provide access to these supports, ts’ needs that would promote an increased level of independence and participation in many of their academic settings.
This closet would contain items that would be as simple as spring loaded scissors and as more intensive as technology supports that make access and navigation on their iPads easier. Because each student's needs will differ, each student and their educators will have the tools to help develop and explore additional supports in specific educational needs.
With the addition of this closet, I will continue my training of all staff to be aware of how these tools can have a positive impact with their students and they can get access to the tools immediately. Currently, we can have conversations about the tools but then we have to wait to get access to them. With the closet located at Humboldt, we could more easily find the support that is the right fit for each student. Collecting data on the effectiveness of the supports, and the conversations that accompany this, is critical to helping students develop self-advocacy skills that continue well beyond their high school years.
The demongraphics of Humboldt is a 6-12 school on the West Side of St. Paul, MN. The enrollment is 1,065, with 159 students on IEPs. Humboldt also is the hub for the Multi-Lingual Learners. Bug Pit Collaborative Arts is a new Ypsilanti-based group that seeks to create an environment to empower and platform local artists of all mediums. The Debut Summer Play Festival is our first project ever and we are so excited!
For the Festival, we have collected 6 scripts from local playwrights and brought together a team of local stage managers and directors. Our goal is to create a low-cost, low barrier to entry space for these artists to create a show! Often in this industry, local or community theatre can off-put the cost burden on the artistic team of actors and directors who are working for free, and we are trying to create a space where that is not the expectation.
We have already put down a security deposit for Riverside Arts Center, and we will be renting the space from August 1st through 7th, with performances on the 4th through 7th. Set to a score of indigenous percussion and folkloric guitar, the production features a blend of shadow puppetry with three dimensional rod and wearable puppets alongside human actors. Thirteen year-old Yamel, an undocumented immigrant in hiding, navigates a treacherous emotional and sociopolitical landscape through interaction with the folkloric spirits of her cultural heritage. Just outside the paper thin walls of the apartment where Yamel is concealed, immigration agents move door to door, searching for the undocumented. Inside, the legendary spirit characters of Yamel’s childhood nightmares circle ever closer, seeking to steal her youthful essence. El Viejo carries a sack full of children he has stolen, and wants Yamel for his collection. His hands are everywhere, reaching for her from inside couches and cupboards. Las Lloronas’ many faces seek to claim Yamel in exchange for the children she lost to drowning. La Lechuza, a witch in owl form, is drawn to the power of Yamel’s dwindling childhood. An unexpected development in Yamel lifeline thwarts the spirits and aligns their purpose with Yamel's in a transformative journey. Together they rally the human and spirit world against the agents who seek to control and expel la gente from the borderlands. Our outreach events consist of the distribution of life saving materials, administration of wound care, coordination of vaccines, initiation of a clean up and beautification of the neighborhood we serve in, and transportation and assistance into local treatment facilities. Our wound care station provides people suffering from minor abrasions, cuts, and sores with basic medical support such as a cleaning of the wound, triple antibiotic application, and a wrapping of the wound.
Another aspect of our Outreach events is the provision of vaccines at no cost. Our organization has coordinated and partnered with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health to provide those we serve with Flu, Hepatitis A/B, Covid 19, and Pneumonia vaccines. The Department of Health sets up a table and tent next to ours, and we refer people to get vaccinated. There is a large stigma around the Covid 19 vaccine among the population we serve, which our staff and volunteers actively attempt to reduce. Our clean up and beautification efforts is another aspect of our events. Each Outreach event, we leave the area cleaner then we found it. We also provide a safer environment, as we pick up used needles, and turn them into the needle exchange in Kensington.
The last aspect of our Outreach efforts is the provision of transportation to treatment facilities. As stated above, during our events, our team gets an opportunity to engage with the community we serve at a one on one level. During these engagements, team members are encouraged to discuss the availability of transportation to anyone willing to begin their recovery journey, and go to treatment. To date, our team has transported forty seven individuals off the street, and into treatment. In February 2022, we launched "Raven Corps Treats". Raven Corps Treats are vegan "nice crispy treats" that we're making and selling at 12 local businesses in Portland in addition to pop-up sales and mail orders. The goal is to raise both funds for our work at The Raven Corps and awareness for our Ravens' anti-oppression activism.
Treats come in two varieties: the Classic and the Signature Flavor. Signature Flavors are developed by a different Featured Raven each month. The Featured Raven also comes up with a creative title for their Treat and creates an educational video about a specific issue of oppression they're passionate about, complete with a clear call to action. QR codes on each Treat take buyers to our website to learn more about that month's Featured Raven and their advocacy. For example, this month's Featured Raven is MIles. They chose to focus on anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation that targets youth; their flavor is Fruity Pebbles, and they named their Treat "Gay!". Hrm where to start?? :)
Okay... for about 25 years we have run FREE birth support/birth story circles in the Hunter. BUT... for most of that time, they were in parks and churches etc. AND they were only ONE event per month OR less.
I was helping to run those meetings and I was a pregnant mum enjoying those meetings too! From about 2015-2019
After I had my last baby, I realised that the service was leaving women for a long time with no emotional connection and/or support. Sure they have medical support - but there is a big gap in what women desire and NEED and what the government system can provide - especially EMOTIONALLY.
I had a BIG dream, I wanted us to rent and run a full time, physical space and service! I fundriased for about three years and when I had saved up $5000 we did it - the NEWCASTLE BIRTH MOVEMENT space was birthed!!! (in 2019)
We rent two rooms and have workshop room access in a shared community building at Hamilton.
We are totally independent of all systems and are run by women, for women (and families too, of course we are also very child/baby and partner friendly!)
The BIGGEST challenge we face is ongoing RENT costs.
But, we are working super super hard (and have been for three whole years now) to make sure that we continue to succeed, continue to grow, learn and develop and become comfortably, long term , sustainable.
We have many ways that we fundraise and your $1000 grant would be a delightful and very appreciated part of that.
WHAT DO WE DO?
Now that we are a physical space we are proud to support women DAILY - as was my dream!
We provide:
* free Birth chats, for fears, worries, concerns, decision making and assertiveness skills, confidence, etc
* Free 1-2 hour birth workshops
* Free birth trauma/birth healing debriefs/counselling chats
* affordable/by donation hypnobirthing, birth ready yoga, mums and bubs yoga, mums and bubs sox week facilitated workshop programs, birth story circles and much more!

