I am Maxim Manyak, a Men’s Lacrosse Player at the University of Notre Dame and the Founder of Pediatric Pep Talk.
This inspiration has since been reborn into an app-based platform that is in the business of connecting children’s hospitals, and the chronically ill patients and families they serve, with athletes across the country, allowing these patients to join a team no matter where they find themselves.
Our mission is to change the lives of children with critical illnesses, their families, and their treatment teams, one smile at a time. This is Pediatric Pep Talk, where a smile a day keeps the doctor away.
I am currently involved with 16 "teammates" from Beacon Children's Hospital, and am receiving videos from all 26 Varsity Teams and 800+ athletes from the University of Notre Dame. The goals of the Riley Roars at Potawatomi Zoo Project are: to increase student success in a freshman level course, Biology; increase classroom engagement; and build a sense of community within Riley High School. By using real world connections to help increase engagement, we give our students a stronger foundation for the Biology curriculum and content. This foundation also allows students to build critical thinking skills and helps them succeed early in a challenging course. We believe this will lead to increased success and enrollment in higher level science courses.
The project also includes upper level science students, specifically AP science students, who have experienced success both inside and outside the classroom. These students will serve in a mentoring capacity at the zoo while Biology students are working to complete their research. The mentor students will have the opportunity to guide Biology students through aspects of the scientific process. They will also foster relationships with the underclassmen. We hope these relationships will increase student success across their four years of high school, improving attendance and graduation rates.
Portions of this project have already been funded by generous grants from both the SB Education Foundation as well as the SB Alumni Foundation. Itʻs an audio archive that features personal stories of women over 70 who have maneuvered and continue to maneuver through America's shifting expectations on how a proper woman should look and behave.
The stories, sprinkled with humor and pathos, enlightens and entertains the listeners as they follow the true life journeys from the 1940s to today of Jeannette Paulson Hereniko and friends. Now there are 22 recorded stories on the website. More to come.
Not long ago women couldn't have a bank account or credit card without their husband’s written approval. Women were fired when they became pregnant, and most careers were limited to jobs that assisted the men on top. The personal stories on WILD WISDOM tell how women coped during these challenging times. The stories remind women to be vigilant so we do not go backward in our fight for equality.
Because of the quickly changing landscape of American politics and law, the time to finish and distribute my WILD WISDOM podcast series is NOW!
As an 82 year old woman, I feel a sense of urgency to pass on my stories.
But first I must raise money to produce a sound track for each story before the podcast series can be distributed.
GOALS of the podcast:
1. To expose the subtle and not so subtle pressures that influence the way American women believe they must behave and look.
2. To inspire women to realize their full potential by following their passion and persevere, regardless of discouragement.
3. To encourage women to value their dreams and personal histories and to share their stories.
4. To increase an understanding and respect for the wisdom of older women.

Cecília GobboRampa acessível para a Casa de SuzanaBrazilBrumadinhohttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/brumadinhotag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2024942022-08-18T00:00:00Z2022-09-26T14:31:37ZMiami, FL – College Readiness ProgramWe are Ketab, a non-profit that provides free college application assistance to underserved students in Miami. This year, we are planning to lease a physical location, so students from nearby neighborhoods can come to after school. Our awesome project is to provide a safe space for students to learn and excel in their pursuit of higher education. We have computers, books, resources, and mentors who are willing to work with out students, but we are short on funding when it comes to acquiring the space. This funding would help us to secure a space for our students.
In Miami, many of our students are under resourced and do not have the support they need as they apply to college. Our program provides this space for them to have free wifi, tools, and guidance on their college applications and personal statements. Moreover, this year, we are launching a College Readiness Program that is an eight week after school program to plan and execute college applications.
