"Often, bird guides rely heavily on stiff scientific drawings, but this guide will feature illustrations that are more unique and lively, giving each bird a distinct personality, even while making sure they are relatively true to life." By observing bird behavior directly, the artist will create a contemporary interpretation in the age old tradition of birding and naturalist studies. Since 2006, Villarte Chicago’s main event, the Little Village Arts Festival, has been a beacon of pride on Chicago’s Southwest Side. Every November, Villarte Chicago collaborates with local Artists, organizations, businesses and volunteers to create a weekend art-walk composed of pop-up galleries that celebrates the talent and culture of the community. This entire effort is guided by volunteers. The festival is a critical component for local artists, youth and families to show artwork and discuss the important art practices and opportunities available both in and outside the community. We collaborate with local business owners to transform their storefronts into pop-up galleries and/or commission local artists to create a Day of the Dead altar in their window to create an art walk along 26th Street. There are also workshops taught by local artists. Community members participate in the Little Village Arts Festival by visiting the various pop-up galleries and installations as well as taking part in workshops taught by local artists. Despite comprising a significant portion of the population, Muslims face barriers in finding products that authentically reflect their culture. With over 3 million Muslims in the U.S., the need for culturally relevant entertainment is evident. In Pittsburgh, there are 11 mosques and about 3,000 Muslims. We come from a variety of backgrounds such as South Asian, Arab, African-American, African, Southeast Asian, and Caucasian. Still, we are a minority and face many barriers, including discrimination. Through our innovative games, we strive to bridge cultural divides while fostering fun and camaraderie. Our first game, currently in development, is A Muslim Party Game. It is modeled after a tried-and-true party game that has many successful versions. Most people want to know their Muslim neighbor. Most Muslims want a seat at the table with products that they can see themselves in. In my search for low-glycemic index foods, I discovered sourdough fermentation. Extended fermentation process significantly reduces gluten & starch content, making it a safe for those with specific gluten sensitivities and hypoglycemia. Recognizing the time-intensive nature of maintaining a strong starter and fermenting bread for 30+ hours, I realized that most people don’t have the resources (time, skill, equipment) to access this essential nutritional staple: bread. So I set myself on a mission to make sourdough bread accessible locally. Over the past 7 months I’ve focused on perfecting starter maintenance, refining baking techniques, and testing out recipes tailored to our climate. As I shared fermented bread, cookies, scones, crackers, with friends and community, I started getting requests for orders, prompting me to pursue a cottage industry license and ways to expand my reach in the FMWF-Dilworth community. Named after the Palestinian national flower: the poppy, Hannoun Sourdough symbolizes resilience through connection to our ancestral practices. My 130-year old starter named Bisan, is a namesake honoring the 25-year-old Palestinian journalist, symbolizing hope and determination amid adversity. Sourdough fermentation echoes all of our ancestors’ traditional methods of baking bread before advent of the commercialized active yeast. Hannoun not only brings joy to my customers and community through health-conscious baked goods becoming accessible, it also serves as a pathway to my own healing and resilience. In my heart of hearts, I truly believe that this provides novel insight into the ontology of the universe, the nature of spacetime, and the role of consciousness in the universe. This is an avenue that, as best I can tell, is not being explored anywhere else. I've been invited to present my findings at the Minkowski Institute's 7th International Conference on the Nature and Ontology of Spacetime! A few months back I submitted an abstract to the conference organizers. They sent it off to their scientific committee, and I got word back that my abstract was accepted and that I'm invited to present at this conference! This is a wonderful opportunity to present what I've been working on to an audience familiar with the questions I'm seeking to answer, familiar with the prerequisite ideas that I'm building on, and an audience that is well positioned to propagate this theory into the contemporary conversation, and to put my conclusions to work in fields where they could be of real use. I'm aware that there is a reasonable concern that when I'm proposing a theory that has to do with the underpinnings of reality and the nature of spacetime, that I might be a crackpot, out of it, etc., or a probably more likely concern that I'm making associations between things because I've got an incomplete picture, and those associations aren't actually there. The process of learning about theater and rehearsing for live shows promotes teamwork, cooperation, a sense of belonging, work ethic, memory, leadership, social skills, and, perhaps most importantly, fun! We want to introduce accessible, inclusive, and meaningful theatrical performances to individuals with disabilities residing in the Downriver area of Southeast Michigan. By staging this work, I hope to spark meaningful conversations about our moral identities as Australians, inspire other theatres to embrace diverse voices