The workshops are targeted at all humans who self identify as 'odd'.
Our art experiences are held in queer, POC and neurodivergent friendly spaces and venues and aim to connect people and build bridges between the sub cultures and communities we are part of.
We are based back in Sydney now after the devastating floods that wiped out our Northern Rivers town. Through practicing art together and working on a collaborative piece or process, participants are guided by the facilitators to open their hearts and reconnect. We trialed this model recently with a group of 15 oddballs in a Newtown venue.
We propose a series of 3 workshops using the mediums of 'painting and alchemical paper weaving', 'Tarot collage' and 'Drawing the Shadows'. The last workshop of this series will be accompanied by live music.
This project will make Sydney more awesome by providing art experiences that help queers, POC, neurodivergent and other people who wouldn't normally feel comfortable in mainstream art workshops connect with their emotions and their shared humanity. WFTDA, the largest international roller derby association, has proposed local tournaments to help get derby back on its feet. State College Area Roller Derby(SCAR) was selected by WFTDA to host one of these tournaments in October of 2022. This would be a two day tournament bringing teams from across the East Coast to the Centre County region for a family friendly event that is open to the public. Additionally, the tournament would highlight gender inclusivity in sports. WFTDA, and SCAR, are strong supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community, and we look forward to promoting these values at the event.
This would be the biggest and most ambitious event SCAR has taken on in its 12 year history. We are excited about the opportunity to reintroduce roller derby to central PA, highlight Centre County as a premiere WFTDA location, support gender inclusive sports, and celebrate SCAR Derby's 12th anniversary.

We have recently created a greenhouse-classroom in the area of the only school in Dabnik where we grow edible flowers and herbs, and now we are step-by-step creating more biodiversity in the area outside the greenhouse, too.
Pollinators and bugs are important for every garden. Some insects are beneficial for pollinating the flowers of the crops, and some of them also keep detrimental insects away. Humans don’t always like bugs, we tend to kill them and keep them away from our homes.
Climate chaos is creating tough conditions for millions of species on the planet, including the insects. Moreover, as humans expand to more and more territories by building homes, farms and factories, they seize or destroy homes of many insects, too.
Our awesome project is about building an Insect Hotel together with the school children, as well as creating an about 50-100 sqm area with diverse flowers and plants in front of our greenhouse classroom which will support a variety of insects in the area.
An insect hotel gives a safe space for them to build homes and reproduce. This is especially important for the insects that do not live in colonies but are solitary, such as ladybugs, butterflies, solitary bees. Insect hotels are places where they can hibernate in wintertime.
Building and monitoring an insect hotel, as well as planting and maintaining the little garden around will be a wonderful educational activity for the kids at school. They will learn to love and appreciate the bugs. We have already held a couple of classes about biodiversity and the connection of each and every species on the planet. So this will be a really good second step of practical learning.