Vilma dos Reis NascimentoIGPAH NAS MIDIASBrazilBrumadinhohttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/brumadinhotag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2007662022-08-17T00:00:00Z2022-08-18T17:11:25ZGlasgow – Proudly BlacknScottishBEES (Black Ethnic Excellence Scotland) productions is a social enterprise that centers around curating experiences that celebrate the accomplishments of the black community in Scotland, from the intellectual to the highly artistic, our aim is to highlight, honor, and encourage the growth of every black individual in Scotland, in hopes to inspire and to cultivate a culture of excellence.
Homegrown in Glasgow, Scotland, Bees Productions is a newly founded scaling agency that seeks to create curated experiences for community, clients, and partner relationships to help transform the experiential landscape and creative footprint within the Black communities in Scotland. Through our various backgrounds and experiences, we aim to provide authentic, creative solutions to help enhance creative visions for the disadvantaged, and address the lack of diversity, and social inequality in Scotland. Our compact autonomy, and first-hand experience with racial discrimination, and inequality not only make us the perfect team to carry out these activities, but also put us in a strong position within the Black community, and we take that seriously.
Proudly Black and Scottish is a research and development project that has been curated with the aim of generating activities that fill the cultural gap in the entertainment/creative sector, particularly for the Afro-Caribbean diaspora community in Scotland. This will be achieved by providing specific opportunities for black creative individuals through medium-scale events including upskilling prospects with the project team, showcasing potentials as part of the events line up, “fringe” presentations, creative pop-ups, awards/networking gala, music concert, and action/creative planning sessions as part of the events.
This will be achieved by engaging in ongoing contact with the black community supported by a permanent online platform providing a digital safe space for networking, workshops, forums, and project development.Josephine RorobiProudly BlacknScottishUnited KingdomGlasgowhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/glasgowtag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2032902022-08-16T00:00:00Z2022-08-18T01:45:36ZChicago, IL – South/West Side Community Jams Frederick and Anna Douglass Park was recently renamed from Stephen A Douglas Park. The petition and eventual successful name change was due to the efforts of a group of teens from Austin. The name change was only the beginning in rectifying the harm done in honoring a man who kept people in bondage slavery with a plot of land in a Black neighborhood.
We want to honor our young people’s efforts and continue the healing process by establishing another tradition of cultural celebration in Douglass Park: monthly community dance & music jams, also known as cyphers. The cypher, or improvisation circle, is a tradition that has roots in a great many BIPOC-based artistic disciplines. We hope this will help fill our community’s need for further place-based connection to history, and build solidarity across racial and ethnic divides.
The backbone of these community jams is the multidisciplinary collaboration between tap dancers and jazz musicians. However, the jams will not simply be limited to these two disciplines. From trading fours to the roda to the ring shout, a version of the cypher is fundamental to any African Diaspora-based dance or music discipline, and many Indigenous dance and music traditions as well. However, in tap dance the cypher’s original purpose was as a mechanism of nonviolent conflict resolution between young dancers, and that is the reason for our emphasis on tap as one of the primary artistic disciplines involved in this event series.

This is out of our scope of services, but we know that there are so many families in our community who rely on this program for school supplies and backpacks. We provide 600 backpacks filled with supplies for kids in Richland County, ND and Wilkin County, MN. This covers children from 9 school districts.
Three Rivers Crisis Center is a small non-profit. The funding Three Rivers Crisis Center receives from state and federal grants are specifically to be used for domestic violence, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse. Because of these funding restrictions, the school supply program can only be funded by private grants and donations. This has turned in to such a large project that we are hoping to eventually turn it in to it's own non-profit entity so it can continue to grow.

Pollinators keep these spaces buzzing, literally and figuratively. However, not every area in Pittsburgh has the resources to create a green space or pollinator garden.
Based on similar and effective programs around the globe, Humane Action Pittsburgh’s HAP Hive aims to combat the ever-declining bee population through a three pronged approach:
1.) Work with the City of Pittsburgh to eliminate the use of chemical pesticides
2.) Replace ornamental flowers with native plants where possible
3.) Install “bee hotels” to encourage settlement and increase the bee population throughout Western PA where natural habitats have been destroyed.
