Long Island Girl Talk

Long Island Girl Talk (LIGT) builds self-esteem, leadership, independence, and career skills in adolescent girls ages 12-18 in the Freeport, Hempstead, Roosevelt, and Uniondale Long Island School Districts by training them to create their own media. Participants learn how to research, write, film, edit, cast, direct and star in their own public access television show on the Cablevision and Verizon networks about issues relevant to women and girls in their communities. By learning to create their own broadcast material, the girls embrace a strategy for independence which allows them to promote positive representations of themselves in the media. In addition, they explore careers in the media field and learn technical skills nontraditional for women.