Their recordings are launched into the HumanRecord : an animated, spatially-responsive, dynamic and ever-expanding AR sculptural gallery with voices of participants from all over the world.
The Tribeca Film Festival will be ReachYou's global premiere this June as an Official Selection in their Immersive category, which will bring around 4,000 people to the work in-person as well as thousands of others to satellite sites and at home.
We have the chance to build an intimate environment that will draw visitors away from the hubbub of the festival, giving them enclosed, warm spaces to record their intimate responses to deepening prompts like “what grief, tiny or profound, are you experiencing right now?” and to contribute their voices to the HumanRecord.
ReachYou is singular in the way that it elevates Augmented Reality to a socially-engaged, immersive, contemplative art experience. It addresses the gap in our cultural conversations around grief and loss; and cultivates a feeling of oneness between strangers.
This work is Humane Technology: it’s socially responsible, allowing us to deepen our own contemplation and our connection to strangers. And the physical space must mirror this value. As ReachYou changes our relationship with our phones and teaches us to slow down, so will the space signal to visitors that this is a place of rest.
ReachYou is a tool for cataloging what we stand to lose if we let our planet collapse, and the installation at Tribeca is integral to us maximizing this incredible opportunity for the world premiere of this body of work.

We model ourselves after practices from Disability Justice and mutual aid movements. We’ve developed a no-fee, fully-online arts residency program. It is designed to be flexible and self-paced to meet the needs of Disabled artists, as well as creators juggling complex personal and professional commitments that often create barriers to participating in traditional residency programs. Our primary goal is to introduce artists, creators, and arts leaders to accessibility practices (such as Audio Description, captioning and image description,) within an arts context, and to encourage the integration of those features during the art making process - instead of as an add-on done primarily by curatorial, editorial or institutional staff.
We believe that creators have the opportunity to build a more equitable and accessible Arts world, if they consider Disability Justice, Universal Design, and accessibility features at the core of their work. As artists ourselves, we’ve been exploring these concepts over the last few years - as individuals and within collaborative projects - and we see exciting opportunities for creative applications of accessibility practices that both serve their essential function and provide unique art experiences.
Our year-long program (launching with its first cohort this July) includes virtual community gatherings, an online forum, art prompts, collaborative projects, and Disability Art and Justice related guides. An essential aspect of our residency program will be monthly virtual community gatherings, which will provide an important space for residents to talk through ideas. These gatherings will be one hour events (hosted via zoom) in which our cohort discusses the specific Disability Arts and Justice related topic of that month, and explores ideas for creative and practical applications of accessibility features into their artwork.
**What our grantee is saying:** "Socially Distant Art is thrilled to start our second art residency cycle with the support of an Awesome Grant from the Disability Chapter! This grant will allow us to provide more robust accessibility services during our virtual community events, including ASL and CART services. By doing this, when entering town, residents and visitors experience a nice manicured stretch, pedestrians don’t have to walk in the road and visibility is improved making for a safer road. Kits for GMHS Guidance I respectfully ask for $1,000 grant to assist the Georgetown Middle Highschool Guidance Department with our communities youth mental health.
Ms. Kelly Francis has been a wonderful counselor to my daughter, a 7th grader at Georgetown Middle School, this year as well as many other students. After seeing first hand what a great job she is doing, and the concerning results from the recent student survey; I decided to reach out to see what I could do to help. In honor of Mental Health Awareness month, I would like to focus on our teens and who is caring for them.
During these pandemic years, our tweens and teens have lost the opportunity to practice important social skills. This year, with things opening up more and more, they are lost in how to navigate this difficult time of adolescence. Our school’s guidance office is hands-on every day with our kids helping them with open doors and practical advice.
Ms. Francis suggested that it would be helpful to have a budget to purchase things that might make those very personal meetings with students more comfortable when they come to her with a problem or needing to talk. A small package that tells them they matter and encourages them to reach out when they need it. Things like tissues, mints, small waters, encouraging items such as awareness bracelets or small inspirational gifts/books. I also asked my daughter and she thought this was a great idea and agreed to help me in making the choices as well as Ms. Francis. So those who will directly benefit will participate in the purchasing.
I recently picked up a “Be Well Georgetown” packet at the library (One of your first projects!) It really made my day and I hope to set up the guidance department with the funds and help to create something similar but geared toward our teens.
Please see attached letter for full description and contact information regarding survey questions. (Survey attached, Full Letter attached)