HAP Hive was created out of concern for bees and other pollinator species. Their numbers have continued to decline dramatically the past few years. They play a vital role in our ecosystem by helping plants survive and prosper. This directly impacts our food systems as plants produce one-third of our food supply, one-half of the world’s oils and fibers, and other raw materials.
Humane Action Pittsburgh (HAP) plans to partner with Swissvale, a borough in Allegheny County, to build a green space in a vacant lot. Part of that green space, a pollinator garden, will include native plants and food sources for pollinators, a food forest–which is the planting of edible plants to copy ecosystems and patterns found in nature–a clover lawn and outdoor lighting.
The space would offer educational opportunities to host classes or community events. After this green space is installed in Swissvale, HAP plans to expand this initiative throughout Allegheny County.Natalie Ahwesh, Executive Director, HAPHAP HiveUnited StatesPittsburgh, PAhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/pittsburghtag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2033112022-08-15T00:00:00Z2022-08-31T01:33:05ZNewmarket – Backpacks for youth in Newmarket We are working on 4th annual Back to school drive that provides over 300 new backpacks each September with new school supplies. These are much needed this year due to numerous requests from region's shelters and youth in the community. Covid-19 has put a lot of financial strains on families declining mental health and increased stress. Youth and children need to go back to school in September with dignity, confidence and respect carrying new backpacks and school supplies. We have over 150 families requests with inability to purchase these items this summer. Many children and youth that are homeless or at risk cannot afford to get new items. Every summer we run fundraisers to collect donations and buy new school backpacks and quality school supplies. This summer fundraisers have been a challenge due to increase in covid-19 cases and overall community donations have reduced due to financial hardships everyone is facing. We are in urgent needs of funds to carry on this project in the next 3 weeks. It will be much appreciated if this request is considered and funds are granted.

We chose this project for its work with young athletes in our community. The grant will help them purchase safety gear such as helmets as well as support fees and other necessary expenditures.
In the coaches own words, "East Side Wrestling Club was started as a non-profit here in MN in 2011. We focus on offering a high-quality wrestling experience to local kids (focused on St Paul, Minneapolis, and the surrounding suburbs) regardless of financial ability to participate. Our fees are typically about 10-20% of a typical club, and we waive/reduce fees for anyone who requests. This past season had about 40% of our families paying dues. We are 100% volunteer-run, so 100% of our proceeds go back to supporting our community.
Over this past year we have helped fund some local wrestlers to attend national tournaments, we have funded numerous USA Wrestling memberships & tournament entry fees, and we have financially partnered with St Paul Johnson High School for a full upgrade of their wrestling room space."Matt VinezShoes & safety gearhttp://www.eswc.weebly.comUnited StatesSt. Paul, MNhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/stpaultag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2024382022-08-10T00:00:00Z2022-08-11T13:16:44ZAnn Arbor, MI – Fourth Hand Bicycle ProjectFourth Hand Bicycle Project is a mobile bicycle repair unit providing education and hands on bike mechanics training to BIPOC folks in Detroit MI. The project looked at the possibilities of repurposing "scrap" material and pointing out the mass amounts of wood that end up in landfills from construction sites. It promotes a way to use materials that have a high carbon footprint in their production in a sustainable manner. I designed and built two chairs, a coffee table, and a light fixture using three types of scrap wood. The project was extremely rewarding and I received positive feedback from neighbors, volunteers at the Tool Library, and members of the community. The project only was only on display for one month, and I would have loved the opportunity to design something more permanent. I would enjoy to work on a project that would convey the same message as the installation, and the opportunity to expand the project over time. I am proposing a project located in the University Heights District or the Rails to Trails bike path, that would allow me to design and construct benches or outdoor furniture from reused or upcycled materials. We are dedicated to caring for and improving the multi-use trail system at Hashawha Environmental Center and Union Mills while also growing the off-road cycling community that uses these trails. Through trail-work days and user education we advocate for all trail users, working with the county parks department and the land manager at Hashawha to make the trails safer, and funnier to use whether users are on foot, horseback or bicycles. By leading group rides throughout the year we aim to build a community of off-road cyclists and educate riders and other trails users about trail etiquette and shared trail use. This Spring we are also hoping to expand our programming to include basic bicycle maintenance workshops and schedule a one-day basic mountain bike skills workshop for people new to mountain biking, educating riders on basic technique and skill building to improve rider safety and confidence.