entirely and without consequence, and show other underrepresented artists that they can pave the path to their artistic careers. We are a team of community-focused artists who are First Nations, disabled, LGBTQIA+, people of colour, women, and from low socio-economic backgrounds. We will empower the Ukrainian women by hosting an event in our community space where we will hold this wellbeing day were we will provide: nutritional food, make-up pampering bags, childcare provision, wellbeing hand massages for 13 women. The space will be welcoming and atmospheric, benefitting from room decorations, relaxing music, positive feelings and comfortable, safe settings. I was grateful to receive the 'Highly Commended' Employee of the Year 2023 award from Knowsley Business Chamber that highlighted the impact our work has had to people in need and I am proud of the resilience and engagement that the community has worked hard on together to achieve so much in such a short space of time, this funding would help to continue this work. In our six-month pilot project, 40 primary school students from Toronto exchanged letters, photos, artwork, and even recipes with their pen pals from Mary's Harbour and Cape Saint George, two remote communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. Through these exchanges, the children learnt about traditions, heritage, the importance of family, and the land we all share. They also had the opportunity to make traditional raisin bun cookies, guided by a southern Inuit NunatuKavut elder, and listened to stories from the past during a virtual event. These interactions not only built friendships but also enhanced the children’s capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect—directly aligning with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 63. The children's eagerness to participate in the REACH Pen Pal Program was truly remarkable. Some schools have them, but to our knowledge, they are not common items in public places in the U.S. We are hopeful that by getting the necessary licenses and placing a machine in a heavily trafficked area, we could give local authors more visibility and also sell their books. I began Driving For Inclusivity in 2023. I developed a comprehensive weekly golf skills training curriculum for disabled patrons that included swing drills and putting practice. I also collected hundreds of golf clubs, tees, and bags to provide neurodiverse young people with opportunities to participate and build a hobby to enjoy. I established a neurodiverse golf team at my high school, Miami Palmetto Senior, offering weekly skills training and mentorship support to empower these new athletes toward competition. From regional to state competition, we brought home some winning medals. Their sheer joy of these neurodiverse young people was palpable. This taught me that anything is possible when we are willing to contribute and level the playing field. . I am now embarking on bringing Driving For Inclusivity outside of my school site and into the community to give disabled children and young adults, recently out of school with limited social networks, an opportunity to build new skills through golf training, take home equipment, and most importantly participate in competition and socialization. With the Awesome Foundation Miami's support, I will begin a series of golf skills training days in the Fall on Saturdays culminating in a tournament. Australia has a survival rate of approx 8% of out of hospital cardiac arrest and it is easily achievable to significantly increase the survivability rate with the use of a community defibrillator. Currently we have 3 Defibs available 24/7 in Catherine Hill Bay(CHB) but we require 2 more Defib’s to give total coverage of both new CHB and original CHB. In conjunction with the installation and availability of these Defib’s a free community CPR course has been held and a refresher CPR course is scheduled for September 2024. The CoC works in collaboration with local and regional partners on a plan and homeless response system that strives to make homeless rare, brief, and one-time. The AET was formed by the CoC since inequities exist in our system and to end homelessness and provide a quality system we must focus on building an equitable system. The CoC also realized that without a special focus on advancing equity, we did not have the focus needed to impact change. The AET initiative was designed to help identify goals and measurable action steps that increase equity in our homeless response system. Since the CoC feels strongly that persons with lived experience of homelessness (PLE) need to be center to system planning and improvements, we have centered work on LE Advisory Boards. From the fall of 2021 to the spring of 2022, the CoC hosted five focus group for PLE who were Indigenous or persons of color. Two BIPOC LE representatives served on a leadership team with the CoC Coordinator, CoC Chair, & AET Chair, reviewing feedback on needs, concerns, and ideas for system improvement. Six goals were formed from this process. These were presented to the CoC and newly formed LE Advisory groups in September of 2022. Unfortunately, progress stalled when our chair left. A new chair began in February 2023 but he has only had time to host 4 meetings since then. While the CoC integrated some of the goals identified by the LE Advisory, work was again stalled until this week when a new chair began and is working on reinvigorating the work. The LE Advisory groups will meet monthly and start work on identifying action step. Additionally, the new chair was hired to help support and empower LE members to not just set goals, but collaboratively work with the CoC to achieve them.