Our goal is to reconstruct the garden beds with native plantings around the School/Broadway sides of the library. According to Yes magazine, the impact of nonnative to native plants is the reduction by 96% of caterpillar biomass. If you are a bird, trying to rear your young, you have just lost 96% of your food source.
Our motivation is to increase the available food sources for the birds and other wildlife by creating three pollinator gardens designed and planted by the volunteers.
This initiative will target the planting of native species to address our changing climate locally. This project will demonstrate Rockport’s commitment to enhancing its resilience and scenic beauty by creating a dramatic and ecologically sound garden space that can be enjoyed by all.
In partnership with the Rockport Public Library we will provide a companion pamphlet with plant information for the public so people can see that it is possible for any of us to transform our outdoor space into a location where all pollinators can thrive.
The high visibility and accessibility of the library gardens make this a prime location where the GNTF can showcase ecologically viable, native plantings visitors and residents can enjoy and envision in their own gardens.Rockport Library Garden volunteers have often chatted with visitors to Rockport who are drawn to this site as a photo op to document their visit to Rockport.
This project will prove what a truly awesome place Rockport is to visit, live and work.

An Indigenous Healing JourneySweet Medicine is a volunteer program, with an Indigenous "Traditional" Elders Council. Our project will bring flowers & fresh vegetables to a flowerless food desert where the nearest grocery store is kiles away. Local seniors will maintain the garden through a partnership with the District's Deptartment of Parks & Recreation (DPR). Currently, 95% of our residents are over 50 years of age. Additionally, all units in this building have been dedicated to affordable housing since I purchased it in February 2005.
We are also installing an art mural on the street-facing side of the building. I envision this space being used for pictures and just simply adored by the residents.

Our organization offers character development and practical life application workshops, annual Speak Love Conferences, The Future is Bright Summit, anti-violence training, and a multitude of hybrid community events both virtual and in-person that focus on creating awareness about teen dating and domestic violence.
Our mission is rooted in the belief that “Prevention is Key!” WSO strives to give a voice to the youth and young adults of Hawaiʻi, by empowering them with education, platforms for action, and a voice. These opportunities provide participants with the necessary tools to speak out and take a stand against dating violence.
Our primary focus currently is to provide preventative education to young men and women in middle school through college in the State of Hawaiʻi, with the goal to one day expand our services nationwide. This specific age group experiences dating violence at staggering numbers each year. Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner. Young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of dating violence almost triple the national average with about 43% of college women reporting violent and abusive behaviors in their relationships. Violent relationships that happen in adolescence put victims at risk for eating disorders, risky sexual behavior, substance abuse, and further dating violence.
Most recently we virtually hosted 100+ students ages 13-18 for our annual Speak Love Conference in February 2021. The event which discussed teen dating violence and domestic violence in depth was a huge success and garnered wonderful feedback, engagement and participation from the students who attended. We aim to build upon this momentum for our next educational series: The Future is Bright Summi

“Mamma Bear, Cruz, and the ‘Lucky 12’ all live together in an area called Pig Paradise,” explains Sarah. “It’s an area filled with all the things they love, as we make it our mission to provide them with the best life possible, and help showcase their true nature to the world. This summer, we want to provide them with more space to roam, graze, sun tan, and play.”
“The Pig Paradise expansion project,” she continues, “includes clearing, seeding, and fencing in land to provide the pigs with additional forested and grassy acres, and a large pig pond! It also includes three more nut trees, native to the land, so the pigs can do more of what they love most, walnut hunting! But most importantly, this new section of land is going to provide the pigs with more grass, because it will allow us to rest and safely rotate the land they utilize, preserving and making the most of their acres.”
“The project will be visible to the public when we resume tours,” says Sarah. “There are beautiful viewing points to see the vast land and the ability to walk beside the pig pond – even over a little bridge, which will be quite a sight to see! 14 happy pigs frolicking in their pond. A really unique, heart-warming, educational experience.”