This transmedia exhibit gives voice to the untold stories of those sent to the New York Training School for Girls (1904-1975) throughout the 20th century. Located at Ann Street Gallery, the Incorrigibles exhibit is open until Sept. 9 with free public programs throughout the summer.
Cynthia Boykin, a Newburgh native who was sent to the Training School in the 1970s, instigated bringing the exhibition and public programs to Newburgh. When asked about the significance of this exhibition in her home city, she said, “It’s been 50 years since my time at the Training School. This is an awakening for me, an opportunity to go back and reach the little girl I once was. My story is one of many, so it is essential that our stories are told. Our voices need to be heard.”
Wand-making: the craft of power reclamation, is a program initiated by the Incorrigibles project and artist Alison Cornyn. The program is an invitation to join an art-making space, a self-organized community project hearkening back to the sewing bee. It values interconnected creativity and promotes individual and collective responses to the feminist political and social struggles of today.
Each workshop has an energy of its own. In the process, people create and share techniques, as well as stories. A wide range of materials are provided (including those from the grounds of the Training School), and participants are invited to experiment and innovate. The workshop is introduced but not formally "led". Materials, time, and space are all provided to move beyond thinking and to make. We've encountered some skepticism about the simplicity and "craftiness" of the wand-making workshops. Still, each time participants have found it to be incredibly rewarding, moving, and thought-provoking, and that is why we continue to do it.Alison Cornyn Incorrigibles’ Workshop: Wand Making & Story Sharehttps://annstreetgallery.org/IncorrigiblesUnited StatesNewburgh, NYhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/newburghtag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2027822022-08-05T00:00:00Z2022-08-05T16:33:59ZWatertown, SD – New Touchpads The swim team needs new touchpads at the ends of the pool that are used for timing. Incorporated as a nonprofit organization in May 2022, Sock & Buskin is working to build a community of thespians, artists, and lovers of theatre that is welcoming, inclusive, and vibrant, and which contributes positively to the community.
We plan to stage live theatrical performances open to the public and eventually develop workshops, classes, camps, job shadowing, mentorships, and other educational opportunities for children and adults. Inclusiveness is a core tenet of our philosophy: we invite people with an interest in any aspect of theatre—performance, production, or operations—to take part in our shows and activities, and we will strive to find a place for everyone, regardless of experience level. We believe the theatrical stage can be an exciting crucible for reciprocal learning and inspiration: those who are new can learn from those with experience, but they can also bring fresh perspectives and ideas, and people at all experience levels can discover new talents or interests.
We are keen to collaborate with other organizations to broaden our reach. Our first production, for example, was June 24-25 as part of the Central PA Theatre and Dance Fest, and we participated in that festival’s Starlight Revue variety show. We will also seek to tap into the tremendous talent within our community by staging works by local playwrights: our first production was written by area playwright David Williams, and our next productions, planned for October and December at Titan Hollow in Bellefonte, will be two new murder mysteries written by members of our group.
Through our inclusive, collaborative, community-driven approach, Sock & Buskin seeks to entertain, inspire, and foster a love of the theatrical arts in Centre County. Nature walks are an amazing way for children to get to know their own community from a different lens.
As a nature based educator and former Mill Valley educator, I am planning a series of guided nature walks and walking field trips for students of Coleman School in San Rafael and Lynwood School in Novato. The children will explore their own backyard flora/fauna and how the first people of Marin used these resources. We will go on nature scavenger hunts, create nature journals and take part in a service project for habitat restoration.
These mini field trips will be coordinated with the teachers so that they dovetail with their science and social studies curriculum.