This opera is in the style of Puccini or Verdi with lovely arias and a story based on The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. The music was composed by Westminster resident Garth Baxter. The libretto was written by Lisa Van Auken (a graduate from McDaniel College). The opera was 13 years in the making. It is absolutely beautiful.
There will be a 15-piece orchestra and a cast of 15 singers/performers under conductor Juliano Aniceto . A full stage crew, sets, and costumes are under the direction of Stephen Strosnider, technical director for theater arts at McDaniel College. The filming is being handled by Fraimework Productions on the stage at historic Alumni Hall at McDaniel College in Westminster. This project engages the whole realm of skills needed to put a production in place and includes a number of local residents.
This opera will put Westminster on the map as a place where great performances can happen, where art and music are still in the forefront of our lives. It will highlight the skills of local musicians and artists throughout Maryland. It will bring opera back to the masses and introduce this beautiful music to a new generation of audience members. Because this is a video production, it will be available forever rather than a one-time performance. Its reach will be unlimited.
Rehearsals begin in June. Recording takes place in June and July. The opera will be available for streaming this fall.
The Lily opera project is supported by local businesses and funded in part by a Community Arts Development Grant from the Carroll County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council. The Carroll County Arts Council is actively engaged in helping us get this project funded and produced.

Relax:
Relax հատվածը ամբողջապես հատկացվելու է հանգստին։ Այս մասում կլինի մեծ գրադարան, սեղանի խաղեր, երաժտություն, փափուկ «պուֆիկներ», տարբերվող նստատեղեր, ջուր/հյութ/սուրճ/քաղցրավենիքներ և ամեն ինչ, ինչ հարկավոր է դրսի ամբոխից հանգստանալու և հանգստին մատնվելու համար։ Այս հատվածը նախատեսված է բոլորի համար, ցանկացած տարիքի մարդ կարող է իր ժամանակն անցկացնել այստեղ, օգտվել մեր ծառայություններից, կարդալ իր ցանկալի գիրքը գրքային և օնլայն տարբերակով։Մարիամ Սահակյան«Արի՜» հակասրճարանArmeniaJavakhkhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/fr/chapters/javakhktag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/1997922022-06-21T00:00:00Z2022-06-22T02:05:16ZChicago, IL – Public Classes in the Ancient Art of PopotilloI've been giving free Popotillo classes every Wednesday at Anysquared studio, and would like to broaden my reach. Popotillo is an ancient mesoamerican art derived from prehispanic Aztec feather painting; this craft has been nearly lost two times, and to this day is little-known of even in the region it hails from. Because of this, I've worked to make the craft more accessible and to give classes free of charge to the public.
Popotillo makes use of beeswax coated canvases, to which colorful strands of dyed broom straw are pressed into then snapped to length by using one's own fingernail as a fulcrum (hobby knives may be substituted.) The strand segments then adhere due to the deformation of the wax to conform to the shape of each piece. In practice it's akin to tile mosaic, in that the wax isn't a glue per se, but that it hugs each piece when placed.
What sets Popotillo apart is that, when an artist pays careful attention to the direction of the grain, an anisotropic effect can present an optical illusion which makes the artwork seem almost 3D, or to shimmer like a Cat's Eye gemstone.
It's a truly breathtaking art form which I've been passionately researching and have, after finally becoming an accomplished practitioner, begun to teach to the public. I've been studying since 2015, and hope to some day become a grand master, of which only 5 remained until 2020 (we lost one during lockdown, sadly.) To date I've taught regularly here in Chicago, but also on tour to Maryland and the DC metro area. I would like to double down and teach short (yet formal) classes with a curriculum and structure.Breanne "Cari" CarlsonPublic Classes in the Ancient Art of Popotillohttp://Instagram.com/sepiarainbowUnited StatesChicago, ILhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/fr/chapters/chicagotag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/1893122022-06-20T00:00:00Z2023-08-31T20:03:16ZPittsburgh, PA – Reimagined RecyclingReimagined Recycling is a small and young non-profit recycling, education, and art facility located in Pittsburgh, PA. We are using our non-profit art education and sustainability know-how to create a space and knowledge base where sustainability and recycling are made more transparent and accessible through art, craft, and education. We are also working towards creating a local recycling system that is easy to understand and even fun and enjoyable to use!
Currently, we are focusing our endeavors on plastic waste reduction and the recycling of plastics (specifically #5s) that the city does not accept. We host small plastic collection events where community members can drop-off plastic they would like to recycle. They are taught how to sort and delabel and introduced to our recycling and recrafting process. During this time, participants are also encouraged to discuss their personal sustainability solutions, goals, and questions.Ashley McFarlandReimagined Recyclinghttp://reimaginedrecycling.comUnited StatesPittsburgh, PAhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/fr/chapters/pittsburghtag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/1919782022-06-20T00:00:00Z2022-12-19T22:35:34ZPittsburgh, PA – Act UpAct Up is a Creative Community Engagement organization and nonprofit startup for Black Trans and Queer (LGBTQ+) residents in Pittsburgh. In 2021 25 Carrick Ave Project took over ownership of this space from Economic Development South (as part of their organizational dissolvement). As the new stewards of this space we are looking to activate this space with free public programming including community block parties, back to school celebrations, and vendor fairs, and more.
We would love to host a Carrick Community Day this summer and welcome performers and organizations from around the area. Carrick as you may or may not know is the largest neighborhood in the city of Pittsburgh, but lacks a Community Development Corporation and other respresentation. We have taken on many of the responsibilities of a CDC as a small and young non-profit.
Over the last year we have hosted 8 community events that have brought in hundreds of community residents. These programs have focused on middle and high school students with the occasional school based FIRST Lego League (FLL) team extending the reach of robotics into upper elementary classrooms. Despite research that shows that integrating robotics into early childhood education helps close gender and SES-based gaps in achievements in STEM fields, there is virtually no reach of robotics programs into environments designed for early elementary and preschool ages. The exception are occasional specialized camp or afterschool activities offered at high end private schools. This gap is even more evident within Hialeah were even well-established elementary and middle grade programs such as FLL are a rarity. Of the 41 registered FLL teams within 25 miles of the 33012 area code, only 1 is located in the city of Hialeah and serves middle school aged students.
I intend to make robotics education accessible to kids within the city of Hialeah. Recognizing that opportunities exist for older children to participate in robotics, albeit at specific schools or within specific magnets not in Hialeah, my initial focus is on preschool and early elementary age children. Beyond providing an enrichment activity currently unavailable within the community my hope is that by engaging young children and their parents and exposing them to the benefits of robotics education, the demand for this kind of program in the schools and community will follow.
Using the Vex 123 robotics system I intend to host robotics workshops this summer at community spaces in Hialeah. These sessions using Vex 123 curriculum, will be designed for children and caregivers. As a no cost drop-in activity, I expect frequent new participants as well as returning families. Each session will be divided to address the needs of both these groups. Additional assistance will be provided for each session by a high school assistant.