Now in its fourth year, this access-centered craft fair will feature free live events, workshops, virtual "tables", and a virtual sensory room. This event is open to ALL! Allies are welcomed and encouraged to attend!
This fair is for people to display their work, and build community, in a space that pushes back against popular narratives of illness and disability being inspirational or sad. The fair is free to attend, with free crafting and learning opportunities, as well as plenty of low cost zines and art to buy.
Accessibility is important to us, this includes keeping prices reasonable so everyone can enjoy the fest and bring something home with them. The fair will be trans inclusive and run by majority queer and trans, sick and disabled folks. We aim to make this an annual event held to directly support the work of sick and disabled creatives and as a source of education and understanding for those who are less familiar with our community. We work towards having an open, safe, accessible space for all.
Our project is rooted in revolutionary love and need for community care, representation, and art. As sick and disabled queer and trans people, art is how we have explored our lives in a society that tells us we are inferior, especially as we go into the third year of a global pandemic that disproportionately impacts the sick and disabled community. Many of us have been excluded from in-person craft fairs due to inaccessibility and inadequate COVID-19 safety measures. Our experiences are unique but not isolated, and our ability to find connections through art is what motivates us to pursue projects like this zine and craft fair.
**What our grantee is saying:** “Receiving these funds is a huge step in furthering the mission of the SAD Fair - to bring together sick, disabled, neurodivergent, and mentally ill artists and creators from all around the world to celebrate each other. This grant will help us create a better, more accessible event, where we can harbor and create community, as well as educate and advocate for ourselves and the greater disabled community.”

Although this post-lockdown summer, free face-to-face activities are available to many, there is little to no free at-home provision for parents/ carers. This has been flagged by our partner The Positivitree as a problem for SEND families, whose health, mental and emotional needs may prevent them from participating in larger groups.
We'd like to include them in summer fun in a joyous way. We've asked parents at the Positivitree if they'd benefit from a box, and 30 children signed up in one day. Families have chosen the box they want from topics like the Caribbean, FairyTroll World, Engineering Around the World, Japan and the Ancient World to suit their child's interests.
Our materials provide over 10 hours of activities, from cooking to crafting, games to physical fun and are designed by student experts. They have been reviewed by SEND families and experts on the Wirral: Poppy Cain, SEND Youth Engagement Officer for Wirral Council said: "I think the boxes are amazing and such a clever way of getting children, young people and their families to come together. The boxes are so fun, and the themes are so creative, interactive and allow children and young people to use their imagination whilst learning about different cultures or imaginative worlds. The children and young people I work with say the boxes are so much fun and gives them a chance to spend time with their parent/carers. Whilst supporting some of our most vulnerable and low-income families in the community with the opportunity to get onboard and have a great time with an unplugged box. "

“Climate change is happening,” says Akil, “and it's really scary. There are many young people who are anxious about it and this is not great for mental health, nor does it spur any positive action to solving the problem.”
“I want to install two benches in my community of Little Italy,” he explains, “where people can come together and have conversations about climate change and think about solutions together. The cool part about these benches is that they are also inconspicuous worm farms – a real solution towards a sustainable future. These worm farms will be used by neighbours to compost their kitchen scraps – and there won't be any bugs or smells whatsoever!”
“I want to help people validate their climate feelings and get their creative juices flowing by showing them an example of an urban solution to our food waste problem. I will manage both benches,” he adds, “and redistribute the compost back to the soil by feeding neighbourhood trees.”
Akil is a self-described climate warrior and compost hero, and the founder of local social enterprise [The Box of Life] (https://www.theboxoflife.com). “I want to make vermicomposting mainstream,” he says, “and show people that earthworms make great pets inside homes. I truly did not understand how someone could be in front of a food store and have to beg for food. I gave her $5.00 and the lady cried when she received it, so touched that a child wanted to help her when so many had passed her by. I knew I wanted to make a difference. I created Z Feeds Angel Food Project when I was 9 years old. I make “Go-Go Bags” which are gallon bags filled with food, drink, toiletries and lots of love that I distribute to the homeless living in the women and children’s shelter. One of the most important items are the words of encouragement because I want everyone to always hope and believe that life will get better. My family also keeps extra bags in the car to give to homeless people we see on the street. I also distribute “Go-Go Bags” to homeless residents currently allowed to live in a hotel near my church. I continued to make bags as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the nation to a standstill. I make sure everyone observes protocol during COVID-19. I recruit other youth by inviting them to be a part of this wonderful project and discuss information on how they can also give back. My dance team does quarterly community service projects so we will invite them to be a part, making donations and packing bags, along with some youth from my church and my school, all of who do community service projects. She followed through; her home on Grapevine Road in East Gloucester is absolutely brimming with sculptures and found-object assemblages.
I first began recording my grandmother June’s stories as an act of personal curiosity. But I quickly realized that while she is a grandmother to me, to others she is a teacher, a mentor, an inspiration. In the last year we made a podcast episode; had an exhibition at Endicott College; and were even profiled in the Boston Globe. June passed away a few weeks ago at 93-years-old.
June Southworth was a life-long Cape Ann artist, avid collector, and local art educator in the Gloucester and Beverly school systems for 24 years. She was also the president of The Amazing Women’s Club, a special network of her own creation. I grew up minutes away from June’s house but I didn’t step foot inside until my early twenties. Since crossing that threshold, it’s been in a cyclical process of purging, clearing and re-clearing pathways, and ensuring that she could remain safely in the home studio she loved so much.
That home was just sold, and I have limited time to sort through a space filled with artworks, writings, collections of crosses, bottles, driftwood, and relics of decades past. June lived in a shrine to history, and I see documenting her space and objects is a project of cultural preservation.
I am applying for the Awesome Foundation grant to resource the recording and digitization of this significant slice of local history before it’s inaccessible. Specifically, I will make high fidelity 3D captures of her home for an immersive web documentary, photograph her artworks, and scan the notes, newspaper clippings, and analogue photographs that offer a unique glimpse into the life and mind of a beloved local artist.

Squid. The largest squid is the size of a school bus & the smallest is the size of your pinky fingernail. Some glow in the dark & others secrete glue from their skin. They change color to communicate with each other, and their blood is blue. Does the average Boston resident realize how awesome squid are? Not enough of them! Since 2018, the squid facts hotline has served up squid facts to 40,000+ people. It’s time to try something new! Electrical boxes are urban canvases lining our city’s sidewalks (Fig 3). In my work as the VP of the Fishtown Neighbors Association, I have managed public art projects, including collaborations with artists and galleries to convert electrical boxes into public art galleries. In this project, we will transform an electrical box into a standing invitation to learn more about squid in Allston. Our artist will design an eye-catching squid mural that teaches us something about squid, with the invitation to text the squid facts hotline for more. I think it would be especially useful to have at the beach, where sunscreen needs to be applied to the whole body & it’s easy to leave empty patches, and where swimming will wash off the sunscreen over time, and people are unable to check how much sunscreen they have on them after getting out of the water.
This is not a new idea, but that’s a good thing. The tech already exists and this is an achievable project. There have been ad campaigns that use these kinds of cameras, and YouTube science channels that have explained this in detail:

This project is worth doing because we will make a photo booth that Melbournians directly use themselves at beaches, Moomba Festival, music festivals, etc.
When the photobooth is not being used at an event, David would like to set up the camera at the Royal Children’s Hospital where he works, so that kids and parents visiting the hospital can use it. The hospital already provides sunscreen. A photo booth would be a fun way to show kids why wearing sunscreen is important.Grace TangUV PhotoboothAustraliaMelbournehttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/melbournetag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2025942022-07-26T00:00:00Z2022-07-27T18:31:38ZPortland, OR – Petals and Thorns: A Spoken Word JourneyPetals and Thorns: A Spoken Word Journey is a short film documentary that will follow the experience of nine (9) youth Black high school aged age in a 1-week intensive writing and spoken word workshop. The workshop will culminate in a "open mic" style event featuring performance of the workshop's participants.