Our free activity at public events each hosts between 150 and 250 artists of all ages, and the goal for this year is nine events, around 1,800 artists total. Young and old alike thrive with the low-pressure medium of rock painting and often find they want to continue the activity at home. Our growing Facebook group of over 1,700 sends rocks traveling around the FM area, around the country, and beyond.
At the first public event I ever did, a young boy came up to me almost crying and trembled, “I got paint on my hands!” as if he thought he’d be in trouble. I showed him my own paint-covered hands and reassured, “ALL good artists get paint on their hands!” His eyes widened as he exclaimed, “I’m an artist!” Since seeing the power of that word, I have encouraged everyone who paints at our events to call themselves artists. FargoMoorhead Rocks allows people to see themselves as artists in their own right.
FargoMoorhead Rocks events are inherently inclusive and uplifting for all. They are filled with the sounds of artists “oohing” and “aahing” at each other’s creations, instinctively encouraging one another. These ripples continue outward as painters are encouraged to hide their rocks for strangers to find, spreading joy and art exponentially from each event.
Some rocks get kept or presented as gifts, long-lasting, meaningful art that becomes part of people’s homes and offices. Other rocks make multiple reappearances on our Facebook page as they are re-hidden, even in faraway locations. There are also posts from people who see rocks but leave them for others to find, people who passed by but whose days were brightened nonetheless.
The simplicity of the project makes it easily fundable and executed. FargoMoorhead Rocks empowers people in their creative expression and brings pure joy to thousands each year.Em ChristieFargoMoorhead Rockshttps://www.facebook.com/groups/709315162571356United StatesCass Clayhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/fr/chapters/cassclaytag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/1868412022-06-15T00:00:00Z2022-08-09T21:54:13ZCass Clay – Transcribing LGBTQ Oral Histories In November 2017, the Red River Rainbow Seniors began an oral history project, “Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ Stories from the Northern Plains,” to gather the history of older LGBTQ people and their allies in their own words.
This project creates a permanent record for future generations about the experiences growing up in and/or living as LGBTQ people in this area from the 1930s to the present. They were part of the “pioneer generation.” Although a hidden minority who were viewed negatively by the culture in general as well as by many religious groups, they were a generation of “firsts” who blazed new paths, broke new ground, wrote new rules, provided new models. In addition, we are interviewing non-LGBTQ people who have been public allies of the LGBTQ community in this area.
Interviewees sign a legal release form that gives the Red River Rainbow Seniors and North Dakota State University permission to use the interview for scholarly, educational or literary uses. Because of the sensitive nature of these interviews, we respect the interviewees’ wishes as to whether their interview can be public, restricted for a period of years, or anonymous. The recorded reviews are transcribed and the original digital files and the transcriptions are deposited in the North Dakota State University Archives. With interviewees’ permission, the transcripts and digital interview files are available at “Digital Horizons: Life on the Northern Plains: North Dakota Voices from the Past.”
Funding for transcribing the interviews and creating the archives has been provided by FM Pride, by generous donors, and by Humanities North Dakota, a nonprofit, independent state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. To date, we have interviewed over 150 people and deposited 105 original digital files, the transcriptions, and additional biographical materials in the NDSU Archives.