Although I have 25 years of experience working with youth and have created, coordinated and facilitated an award-winning youth program previously, this is my first time creating a short film.
I am excited to continue my work with youth, especially providing them a space and platform to center, develop and elevate their voice in this way, during what is already a typically challenging period of a teen's life, but much more so, in light of the last 2.5 years and everything that has happened in their lives and our world since this time.
I want to not only give them space and permission to express themselves, but to validate and value their feelings and perspectives. The workshop is valuable on its own, but it must be witnessed and experienced by more than just those in the room. It must be made into a short film and I hope the Awesome Foundation will help me to do that.La Toya A. It made me think about recycling second hand clothes to create new designs. So I began to investigate what it would take to kick start this kind of project. After spending some time on my research I think I have the answer.
My main goal is to create a sustainable production chain that brings new, cool and fashionable clothing to children, because everyone deserves to feel good in their clothes. I would like to produce these clothes on a monthly or weekly schedule and distribute them to several institutions who work with kids in need.Mikael"Morph" Clothes Recycle Project for OrphansArmeniaYerevanhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/yerevantag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2004162022-07-25T00:00:00Z2022-07-25T20:09:51ZNew York City, NY – Her Village Inc. Essential Items BankWe are pleased to award our July 2022 grant to Her Village, Inc., a Bronx-based organization providing support to mothers through their diaper bank and period supplies. Since 2020, they have distributed over 330,000 diapers and over 230,000 period supplies to over 2,000 families in NYC.
**Our grant will help fund their new initiative: community dinners for the mothers they serve, giving them a safe and supportive space to take a break, slow down, and be nourished both practically and emotionally**.
Founder Chantal Alison-Konteh writes: _"During these dinners, we build community by gathering together. We build worth and dignity by preparing a beautiful and nourishing dinner letting moms know they're worth the time and effort. We build healthy moms as each time is edifying and includes an educational component for moms to grow in the way we care and love ourselves. Healthy communities start at home and we believe they start with moms."_

Witch Hazel is a queer magical action comedy romance romance comic with world ending stakes!
The story is set in a world where magic is commonplace and spellcasters are treated like freelancers that can be hired for odd jobs. Witchcraft is a job app created to help with your mystical needs, whether it’s unsummoning a spectral squid that is clogging your sink, turning you into a ghost to battle your poltergeist or simply turning your goldfish a different colour; there’s a spell for that and a witch on standby to cast it. Magic however can have unintended consequences. Too much spellcasting will thin the immaterial walls separating our world and the realm of magic called the Abstract. When thinned too much, interdimensional beings can bleed into ours. Luckily, most witches cannot cast the amount of magic needed for that to happen… Hazel however, is not most witches.
In the first issue we meet Hazel, whose life has come to a halt after dropping out of magic school... That is until she awakens from a sloppy night out to find she has accepted every offer on Witchcraft, a freelance job app for witches. However, she has also set a date with her crush Alice all on the same day! Hazel must then finish her tasks in time for a night of awkward romance all while being pursued by inter-dimensional, magic-hungry demons that she inadvertently summoned! The issue ends with Hazels life narrowly being saved by her date Alice, who is revealed to also be a Witch.
The first issue has been completed and met with great reviews and has been the subject of two interviews:

Witch Hazel is intended to be an ongoing comic with the first issue completed in March. This series of workshops would focus on decorative mending and creative uses for upcycled materials, a creative and useful practice that I have taught before in my monthly sustainability fashion art series. These classes would be open to students ages 3 and up and can facilitate 30 students each. The workshops cover topics of sustainability and basic sewing skills to encourage participants to mend, customize, and extend the lives of their most precious garments. In the past the decorative mending workshops have included patch making, quilting, painting, and weaving, salvaging, and restoring worn clothing. Clothes are the most accessible form of expression, for artists and non-creatives alike, by tapping into this plentiful resource participants are encouraged to express their own personal styles and the way they express themselves outwardly to the world. Students are encouraged to mend, create, or personalize garments using the techniques learned during the workshops with each student ending the class with an updated garment of their own. These skills can be used beyond the classroom for day to day use and general creative expression. While crafting their individual pieces, participants would learn about the topics of manufacturing, the purpose of clothing as a personal, social, and political construct, and the importance of sustainability in our daily lives. Materials would be fully provided by me with most materials being upcycled fabrics, paint, beads, clothing, and more. Each workshop culminates in a mini photo shoot showcasing the participants in their updated clothing.
I am currently teaching these workshops via Vizcaya in Younison, a month long event this June. I would like to continue these workshops throughout the summer at various locations with grant funding.Pangea Kali VirgaSustainability Sewing Workshopshttps://www.pangeakalivirga.com/workshopsUnited StatesMiami, FLhttps://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/miamitag:www.awesomefoundation.org,2005:Project/2010412022-07-20T00:00:00Z2022-07-20T16:59:20ZWatertown, SD – Kites, Flights, & Bites EventFor the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening of the Watertown Regional Airport, we are planning a two day event. After a extremely successful senior event and consultation with Aboriginal members in the junior division, a decision was made to host a separate round that highlights the continued work in closing the gap and reconciliation across all months of the year and not just around significant events such as NAIDOC week.
We have collaborated with members of the community who mentor young Aboriginal youth and work in Cultural spaces to ensure this day will be around educating, celebrating and coming together with the focus on Culture and rugby leagues history as the forefront.
We will be allocating the funds across three areas
1) Every junior central Charlestown player will be wearing the Indigenous jersey designed by the Aboriginal members of the committee which will be theirs to keep as a inaugural jersey. A further amount of jerseys will be gifted to members in Community who are contributing their Cultural knowledge. All other outside orders will be asked to pay per normal.
2) Payment will be made appropriately to acknowledge the Cultural competency of Aboriginal Lore by paying for a Welcome to Country ($600) and a smoking ceremony ($200) to allow cleansing, healing and bringing together the Community. Dances will be held as part of this which will include children of the club and visiting club to learn traditional dancing
3) Additional décor that clearly represents that the day is focused to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
This opportunity for financial allocations will mean we are able as a committee, host and make this a expectation for all junior Hunter and Lake Mac clubs to follow.

Founded in 2015 under the directorship of Maestro Arturo Magaña, EFC’s mission is to promote the pride of identifying as LGBTQ+ Latinx through the art of Mexican folklórico dance. EFC also seeks to preserve our customs and traditions through cultural and educational projects as well as staged performances. We create a unique folklorico group where the LGBTQ+ Community has the creative platform to express and validate our sexual and cultural identity.
This year, EFC is performing at several Pride celebrations throughout the Bay Area. EFC also performs at schools, usually followed by discussions with students and Arturo Magaña sometimes speaks on panels about his role as the founder of EFC. Since live events have started happening again, EFC has been performing several times a month. We perform throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and have traveled around California and to Seattle as well.
There are two distinct groups of people who benefit from this project: The dancers themselves and the audience. The dancers benefit by becoming part of a tight knit community of people who care about the same things: art and equality. The audience benefits by seeing something they’ve never experienced before. Since EFC is the first LGBTQ+ folklorico group, most people have never seen men in folklorico dresses or women in charro suits. In EFC, dancers are referred to as “boots” and “skirts.” The “boots” wear traditional male costumes and the “skirts” wear traditional female costumes. Any dancer, of any gender, can be either a “boot” or a “skirt” and some dancers switch between roles in different dances.
Over the next year we will be learning new material from different states of Mexico. Each state has its own unique style of dance, its own costumes and its own music. We will be adding the states of Hidalgo, Guerrero and Michoacan Tierra Caliente. Each state will be taught by a guest Maestro.