We provide Socio-emotional programming to support girls to stay in school, learn STEM, and develop communication and leadership skills and support for their mental health. Girls also get fit and learn about nature by taking part in outings like hiking, swimming, horseback riding, wall climbing, and treetop hiking. Other day trips include going to sporting events, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, and Ontario Science Centre.
Girls and youth will be active and build athletic skills, learn new skills, and make fun memories that last a life-time, by taking part in outdoor and
physical activities, arts and crafts, mindfulness training, nature-based programs and more. The summer camp was developed with the same goals as our programs; we actively strive to enhance confidence and self-esteem, while giving campers the skills and tools they need in order to reach their full capacities. Each year, our camps provide girls and youth a chance to participate in fun, safe, and supervised activities, in which they may not have had the opportunity to experience.
Our Staff are trained individuals, passionate in helping girls reach their full potential. We have specific training in the Community Service Field, along with High Five certification and First Aid/CPR Level C. Girls Inc. of York Region's summer camp programming focuses on the development of the whole girl and includes activities that are specific to girls’ needs. We ensure the programs are fun and diverse and include different forms of facilitation to keep the girls interested and engaged.
The camp operates in weekly sessions, for girls and teens ages 6 to 13, from July 19 to August 22, from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm at Regent Acres Public School.

This artwork has been created for Eastern Beach, Geelong, Australia by Triage Live Art Collective artists Katerina Kokkinos-Kennedy and Sarah Walker.
'Bodies of Water' is an exploration of our lifelong relationship to the sea, as a place of nourishment, danger, and transcendence. The artists are fascinated by this unseen world which is brimming with life, but also a place compromised by environmental degradation and global warming. The work echoes between our bodies which are made of water, and the ocean that we are drawn to immerse ourselves in.
We have been developing this artwork throughout 2022, with the support of Platform Arts, and we are excited to be presenting the premiere season from November 3-6.
Each performance will see 15 audience members gathering at the Eastern Beach flagpole, and donning wetsuits and headphones. As the sun sets, the listeners walk around the Eastern Beach boardwalk, listening to a sound work about our bodies, the ocean, and the relationships between them. Sometimes poetic, sometimes funny, sometimes alarming, the work shifts in scale from the cosmic to the microscopic. When the audience has come full circle, onto the Eastern Beach sand, they gather and step into the dark water together for a night swim.
'Bodies of Water' uses art as a way to discuss climate change, the human impact on the sea, and ideas of custodianship and relationship with the water that sustains and surrounds us. Through an immersive, poetic experience, the work allows members of the public, who might not be scientifically or artistically engaged, to have a transformative experience that shifts their thinking about their local body of water. We have kept our ticket prices low ($10), to allow the work to be financially accessible to as many participants as possible, and are using our relationships in and around Geelong to encourage audiences who aren't regular art attendees.

Founded in 2010, Studio K offers the largest variety of dance/fitness classes for adults of all levels of ability than anywhere else in the nation, and we have been selected as an official campus location for the city for the last five years, providing a full day of donated classes, studio time, as well as our instructor talent, bringing a happy, fun day to adults in Central Florida each and every year!
This year, Studio K will also be making the exciting announcement that it will be partnering with the very well respected arts organization, CFC Arts, to offer a second Studio K campus location for National Dance Day on the East side of town, as well as future Studio K classes. This will greatly expand our reach, and allow us to bring the love of dance and the arts to adults no matter their age, size, or level of ability, the way we do best in a positive, supportive environment.
For Studio K, the most awesome thing in our world is always the members and guests we have the privilege to serve each day! We are deeply honored to host professional dancers, to Gastric Bypass patients, and adults at all levels in between, and help them to reconnect to their passion, find a new love of dance, build needed confidence, work on their health and wellness, or just find a positive outlet to connect with other adults in a safe, supportive home. Students receive support from stable adult role models at a formative time in their lives while being supported in completing school and learning skills that both excite and prepare them for jobs in automotive design, automotive repair, professional racing and other related trades. They benefit greatly when given the opportunity to learn a lucrative trade that can support them and their families without requiring a college degree.
Acceler8 trains and familiarizes youth aged 14-24 with the automotive industry and its many opportunities. Our target populations are high risk for gang involvement and interaction with law enforcement and the courts. The program reaches two high-needs groups in Los Angeles - high school students at risk for juvenile justice involvement due to behavior, academic status, and family situation; and “opportunity youth”- those 16-24 who are neither enrolled in school nor participating in the labor market. The majority come from troubled backgrounds and multi-generational poverty. In working alongside law enforcement officers, youth find direction and support that many are not receiving otherwise.
Acceler8 classes center on STEM learning via automotive technology, starting with basic engineering and science around the design of engines and drive train mechanics to the intricate computers and technology that tie systems together. They receive training in career and life skills, including resume and interview classes, dress/image, team building, communication, online and in person etiquette, and social skills. Students receive job placement opportunities and we provide scholarships to many students to assist with their success.

The program emphasizes that it is an adult's responsibility to keep kids from accessing guns and that every adult plays a role in keeping kids, schools, and communities safer.
Through their research, we know that guns are now the leading cause of death for children in the United States. A staggering number of children (4.6 million across the US) live in a home with at least one loaded, unlocked gun. We know from our conversations with the St. Paul Police Department that many guns are not secured in transit and that incidents of gun theft from vehicles are on the rise and greatly contributing to the number of illegal guns on the street. Commander Jeff Stiff of the Gangs/Guns Unit has shared that, if perpetrators break into 10 cars, they are likely to find a gun in at least one. The consequences of gun owners not securing their gun(s) endangers us all.
In our FREE presentations, we use our vast body of research to really awaken our audience to the scale and impact of unsecured guns. SMART is an acronym for all adults to use to remember the common sense strategies they can use to prevent children from having easy access to guns. In our community outreach (tabling at events, for example), we also offer printed materials and freebies to help spread the message on the importance of secure gun storage. Whether at presentations or community events, these conversations are always so impactful. Many people have relatives with guns, for example, and have never asked about their storage method. Many more know someone who isn't properly securing their guns. Having cable gun locks on hand to distribute is a quick, cost-effective way to change that. Every secured gun helps prevent child gun death or injury. My audience is Black and Afro-Latina women who’ve experienced natural hair bias; people interested in race relations and civil rights; university and high school educators who teach in Literature, Ethnic Studies, Arts, and Social Sciences departments; local cultural community centers; and our allies. I staged a pilot conference on this topic in August 2021 that drew registrants from nine states and the countries of Brazil, Canada, and Kenya! California Humanities and the San Francisco Arts Commission helped fund that pilot, but I have no funding for another event, despite requests for an encore. My related book Trauma, Tresses, & Truth: Untangling Our Hair Through Personal Narratives, comes out in Fall 2022 from Chicago Review Press.
Understanding that natural hair conferences are popular occurrences in cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, London, and New York—but not in northern California—my goal is to scale into an annual conference featuring Black and Latina essayists, poets, visual artists, and social justice speakers. You may get a taste of my pilot at https://trauma-tresses-truthuntangling-our-hair-thro.heysummit.com
Natural hair--braids, Afros, dreadlocks, other styles--has always been political, and today, remains persecuted. I founded TT&T to illuminate two conundrums: first, the absurdity of trying to enforce white haircare grooming standards on Black women; and second, the muted but invasive means by which society’s institutions shame our hair from infancy through adulthood.
California State Senator Holly Mitchell (now a L.A. Board of Supervisors member) introduced SB 188 in 2019.
